So how many of you speak Japanese well enough to watch anime in it's original (unsubbed) format?

Don't forget to vote in the poll!!!

To be honest, I understand 5-6 words, FOR SURE, in every sentence. Which, then, I can make out the rest by the actions.

Nice. Definitely doing better than me. I'm just now getting to the point where I'll recognize verbs and conditions and be like "Hey! I sort of know what he just said."

Sensen. Nihongo ga wakarimasen. T_T

~Our college offers free Japanese and other language tutorials every once in a while. But sadly, I didn't find the time for that. The program lasts for months until you learned how to read, write and speak and then earn a certificate after you past the final exam. I don't know what's written in that certificate though, maybe something like "Ore wa sugoi janai desu ka." wahahahaha.

I prefer to attend a review class than that. But maybe, if I decided to work in Japan, I'll just enroll myself in some language school or something. :p

hehe i understand all the words there "Ore wa sugoi janai desu ka." not sure how to put it together though. kind of reads like "i am not too amazing" or something like that.

@ kiosy, My university just started offering Japanese courses this past fall semester. And of course I only have one year left here so I will only be able to take the courses for that long.

That's still good. You'll definitely learn a lot with that time!

As for me, I can't even concentrate on my academic subjects. And I still need to double my efforts for the board exam. I'm too lazy to add other extra curricular things. Haha. ;p

Many ways you can translate that I think. I would probably say:
"Am I not amazing?"
I took Japanese 1... three years ago? Self-studied since then, but I think only my vocabulary has improved. I'm hopefully taking Japanese 1 again next year ( because I'm rusty and want an easy A ) And then take Japanese 2 the year after that ABROAD ^^

And yes, I can watch RAWs if I have too ; )

I think the problem in that sentence is the missing punctuation.

"Ore wa sugoi, janai desu ka?" :p

Oh well, I wish I could watch raw too. >.<

I know a little myself, but by no means enough to watch anime RAW. Sometimes what I [think I] understand differs from a sub, but then I might just be falling into the trap like the line above can give.

Definitely not the easiest language I've studied, but it's the most interesting.

Same here. College credit Spanish through my high school. It's rather easy actually, but being forced to learn any language is super annoying. On the other hand, I'm having loads of fun in my Japanese self-study. :)

Its a requirement also in my high school. I took 3 years of Spanish. I actually learn to read better than speak it. I don't like being forced to learn it, but it was fun.

I want to take a risk in Japanese reading. :)

Interesting. I've never heard of someone starting to watch anime because they were learning Japanese. It's always the other way around. Oh well, that just shows you that there are even more reasons to watch anime.

Anime kinda happened at that same exact time of learning Japanese for me. I joined my School's Anime club when I started school along with Japanese class. And after I moved I started watching anime online.

the worst is when you understand that in some moments the subs are obviously lame, but can't reject them, as you won't get full idea of speaking stuff without them
it's exactly my case i began studying Japanese in autumn, as went to university, so now i can understand about 1/3 of stuff they are speaking about, but it's not enough for watching raw anime T_T
"What is this? Where are we? Why did you bring me here? Why are you l-locking the door? What are you..."

Uh-huh. It's so annoying when some people take too much liberty with the dialogue. But then again, I can't complain since I'm not anywhere near fluent yet.

True, but when you know that the subs are wrong, that's when you can feel accomplished ^^

sometimes it's really so^^
but still have a lot of things to learn, and time when i will be able to watch raw anime is pretty far, and may be it's not very polite of me to complain about subs and people who make them, but just think that if one gets down to make subs he should do it perfectly or not to do at all
that's why lately try to find subs of teams who are really good in it
"What is this? Where are we? Why did you bring me here? Why are you l-locking the door? What are you..."

Well, I cannot say I fully understand or even understand most of it, but still, I have to watch RAW from time to time (Lately, for example, Soul Eater, subs come out just so late). So I know quite a lot of "anime" vocabulary and also many verbs (and some formes, like -tai), question words and stuff, and that helps me to understand it well enough when it doesn't come to complicated dialoges/monologes.
I haven't studied it seriously yet, I'm planning starting next year (it's my first year in the university, math there is just so tough I cannot find any more time), but I made quite a few attemps to study it myself, I know hiragana, most of the katakana (although kanji is problematic, I'm trying to learn and remember but for now not more than 10-20) and some basics about structure of the sentence and stuff.
Plus I learn most of the songs by hard as I listen almost to japanese music only, from anime. And as I pay attention to lyrics and check them, I learn many words that way) That's kinda my way of learning, at least I know I won't forget any of them any time soon, as they're connected with memories (best way to learn any language). But it's not much anyway)

And about other languages, I think spanish isn't that bad) I haven't studied it, but I can read some texts understanding most of it since I'm studying french and italian (this one by myself) and they're really similiar to spanish, aspecially italian)
Plus I'm studying german for a year now... Not to mention I had to learn english as well)
Btw, what other languages you plan to/are studying already?

I can only make out some words here and there. I just might know a slight idea about what's going on...it depends on the anime though.

I prefer to watch my anime in Japanese with English subtitles. I think it's better that way. Just like I prefer to eat my Chinese food with chopsticks rather than a fork. The food just tatstes better that way. LOL.

I know how to greet my husband when he comes in from work in the proper Japanese fashion as well as to say grace in Japanese. LOL It's loads of fun.

When I said grace for my parents in Japanese for my parents my dad was like "whatever". LOL.
