This thread didn't disappoint. Got what I expecting to see in this thread. Full of baits and butthurts. We have some people generalizing why its so popular, while we have some people talking complete crap that doesn't make any sense. While we have some people copy pasting quotes that they see in other forums.

Op ask why snk is so big. But yet people are telling op why they don't like the series?? Some people here have poor reading comprehension skills.

Oh, and to the people saying because snk is full of noobs. Well, when the 2nd season comes out you can't come with the excuse that they are new to anime, since these noobs won't be noobs 3 years later.

Best thread ever!

My answer to op question. It became so big, because it brought freshness in the anime industry. The series is different from 90% of what's comming out every year.

Lol I've noticed that the majority of people responding to this thread were pretty much just bashing the series as well. I was like, how does this all relate to the OP's question? o_O

In any case, bashing SnK in threads like these seem to be the norm these days. I guess people just love to hate what's popular =P

I think the epic scenes in this anime reminds me of Gurren Laggan, i've loved alot Gurren Laggan because my kind of anime is the one with action, and i like stories where mankind is bellow the bottom but they are always fighting to reach a goal, in this case both SnK and Gurren shows that mankind in reality always want to survive. And i think those kind of anime fascinate me, for the simple fact that they relate the story with the real world. And here you have a representation of opression of a superior race towards humanity, i think that's what makes it awesome, you can see how much humanity is willing to become free.

Why this anime is popular:

Titans-I've never seen a plot with giants terrorizing humanity before and its pretty unique if you ask me.
3D Maneuver Gear-Pseudorealistic fighting gadget? Best idea ever.
Art-Have you seen those animations? Holy crap are they beautiful.
OST-OPs deserves special mention, but the BGMs are awesome too. My favorite is EMA.
Survey Corps- Nothing completes a show without a badass squadron of flying killers that we can all cheer for.
Cliffhangers-Although I binge watched this, I can't fathom the agony when trying to watch episodically every week.
Unexpected dead characters-These surprises come out of nowhere. Really adds to those feels.

This was the anime that got me into anime so I'm grateful for it. It still remains at the top of some of the best animes I've watched.

Man, the criticism SnK gets is so repetitive.

maybe it's big because a lot of people liked the show?

people can like or dislike the show (and all shows in general) all they want, it's fine whatever option they choose (for something we humans have variety in preferences and taste and thanks god for that)
it just happened that the adaptation was really well received for the majority of people who watched it

is not even a question of if the story, the characters, the setting (etc) are good or not, it just happened that people like it? (I don't know, sometimes you don't need a specific reason to like something, or the things you may like doesn't have to be "perfect" <--- PD: and if something is claimed to be "perfect" it's basically just an opinion of the person/s who say that, even if experts describe something as perfect -or not perfect- again it will be their opinion, it's up to people to decide if they want to share that opinion or not)

and for the person who claims that the majority of viewers are new-comer in anime...??? people who didn't know the show/anime in general got interested because of all the hype it got thanks to "normal" anime fans, so yeah, your assumption is quite wrong honestly, sure it has a lot of new anime fans but to the point to say that most of its fanbase are new into anime?....no

Not to mention, it's one of the very few anime that can attract both male and female audience without resorting to any typical sexual fan-service in the show. Last time it happened was Death Note i believe. For me personally, i love it because it's one of the rarest apocalyptic series that actually place a great emphasis on human's emotions particularly the way the suspense was built up, and how fear and despair is conveyed. Not every character is strong and not every character is weak. There's also that gender equality thing - males and females can be strong/weak. That added bit of realism in there for me. Its also not like any other anime/manga settings where all the main character have to do is beat the villain and the root of the problems will end or resolved. It doesn't work that way for Titans (at least not yet)and it concerns the whole survival of humanity, not just a certain sector of the area . Many of other apocalypse series that i've seen/read are load of bullshit because the characters are so fking overpowered (so courageous wow?! humanity so strong?! ) i couldn't really feel their sense of desperation or the settings are very questionable and they never delve into full details or indicates any revelation about why the apocalypse happened in the first place.

Screw my last posts in this thread. Stfu past me.

It's because it is a summer blockbuster-type action show that appeals to audiences outside of the typical anime niche.
