THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Just saw it with Keyhole TV, and it was far better than the first time I read it in the manga. Well of course, the trick itself was a bit disappointing and I can not deny that I hoped much more (an unsolved case of Yusaku Kudo which is just a mere accident), but it was really entertaining (more than I thought) and I didn't remember there was a hilarious fight scene at the end. An overall good episode.
Btw, the next one looks promising even if it is just a filler.

kinda preferred the manga version because its easier to follow and all that but it was pretty decent episode, I always like how Sera looks

Kinda just wish that Aoyama would put up the heat and give little clues that Yusaku was Anokata, even misleading clues would be freaking cool because he does know for sure that everyone believes its either Agasa or Yusaku

Need to check out what the trailer for next ep was then hmm

One of the best episodes I've ever seen!!
Clues are getting thrown here and there throughout all of the ep!!

Let's begin:

Mod Note: Long verbatim summary placed in spoiler. Images removed for violating guidelines and posting rules.

Next two weeks are filler. Couldn't give a damn about any of these episodes.
Till next manga based episode~
Might as well get myself back into the fansubbing industry once this semester is over and as M.T. is approaching extremely close!

Considering that Shin'ichi is supposed to be a "genius" teen detective, he certain is having trouble keeping his mouth closed lately. It's a good thing that Ran is all "brawn" and "no brains"... <LOL>

I still miss the old Ran with the big chest, compared to today's "politically correct" Ran... <g>

I can't believe how they turned this interesting case to shit. I mean really, coins and candy. That's ridiculous even by Detective Conan standards and how did the kid have different sized candy. All that stuff coincidentally being exactly the same and then the blood, oh my gosh that's just bad.

Luckily it had Subaru figuring out about Conan which is some progress, but sadly that was caused by Conan, he almost got caught by Ran and them two times.

Sera is really annoying, no doubt Subaru now knows everything.

Case File #690/#691
Yusaku Kudo's Cold Case

Important Milestone:
  • Subaru Okiya finds out about Conan's identity.

Yet another person connects the dots on Conan's identity. For what it's worth, Akai knew about his identity already so it's not technically something new.

Even so, this case is a good example of the significant and ongoing drop in quality in Gosho's writing. When a character's intelligence is sacrificed for the sake of plot-convenience, that is bad writing. When the mystery hinges on extremely uncommon contrived coincidences, that is bad writing. Both of these traits have been present in the newer manga-adapted episodes for quite some time, although I'm now unsure whether if this applies to the older ones too. Then again, Detective Conan has been categorized under the "shounen" demographic, so I probably shouldn't be surprised. They never cease to justify my cynicism for them.

This case begins with Sera, Ran, and Sonoko talking about a cold case that Shinichi's father left unsolved a decade ago. In the very next scene, we cut to a body that left the same dying message from the same cold case the girls talked about just minutes ago! What the hell? I could understand if they talk about the case AFTER they found the body, but to have coincidentally talked about it and then magically stumbling upon a similar case? My god, Gosho! What are you doing?! And the plot-contrivance doesn't end there! Beside the body, there is a new can of beer in the slot of a vending machine, implying that the guy dropped dead at the precise moment after he slotted in a coin and selected the beer of his choice! What's contrived about this? Well, Sera uses this convenient 'clue' to deduce that he's an alcoholic, that's what! What an unrealistic clue! What if he didn't select a drink? What if the machine was broken? Oh no, the truth is gone forever because our young detective couldn't deduce it based on something that doesn't just magically appear whenever she needs!

And it gets even worse. Right as the victim was dying, he dropped his wallet, his cigarette, and his pocket change on the floor, and they magically align together on the same spot so that when his blood spilled on them, they would form the exact same Japanese kanji character from a cold case a decade ago...

And that's not even including the whole fiasco of Conan suspiciously rushing to the toilet when Sera suggested for Ran to call Shinichi on the phone! Jeez, couldn't he just keep two separate phones and keep the 'Shinichi' one turned off or set to silent mode? How the hell do I come up with this stuff when a brilliant detective like him didn't? And what's worse, he rushed out of the toilet in the middle of the call holding the voice-changing bow-tie in-hand, resulting in Subaru learning his technique of imitating his adult voice as he hid behind a corridor. Way to drop his guard. What if it wasn't Subaru standing there but Ran? How is he going to get out of that pickle THIS time?

And there's more! It's not just Gosho; the studio messed up too! Look at the amateur quality of the character faces in this shot:

Sigh. The things I do for love.

Honestly, I was looking forward to this case. I mean, the main character solving a case his father failed to solve, therefore proving himself not only to have inherited his intellect but also to be an even greater detective than him? How cool is that for character development? It's like Tony Stark picking up the pieces of Howard Stark in Iron Man 2 and surpassing him to greater heights. But instead, such a potentially interesting development was squandered on Yusaku not failing, but being right all along about a miraculous coincidence. But, to Gosho's credit, Conan did feel relieved that his father didn't simply run away from a case at the end, so I guess there was some form of character development there, just not a very interesting one - not even close.

That Being Said...

There is something cool, something funny, and something emotional near the end in Part 2, including:

Something Emotional: As Conan expresses his relief regarding his father's abandonment of the cold case, Ran sees a trace of Shinichi in his expression

Something Cool: By the time this flipped coin drops in Sera's clutches, the thugs would have fallen on the ground.

Something Funny: I wonder if the American licensing studio paid them to say this line.

So yes, it's not a total loss, and there are some small redeeming qualities to it, being a manga-adapted case after all.

Last but not least...

Something Cute: Sera implying that she once had a crush on Shinichi.

Overall Rating: ★★★
Mystery Complexity Level: Dumb Luck
Was the victim a jerk? No

But didn't subaru give Conan a hint to solve the case? Doesn't this mean that Conan hasn't reached the level of intelligence his father has yet and that Subaru is actually smarter?

Good point, but I was actually referring to the high number of people Conan has allowed to find out his secret, sometimes unintentionally. For a detective that tries to hide his identity, he's not very good at it.

Haha yeah thats true :) So is Subaru smarter than Conan because of the fact that Conan needed a hint from him?

Probably yes, considering the true identity of Subaru. He's a highly experienced adult compared to Conan after all.

It's just me or is Conan getting ridiculously sloppy with his secret lately?
I found something in life, is just that I'm still trying to figure out what is it.

Wow I hated this. Conan had WAY too many slip ups. Did not enjoy Conan giving away his identity to Subaru like that... it was too easy. He pretty much caused it. Also, wtf Ran! How are you gonna tell him "uh Shinichi told me not to tell u but" ???? and you do it anyway? Bruh.

Back in the 90s Ran was often shown with a bigger chest. I remember one of the first episodes with Heiji when his GF was upset with Ran and accused Ran of trying to flaunt her chest at Heiji. So Ran switched sweaters with the GF so that her bust wouldn't stick out as much.

That pic is from 90s episode, and I recently rewatched one of them too. so mate really idk what you are talking about but ok i guess.,, lets say sometimes i'd overlook slight changes in her bust and your sharp eye wouldn't haha

Oh yea, Subaru definitely knows that Conan is Shinichi. I mean like how many times can you say “oh Shinichi told me” and get away with it?…but then again this is DC and there is no logic to any of it.

Sonoko wasn't lying when she referred masumi sera as "shotacon" some episodes ago lol she had her eyes on him but even so the truth was probably a harsh one for her cause she never stood a chance against ran mouri aka the chosen one in the heroine battle royal. Its true that kudou shinichi is taken cause the main heroine slot has been fulfilled since the chapter one but conan slot is still empty......masumi gotta shoot her shot lol
