I don't find that it's often pulled off well, but Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion would probably be the first to come to mind as one that actually makes sense and is effective. A lot of the time they're just thrown in to be "cool" when the whole point is that they eventually do or feel something that shows they've developed said emotions.

I've never been a fan of emotionless girl, and usually I ignore these types of characters for the ones with more personality.

Well....Rei would have to be my least favorite among the three pilots when it comes to Neon Genesis Evangelion. I do like her as the purpose she served in the series, but at the same time, she was one of those characters that was hard to get a 'feel' for, but I understand she wasn't there to stick out as one to truly root for. I did however like her more in the manga.

Leaning towards indifferent when it comes to these types of characters.
Angel Beats!, Sakurasou, Steins;Gate, and Robotics;Notes all have those emotionless characters in which I was indifferent toward as well.

Just this once, I'll fulfill whatever your wish is.

I think emotionless characters can be a little more easily received if they actually experience emotion for even just a brief period.

Like Nagato Yuki...

Or Yami in TLR, since her girly side always seems to pop out due to a certain protagonist's constant accidental infringement.

The effect stalwart emotionless characters have on me depends on their role and the setting. Like Rei...with her background, it's understandable WHY she is emotionless for the most part, but she doesn't really draw my attention like Yuki or Yami.

Even Hei in DTB I think is easier to accept because he's a merciless killing machine. That's his role. He should be emotionless. He's great at putting on a face though.

But then again, there's Tabitha in ZnT...I saw WHY they made her the way they did, but it really doesn't do much for the plot and honestly, I feel a total sense of 'meh' whenever she gets screen time.

It varies for all of us, I guess.

I like the emotionless types.

Recently Tsukiko from The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat has taken the cake for me.

But then I think I like these characters because when you DO see emotion out of them, it feels like a special moment. It's probably the reason Kanade from Angel Beats is so popular as she is so damned moe when she shows any semblance of emotion that it's just insane.

They're...uhh...entertaining? It depends on how they're done, if it's presented in a comedic way it can be funny but if it's in a serious way usually it's pointless.

I like to think that most emotionless character archtypals actualy have emotions but are just unsure how to show it. At least the good ones do.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned HIM. HER. WHATEVER THAT WHITE SHIT IS:

Shiina Mashiro from Sakurasou is my personal favorite emotionless character, along with Yui from Darker Than Black.

Dont really like them tbh. Might have been cool back in the day but it's just cheap way of not bothering or even trying to give the character some sort of personality.

The Stoic

I'm okay with them as long as they're not being stoic for fanservice purposes.

I agree. It's just that when emotionless characters start showing emotions, it brings a really weird and satisfying feeling of happiness, know what I'm saying?

Oh yeah, I don't really like emotionless characters because they tend to be all the same.

Except Shiina Mashiro, from Sakurasou, because she's awesome and doesn't kill people without the blink of an eye like that other one :

She could have been a great character but they made her stupid.

In most cases the "emotionless" type characters actually tend to bug me. I guess I just find them difficult to connect with... I feel like they're almost a blank canvas in terms of personality, y'know? I know that obviously a lot of stoic characters DO have a deeper, hidden personality but... when they're portrayed as emotionless 90% of the time I almost find myself not caring about their personality and/or development when it finally starts to be revealed. Of course there's always exceptions, like when there's an actual reason for them to be stoic outside of "appearing cool".

I think they are decent if they execute it properly, if they failed to execute it then the character is boring.

I can relate to Todoroki but he shows completely no emotions. Even the recent laugh OVA the producers are mean to not make us see his cute laughing face :( I mean, we get to see some rather frowny characters laughing like Zoro, Vegeta & Hijikata
Sasuke is worst, emo af
Kuroko also has no emotions even though he's cute

Emotion and the lack of it are tools. Emotionless may be a bit trickier to justify or do right, but it can be done.

I'm a not a fan of Rei from Eva, but honestly she hadn't had the chance to develop a personality. No self value, she does what she does because people ordered her to do and, since the moment she wakes up from the cloning tube, she's treated as military/scientific asset. The only contact she has with other kids of her age are in school, where she is often absent due to work, and she can't connect because she has no life outside piloting a giant robot and being consistently wounded. No family figures, pop culture references, activities or life experiences in common. Expecting her to behave full of life and playful as Asuka (not exactly a healthy person btw) who had a troubling family, but at least appears to have grown in a community and experienced the real, world would be wrong.

Another good emotionless character that comes to mind is Mikasuke from Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans. His role is of a weapon. Orga plans and Mikasuke executes. His lack of emotion is probably the combination some inherent psychopathy and the fact that he was a poor kid on violent streets, then a slave, then endured multiple painful surgical procedures that usually kill or cripple people. This materializes the idea of how dehumanizing the conditions were. The kids in IBO are workers not people, making the plot of liberation even more important, and Mika's lack of self-preservation causes Orga to consider how much he should push Mikasuke, because he knows Mika will kill himself to do it.

Edit, damn I should start paying attention to dates before writing.

My favorite one is Ononoki from Monogatari Series. The most funny thing it's her poses, catchphrases, and random interventions. It really doesn't suit an emotionless character, but like other things in the Monogatari Series, it is well done.

No, not really. The ones that I considered emotionless are not. They're just pessimistic and have outbursts of emotions for their moments/revelations.

I was just thinking about this the other day. I think that there are different types of emotionless characters, but the ones that are literally just always emotionless, monotone, expressionless, etc., are totally boring to me and I don't see the appeal. No hate for anyone who likes these kinds of characters (I like a lot of characters other people find annoying), but I personally just don't like them. And they're in a loooot of anime, and especially at this point, I'm just totally tired of seeing them.
