The final episode of Kuma's flashback is here. Another heart-wrenching episode, but it is just another peak episode. It's so nice for Kuma to see his daughter able to sail freely in the seas as a pirate while searching for him. Although sadly, they could not meet, it's nice that Kuma was reassured that his daughter is strong and safe for now. The pre-time skip was seen through Kuma's perspectives. Luffy made a name for himself by defeating Arlong and earned a 30 million bounty. He then defeated a Warlord Crocodile, raising his bounty to 100 million. He then declared war on the World Government at Enies Lobby and then, along with the Straw Hats, defeated CP9, earning him a 300 million bounty. At Thriller Bark, the Straw Hats once again defeated Moria, but Kuma was sent to kill Luffy. The Straw Hats would rather die than hand Luffy to Kuma. Zoro offered his life in exchange, so Kuma offered Zoro to endure all of Luffy's pain. Zoro voluntarily absorbed the bubble of pain, nearly killing himself. Kuma was deeply moved and impressed by Dragon's son to be able to find such a great group of friends. After leaving Thriller Bark, Kuma received a call from Sengoku that they had captured Ace and were declaring war against the Whitebeard Pirates.

At Saboady, Luffy attacked a celestial dragon, an act of treason. Kuma, who suspected Luffy might be the legendary figure Nika due to his rubber powers, grew even more certain of the boy’s potential. Realising the Straw Hats weren’t ready for the New World, he saved them from Kizaru by scattering them across the world, placing his full trust in their future to save the world.

On the day Kuma was set to lose all traces of his personality, he travelled to Egghead and used his abilities to create a replica of his life’s memories, encapsulating them in an orange paw-shaped bubble that Bonney would later touch and absorb. Vegapunk said he could make another copy of it and view Kuma's life. Later, Kuma told Vegapunk he didn’t care about losing his personality, as he had achieved his goal in curing Bonney and put his trust in Dragon's son, Luffy, to overthrow the World Government. This part was already revealed as Kuma asked Vegapunk to program him to defend the Straw Hats' home, the Thousand Sunny, until one of the crew members returned. In the next emotional scene, Kuma's life is shown through this amazing animation and artwork, so emotional that it can make anyone cry. In the next heartbreaking moment, Kuma asked Vegapunk to wish Bonney a happy 10th birthday. Vegapunk told Kuma he was a hero before pulling the switch to erase his personality. Back to the present, Bonney is seen crying after she absorbed the memory bubble and found out the truth. This is absolute cinema.

is there a chance Vegapunk installed that brain circuit anyway? I feel a line like that shouldn't need to be added unless they want to leave open the possibility of "restoring" Kuma's free will very much later on

Better than a regular (for this series at least) drawn-out flashback of recycled footage and animation but geeze, there was really no need for 95% of this episode to harp on all of the emotional plot points the audience just spent an entire month getting inundated with. It felt like such a throwaway episode.

The version of this episode style during the Kaido fight felt much better-done than this, primarily because the Kaido artsy flashback ep summarized an entire arc of info in an avant-garde way. But seeing that style reused to rehash just a handful of eps that we literally just saw beforehand came too close to feeling like the redundant way the worst of the drawn-out arcs of the past (esp Dressrosa and Wano) felt.

PERFECT EPISODE!!!! ABSOLUTE PEAK. CRIED SO HARD I STARTED SHAKING. I have read the manga, and I knew what to expect, but the way this was directed and crafted was so touching. Voice acting, music and beautiful animation really elevates the feels for this moment.

i thought Kumas back story was great but that pacing was horrible 8 episodes was excessive. Toei really needs to get their act together and fix their damn pacing issues and stop making Sanji look bad if I was Oda I would have already said something or if I could change studios

No, this episode is too much, it’s a goodbye, Kuma. It’s interesting how Kuma developed respect for Luffy, in part because he is Dragon’s son and in part because of his own actions, Luffy is a brave and free man. I think I never wondered why Kuma ended up helping them if they barely interacted, I think this is the answer.

This episode reminded me of why One Piece is truly one of the greatest pieces of fiction to ever exist. Kuma's backstory and life are truly tragic and he served as a warrior of liberation in his own right. The entire montage of Kuma reminiscing his entire life was one of the most tragic scenes I have ever seen. Beautiful.

It's really sad to see Kuma dead like that... This might be 2nd thing in One Piece moment that can make me almost cry for real. (1st is Zoro when taking Luffy pain by using Kuma power)
