On this particular subject I could even write a long review explaining all of this, but I will give my opinion briefly, I finished reading the Novel last year and it was one of the best reading experiences I have ever had because the story manages to keep you hooked until the end in a unique and unforgettable immersion. I really admire this author's writing because there were few works that made me feel this way.

The main reason people hated this anime was because of the pacing of the episodes, with a lot of things happening one after the other without much explanation, and in fact many events and dialogues have already been cut from the anime or placed in a different order, I will not recommend people to continue watching if it bothers them that much, there's also the fact that it hasn't yet received a Japanese dub like To Be Hero X, and this probably puts off people who don't like watching anime dubbed in Chinese or are simply not very used to this type of anime, but do not forget that this is above all a mystery story and that not everything will be explained from the beginning, this is already one of the best anime of this season both in animation and story and it only gets better with each episode, including the pacing of the last episode that came out was already much better compared to the first three and if you want to know everything that was cut from the anime or what will happen after the anime ends, I strongly recommend reading the Novel, I guarantee that for fans of supernatural and mystery it will be an unforgettable story!

I for one love it. As a Dark Fantasy lover, I have it good with 2 great shows & one ok/fair show. I'll continue with all.
As for LoTM pacing complaints, the show is slowing down & really starting to gain it's focus now.

Considering I have now watched 4 episodes and am just starting to understand the basic plot (through repetition of key ideas alone), shows a few problems with the show.

People who won't watch Chinese dub make no sense - I'm a hardcore sub watcher, but it's not like I can pick up more than a handful of words watching it in JP...

As a fan of mysteries, the LotM donghua fails to engage or provoke any sense of mystery. It's a whole lot of Proper Nouns and stat sheets that seems completely uninterested in engaging with an audience who isn't already fans.

A great example of an ongoing mystery is The Summer Hikaru Died, which actually manages to keep the audience immersed without confusion. Being confusing and unclear is not the same as being a mystery. It's a cultivation power fantasy show masquerading as a mystery.

I don't think I will ever read the novel but I trust the anime studio. I liked the anime very much and I thing the way they are doing the mystery part is good enough. It might be harder for this to go mainstream without a English dub but the chinese dub is good enough. I watched link click with English dub and it was great for me and that is probably the only thing holding this series back from going mainstream. Japanese dub in a chinese anime just feels weird.

I also think Hikaru is very good and I already consider it one of my favorite manga, are you already in the last chapters that came out? I arrived a few days ago!

It’s because of the pacing, they are moving from plot point to plot point, skipping the details, character dynamics etc, and leaving no time for the mystery to build up. Read the novel if you are interested, it was great at building up the suspense and mystery.

The first episode was a bit confusing, but the plot made sense pretty quickly after that.

The powers, on the other hand, seem to have little or no consistency or understandable structure. Abilities just happen, then other abilities just happen in response, they look very cool but seem all over the place.

I think this is in part because they seem to swap between abilities, magic, and prayers constantly and spend little or no time explaining anyone's abilities. instead, they just seem to throw them at the viewer and expect that you'll figure them out.

The anime adapted 76 something something chapters in the first 3 episodes, volume 1 of book 1 is divided into 3 physical releases, the first of which covers the 70 something chapters the dongua covered and it's close to 500 pages long, so yeah fast pacing is a major issue

I watched the first episode at my chinese friends house. I noted it looked chinese before he even mentioned that, and watching the first episode, it was very obviously a chinese show. The animation was often janky and ugly with occasional bright spots, and the story was ridiculously fast. The first episode was so bad it leads me to believe the score is a result of bot reviews to boost it. If you like it that's great and I'm happy for you. It's objectively not an 8.5 show. Not even a 7.5.

I just need an English dub or JP dub because I feel like I don't understand a single thing that's happening and I'm definitely missing a lot of context trying to watch it as it is with no other dubs available STILL... After five weeks. I think it's really interesting, so I'm kinda disappointed that they still haven't added at least JP dub yet.

@killzone3abc Well, everyone has their own opinion and I'm a big fan of the original so to be honest the rating is at least 8 because even though the story might be confusing for a lot of people, the animation is already much better than the average seasonal anime so I don't see why the rating should be less than 8, besides it's only that high because there are a lot of Novel fans who made it go up, as well as new fans too.

I haven’t gotten that far into it yet but it seems pretty interesting plot wise of these time travelers being trapped in that century of france, mentioning tarot cards made it interesting for me too I have my own deck. The animation is such high quality I recommend giving it a watch even though the pacing is so quick it can get confusing.

You're scoring the show based on the book then. If decent animation makes a show an 8, then your standards are very low. My friend spoke highly of the original web novel as well. but said they cut a lot and sped the pace up quite a bit. The first episode was so bad I couldn't imagine it recovering enough to be rated that high.

The only prior information I received was that it was based on a chinese web novel that was really good. The first episode was really bad, with that being the only outside information. It's just not good. Glad you like it though.

@killzone3abc No, I take into account the animation and story to evaluate, everyone does that, but if you have never read the Novel you will not understand what I am saying because the immersion of reading is out of this world (literally) but I agree with you and your friend, the first 2 episodes should have been much better and you are not wrong about me not having a very high standard for anime because I really watch all genres, whether old or new anime and I honestly prefer to watch an anime from the 90s with inferior animation but a great story and characters than to watch a soulless anime like Kimetsu no Yaiba where the plot almost does not exist and everything comes down to the fights and the beautiful animation of ufotable.

I am really enjoying the anime. Sure, I was curious and wanted to know hows the novel, but the 1400 chapters threw me off, thats tooooo many chapters to cover, I’ve read some, but jumping some arcs in between. Despite all that, I’m completely invested.

It all makes sense though? Well, it does require you to pay full attention to it and the still not fixed subtitles from Episode 2 don't make it any easier, but you should still get the gist of things at a minimum if you actually pay attention.

For the same reason why Klein could control the grey fog space the moment he realized that he had control over it and why some abomination that lost all rationality created from two failed beyonders who definitely never flew before somehow knew how to control their wings to fly in a straight line. Beyonders obviously know instinctively how to use their powers.

What do you mean by him being "ok" with it all? Who says he is? What else is he supposed to do? Go into a corner and cry like some baby? He does what he does in order to go back home. I really don't understand what you even mean with this.

for example how did he know how to do that ritual thing to save the girl that was possed by the mirror he literly just got his powers or when he uses the powers to find people he acts like he is a expert.....like its normal i dont know just dosent feel right to me and like i said afther watching some videos about what context was cut out it feels like they just did a bad job at explaing stuff just to rush it....like in episode one it all makes more sens to me now afther understanding who the guy that reincarnated was and why he had that ritual that made hem summon that fog...in the anime he just randomly decides il use bread and go back home huh ? but theres more to it...they just skiped it....you can say im dumb or maybe the translation is not up to par but its not just me that says the anime has bad rushed story even people that read the novel said it

People that like this show are either novel readers, people that are willing to view outside content / rewatch episodes, or have a far-above average tolerance (to the point of it being bad) for ambiguity in a show. A show that caters to these groups of people and ignores the majority of chill TV-watchers is not going ever going to reach mass popularity. If your gut reaction to people that don't understand the show is that they're not paying attention, they should watch outside videos, or they should rewatch episodes, you should understand that the best shows are able to be enjoyed as shows and not just analytical assignments. Being able to dive deep and break apart details should be a fun bonus, not a requirement for a show. I tend to be a novel reader for most works, so I was planning to read LoTM anyways.

@Mizuwa It's really not as difficult as you're making it out to be. You just have to think while watching and you will probably understand the majority of what's happening. You definitely don't need any outside content to understand it, except if you want all the lore.

Only problem is that subs go by in like 0.5 seconds cause the Chinese talk like auctioneers apparently and most people don't wanna go back to read them. So probably dubs will help.

@Mizuwa @Mizuwa I mean when did a mistery show needed
Cut content videos from youtubers
Chibiepisodes and mini eps that explain and expand the lore that are canon
Every novel reader saying "I can explain"

To even appreciate the "mistery" of the show, is not mistery if the series makes confused,mistery=/=confused
It fails at conveying "whats/why going to happen" which you would usually ask yourself in a mystery show instead you ask yourself "whats happening"
I know more lore than the characters too now, which feels there reverse of the horrible anime Lazarus when there was there was great chemistry but no plot
Now in this series we have great plot but not chemistry between character, not because they dont have because they dont show at all, is just plot after plot then lore then plot then lore
I like the show but I just dislike the fanbase that feels like they're disgusted when criticizing the show and suggest you to drop it lol

Also first 3 episodes were rushed because tencent forced the production studio to reach clown fight by episode 3
And after that production quality is just getting better (episode 6 was by far the best episode)

@Mizuwa oh forgot they admit the pacing is bad
Then suggest you to drop it
There were literally like 5 posts addressing and admitting the pacing, yet they're still oblivious to even saying its not an issue because that how it's make out to be

@nexustom some people might not even like this type of anime/don't like to pause to read subtitles and think over them and ykw thats okay but at that point you are missing out on most of the story
But still direction and pacing have improved after the 3 episodes (to the point of being close to perfect in episode 6)
Dub has also helped a lot of people so i recommend people who dropped the anime because they were confused to rewatch ep1 and 2 again

I agree with rewatching the EXACT same episode but now theres a whole other dub that people are saying actually helped them understand the story better? idk man if you don't want to rewatch it in another dub then don't do it i don't decide it for you

wasn't even toxic lol why are you getting defensive
yes i agree direction and pacing were bad for the first three episodes but i also believe the rest of the episodes have clearly gotten better at storytelling/direction so its not like im blindly calling this "a masterpiece" and "best thing i've ever laid my eyes on" and i admit there are some valid criticisms to be made but the donghua as a whole is improving every episode so give it some time

It’s because of the pacing, they are moving from plot point to plot point, skipping the details, character dynamics etc, and leaving no time for the mystery to build up. Read the novel if you are interested, it was great at building up the suspense and mystery.

Sadly, I've not heard much good about the novel either. Not that I'm one to read webnovels in the first place. Thanks for the reasonable reply though I usually get yelled at haha.

You should give the show another shot, the pacing was fast at the beginning but they are finally putting it together. Lots of donghua onlys enjoyed the last few episodes especially the latest, people are finally seeing the vision for this series.

@Oliverseasky I don't think my opinion will change. Even after watching up to episode 7, I still feel it's a work made for those who have read the novel.

@Skullwild Since time is limited, I think many people spend time watching Japanese anime.

That’s totally fair! I still see lots of donghua onlys enjoying it, but it might not be for everyone. Is it because you don’t understand what is happening? Feel free to ask questions, and I can try to answer them with no spoilers.

It’s kinda funny since the biggest complaint I see from novel readers is that the adaptation is catering too much to the donghua onlys.

I been appreciating the series more and more as a novel reader, there are so much detail with Chekhov’s guns being laid everywhere. You can tell the amount of effort that went into the making of this.
