Thoughts on Chimera Ant arc?

What are your thoughts on this arc? I personally think overall it's a fantastic arc but there were lots of moments where I just started to feel bored and a lot of the new characters they introduced, I just couldn't care less for most of them even when I tried to. Meruem is an amazing character tho

Overall it's one of the best arcs in the anime, if not the best.

First you get to meet face to face concepts as life from Meruem and death from Netero.

Second of all, something not common in main shonens; the shadow of the protagonist. Gon accepting a darker, ruthless, stronger side of him to avenge Kite, as one of his only links to his father.

But yes, maybe the parts when they were planning their attack or the episodes that in the anime were one key minute, might have being boring. But it was only to build towards all the amazing fights and confrontations we see later on in this arc.

At some point it might be slow paced, but never boring. Everything had an importance, except maybe some extra side characters. But that's just to give some content to the series.

I really enjoyed watching that arc, even though it indeed felt slow at times.
I personally liked the new characters, they were interesting so as the power system among the ants.
The ending got me in tears though, Meruem was a great character, I liked his character development.

I personally hated that arc. It ruined HxH for me. HxH is a great show if you remove that arc. I hate how slow paced it is. Also the dialogue in that arc are very boring. Not nearly as good as rest of HxH has. Finally the overuse of the narrator really bugged me throughout that arc. Meruem and Komugi's story was the only thing that kept me going through that arc. I didn't cared about anything else.

one of the best arc in anime if not the best. Amazing storytelling, character development and characterization, fights. Everything about it is top notch. It may not be flawless but it is still amazing.

I feel similarly. It’s good, but it was much longer than it needed to be and the pacing was bad. Several unnecessary characters, excessive narration, plot threads that go nowhere at all. These all just mucked up the experience.

The fights between Netero vs Meruem & Gon vs Pitou definitely delivered though. Those salvaged it from being a bad arc. I know many think Meruem and Komugi’s relationship is the highlight of the Chinera Ant arc, but for me it was just alright. Nothing special.

pacing is good for most of the part. There are only few instances where pacing can be considered bad. I think people exaggerate when they complain about pacing.

Several unnecessary characters, plot threads that go nowhere at all.

slow motion =/= poorly paced. Pacing has to do with how well tension and rhythm can be levied across scenes. And palace invasion, specially stair climbing scene did really good job at creating tension.

Brilliant arc that made it feel like an entirely different show with its more darker theme. However, it went on for much longer than it needed to be, with some episodes even feeling like fillers.

Ruined the show for me, honestly. I rate the rest of Hunter x Hunter a high 8/10 or low 9/10, but Chimera Ant dropped it to barely a 7/10.

Way too bloated in terms of characters, as everyone and their grandmother got a 30+ minute fight scene that no one asked for. Also seemed like too many episodes accomplished nothing narratively. I feel like the arc could've been completed in 40 episodes or fewer and nothing of value would have been lost.

It felt drawn out and overall boring while I was watching, I had to watch a recap on the arc afterwards because of its slow pacing.

Had some amazing fights though so looking back it was great, can’t say it’ll be in my rewatch list though compared to the other hxh arcs.

Yes. Meruem with that girl made the arc so much better. Gon and Killua were also great. Many powerful scenes right there. But I got bored quite often. It was longer than needed imo.

Best arc in all of anime in my opinion from what I’ve seen. I hear people think the middle is really slow and boring before the actual attack but I didn’t feel that at all

Iconic, honestly I think it is one of the best tone shifts in anime. My reasoning is that throughout the first couple of arc's while death happened this was the arc that really pushed the notion that "oh crap this isn't the happy go lucky adventure shonen I thought it was", and the best part is that even though all of this gruesome stuff was happening it never felt edgy. My personal hot take was that the length was fine for the story it was telling, the pacing was always just in the right spot the buildup always felt deserved. Honestly I think the length made me more enthralled because now I've had time to love these new characters and the fact that they get ripped away hurts more. I feel like it would have lost its impact if it was shorter.

i think it's only slightly overrated. remember getting bored at the stairs scene and it's not the best hxh arc from me. other then that, it's pretty solid.

It’s really good, but a bit too drawn out. I knew most of the plot points that were coming, so at times it was torture just waiting for it to actually happen.

The beginning and middle made no sense to me but the later half with the king was so good. Also the still of Neferpitou under the tree in one of the earlier episodes is probably my favorite image in any anime

Felt very long in the moment but it paid off in the end. One of my favorite arcs in anime. However now that it’s been years since i’ve watched it i’ve caught myself thinking more fondly of previous arcs like heavens arena and yorknew. But I do think overall Chimera Ant is the best arc, even if it was a bit slow at times.

I thought the arc was consistently great until they invaded the kings palace. After that it was both horribly paced and inconsistent. I especially did not like the king surviving Netero's rose because it seemed at the time the arc was just being pointlessly dragged out. But even with all these complaints it still is my favorite. I think it was great conceptually and at times it was amazing, but when Togashi fumbled he never dropped the ball too hard. In fact, HxH always came back from something I didn't like with something even better. Like how I hated Meruem surviving. The ending we got as a result of that was WAY better than what would've happened if he had simply died, even with the rather rough episodes that followed. Instead of just the message being about the cruelty of humanity, the actual ending expanded the kings relationship with Komugi and made him be "human" in a way. That's not the only example but I don't want to go too deep. So yeah in short the arc really surprised me by always making something good out of every writing decision, making things I thought to be bad good.

Overall my favorite arc of all time. May not be the most consistent pacing wise; but the themes, character development/parallels, and ost more than make up for it in my opinion. “We are no different from the ants. No, we are far worse.”

It has awesome build up and tension from the start. Episode 135 is a masterpiece, couldn't stop crying at it. Only the middle of it was sometimes boring with those side fights and Jupi same attack pattern (fast punches animation) for example.
To sum up the start and finish are perfect.

The feeling that got everybody was the intensity and pressure on this arc. This arc gave one of the world's most best story arc ever. Really hoping for the anime to come back.

First like 20-30 episodes of this arc dragged hard. Mereum is one of the best villains in shonen and that saved it for me. But I almost dropped the show before he showed up

I enjoyed the arc but narration was what stands out as being annoying. It slows down the scenes and pulls me out of the moment. Prior to this arc narration was not as much therefore it never stood out.

It was alright. The original trajectory of the show was going to be good. they focused too much on the ant's arc. I wanted to see how Hunters evolve once they get their license. the show felt like it was all about the Ant's towards the end.
