With MAL's new overhaul to Genres/Themes/Demographics, we know that some things are a little screwy with the challenge, so here are a few notes for the items that are affected:

Magic

• The first significant change is that the Magic genre has been completely removed. Luckily, our good friend Jhiday has worked a little magic of his own, and has archived the full list of all anime on MAL that had the Magic tag before the overhaul.
  
• You can see the full list over at the AWCC HoF (you don't need to log in or be a member to view the list):

• We have also archived the list in our official club here:

• The anime on that list will be valid for items requiring you to watch an anime tagged as Magic.
  
  Items 64-68
  
• Many Genre tags have been changed to Theme tags, but the anime that use them have remained pretty much the same. For our purposes, nothing has really changed for those.
  • For example, Police was a Genre, and now it's a Theme, but if your card has an item that says "Watch an anime tagged as Police", you can still watch any anime with the Police Theme tag.
• Dementia has been renamed Avant Garde, so if your card asks you to watch a Dementia anime, any anime listed as Avant Garde will be valid for that item. Similarly:
  • Thriller has been renamed Suspense
  • Shoujo Ai has been renamed Girls Love
  • Shounen Ai has been renamed Boys Love
• You do not need to change the text of your challenge items to match the new tags.
  
• Any anime that had the Magic tag prior to the overhaul will still be valid for items requiring the Magic tag.
  
  Items 69-73
  
• These items are unaffected, since they all use tags and lists that are not dependent on MAL's tagging system.
  
  Items 74-75
  
• For the moment, we don't know how Anime+ is going to handle this overhaul. For now, the tags are all still grouped together as Genres, so it's business as usual. If this changes, we'll update this post. If Magic is your genre for this, we'll work with you.
  
  Item 76
  
• If you started this item before Sep 15:
  • All Genres, Themes, and Demographics listed on the anime's MAL page will count toward the two maximum. If the anime you used now has more than two tags as a result of the overhaul, but was valid when you watched it, it'll still be valid. Basically, if it was valid at the time, you should be okay. If you're at all unsure, just ask and we'll be happy to confirm.
• If you started this item on or after Sep 15:
  • Only tags listed next to Genres will count toward the two maximum.
    • For example, Ping Pong would be valid:
      Genres: Drama, Sports
      Theme: Psychological
      Demographic: Seinen
      But only if it was started on or after Sep 15.
  
  Item 77
  
• Genres, Demographics, and Themes all count toward the six tags needed for this item.
  • For example, Monster Musume would be valid:
    Genres: Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, Ecchi
    Theme: Harem
    Demographic: Seinen
  
  Basically...
  
• If it was valid when you watched it, you can almost certainly keep it there. Any screenshots you have for questionable items will help your inspectors tremendously, and please don't hesitate to ask us for clarification.
  
• And if you completed your challenge before the overhaul, then you don't have to deal with any of this mess. Just kick back and relax!

Hello everyone! I hope your Fall is going well. Mine's pretty good, I guess. Kinda cold where I am, but can't really complain. Anyway, this is your friendly reminder that the 2021 Anime Watching Challenge period ends on November 30, which is exactly two weeks from today!

This means that your challenge should be completed and your turn in should be posted by 11:59 PM PST on November 30. The thread will be locked after that point, and no more turn-ins will be accepted, so please make plans to have your challenge done and turned in before then. Please.

What if you wait until the very last minute to put everything together and something unexpected happens, like your power goes out, or there's a meteor, or your computer spontaneously turns into sand, and then gets sand everywhere? That would be awful, even without the challenge to worry about, so please be proactive and get it turned in as early as you can.

Restriction Changes


• A change in the wording for the Seasonal restrictions:
  
  • Cryomancer - Complete an entire quest using anime that started airing January, February, or March

  • Pyromancer - Complete an entire quest using anime that started airing in July, August, or September

• We've just removed the actual season names. This is to eliminate any potential confusion when you have something like Kimetsu no Yaiba: Yuukaku-hen; which started airing in December, but says Winter 2022 on its MAL page. This anime would only be valid for Geomancer, since it started airing in December.

He'll still be around the AWC Club and the Discord Server as a regular participant though! Just a quick reminder that MAL is going to be undergoing some maintenance tomorrow for their new account infrastructure. You may experience interruptions with both the website and the apps. It might be a good idea to back up your information just in case something goes awry.

In case you don't know how to export your list(s):

• Go into your anime list/manga list (Watching/Reading, for example)
  
• On the left hand side there is a note icon -> this is the export button, which allows you to download a copy of your anime list/manga list
  
• Click Export My List and save the file on your computer
  
• If you're having issues or your list layout does not have the required button you can also go here

For those who have fully completed the challenge, congratulations and take a well deserved break until the 2023 challenge is released!

For those who have submitted their turn-ins, we are working hard to get them inspected as soon as possible. You will get a PM from the AWC_mod once your form has been inspected, no matter if you have a perfect form or need to make corrections. If you have corrections please note that you need to respond to the PM once they are completed so we know to go back and verify.

Hey everyone!

One last reminder that the challenge officially ends TODAY. You'd technically have at least until 11:59 PM PST (which is 15 hours away), but I wouldn't procrastinate, please post ASAP because once that thread is closed, its staying closed.

As well, if you didn't manage to get to the difficulty level you wanted, go ahead and submit for whichever you actually qualify for. Just make sure you delete any extra items you might have so your form can get inspected without errors (Ex. Lv.4 is 65 items, so make sure you only have 65 even if you did more trying to get to Lv.5)

First thing's first - the challenge will NOT be released January 01. We're working very hard to get everything ready as soon as possible, so please be patient! As always, there will be a ping on Discord/share in the AWC club when the challenge is officially released.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2022 challenge - we had a lot of fun coming up with the restrictions and titles, and we were very happy to see that so many of you put them to incredible use. Once all the forms have been inspected/completed the plan is to put together a visual representation of what restrictions were used and how often.

To answer a few questions regarding the 2023 challenge:

Why hasn't the 2023 challenge been released yet?

• We need a little more time to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible

Does this mean I can't watch any anime in 2023 yet?

• Not at all! Any anime that you start January 01, 2023 will count toward the AWC 2023 challenge once it is released

To answer a few questions regarding the 2022 challenge:

Why aren't you done inspecting them yet, shouldn't they have been done by December?

• Ideally, yes, that was the plan. However, with the number of restrictions and titles it takes us a little bit longer to go through inspections. A large portion of the challenge turn-ins were also submitted in November so we need a bit more time to get through them all

Am I still able to fix my 2022 challenge even though it's 2023 now?

• Yes you can still fix your challenge. However, be mindful that all anime you use in the challenge must have been started/completed in 2022. Anything watched in 2023 will not be a valid correction

How can I fix my 2022 challenge then if I can't watch new anime?

• You can use other anime that you watched during 2022. You can also swap anime around as long as you keep the minimum number of full quests for your Level and let us know what you have changed. If you need assistance feel free to ask an AWC staff member or reply to your PM

What happens if I didn't get a PM from the AWC_mod yet for the 2022 challenge?

• Don't be alarmed, we are still working on inspections for the 2022 challenge. You WILL receive a PM in due time, whether there are invalids to fix or your challenge is completed

What happens if I PM'd the AWC_mod for the 2022 challenge and I didn't get a reply?

• We have a lot of PMs to go through at the moment, so don't worry you will get a response

How will you know that I corrected my invalids?

• Please respond to the AWC_mod PM so that we know the corrections have been made. If we don't get a response we will not add you to the list of completed participants

Imgur Updates

As of May 15, 2023 the image hosting website imgur will be undergoing some changes:

• All sexually explicit images will be removed
  
• All images that are not getting enough views and not already tied to an account will be removed

Do you have an imgur account and were using it to host your images? If yes, you should not be affected (unless they are sexually explicit)

Were you just hosting your images anonymously on imgur? If yes, then you will need to save a copy of any images you want to keep. Examples: banners, item screenshots, signature/avatar images, etc.

MAL Maintenance

MAL will be undergoing a planned 3 hour maintenance on Friday, April 28.

We recommend doing a back-up of your anime and manga lists just in case something happens. How do you do that? Click on this link and choose which list you want to export.

MAL Music-Type Update

MAL has now removed all music-type anime from the rankings (they now show as N/A), so be careful when you are completing your challenges!

Same as with other changes, any anime that were watched before the change will still be valid for ranked items as long as any other criteria were met.

Hello everyone,

In case you haven't noticed, MAL has been offline since about 6AM PST due to Lain a vulnerability.

The MAL team is still investigating and don't know when MAL will be back online, so please sit tight for now! If you watch anime/read manga during this time it's recommended to keep a record in a notepad, spreadsheet, etc. so you can update MAL later.

I won't ping again until the issue has been resolved, but MAL has issued an official statement about the disruption. They still seem to be unclear how it happened and how soon it can be fixed.

They have indicated that no personal information has, to their knowledge, been compromised.

In case you were off doing other things MAL has been back up since last night (PST), as scheduled.

The MAL staff investigation did not reveal any any breach of users' personal information.

Please note that they had to restore the database to the last backup taken before the attack, which was on MAY 09 at 9:43PM PST (check here for your time zone). This means list updates, forum posts, about me edits, etc. will have to be re-added.

Kineta has made a thread about the maintenance if you want more details or if you have questions.

2] MAL is beta testing a "conversation view" in the forums, so things may start to look a bit different. If you are a MAL supporter you are able to try it out for ~2-3 weeks. We are unsure if or how this will affect AWC/MRC at this time.

The majority of the turn-ins were received in October/November so we would greatly appreciate your patience as we make our way through all the forms. We will do our best to get them inspected as soon as possible but please also remember that it is the Christmas season.

A PM will be sent from AWC_mod once your form has been inspected, no matter if the challenge has been successfully completed or if there are corrections to make. Once corrections have been made respond to the mod PM so that we can verify. Once verified we will add your name to the Completed Users list for the appropriate ending. If you received a PM stating that you completed the challenge but do not see your name on the Completed Users list please let the staff know. If you need some help with corrections ask in the Help/Discussion Thread on MAL or the ⁠⁠#awc-questions-support channel on Discord.

Since folks seem to be looking for ways to pass the time until the next AWC, I thought it might be nice to create a mini challenge.

A quick summary:

• It's winter bingo
  
• Not an official AWC challenge so full staff won't be involved - ask me if you have questions
  
• You don't need to join the AWC Yearly Challenge club to participate
  
• There is no time limit, although you can only start your anime on the day of or after your post date
  
• It's not intended to be rushed through; there are no MAL badges/"rewards" so you can just have fun with it!

AWC inspection PMs are still being sent out so please be patient for just a bit longer. If you responded to a PM from AWC_mod and haven't heard anything back yet don't worry too much, as we are prioritizing getting as many initial PMs out as we can.

If you receive a PM at the end of the year you can still make corrections in the new year! You won't be able to watch any new anime in 2024 to fix invalids but you will be able to move anime around or use anime that was started/finished in 2023 and not previously used in your challenge. If you need assistance with this please reach out to the AWC Staff.

A few things of note:
🔹 We tried our best but not everyone got their forms inspected before the new year. Don't worry though, you will still have a chance to make corrections! 2] There is a role for #book-club now! Grab that if you'd like to participate in reading some novels; we'll be closing the vote for our first book tomorrow evening (PST)

3] For item (47) "Watch an anime that is tagged with one of your top 2 Favorite Genres by Mean Score according to your MAL statistics and provide a screenshot," if the extra info asks you about another participant's stats please switch it out with

5] We are still working on 2023 forms so please be patient! This will not affect you being able to work on the 2024 challenge

Firstly, I'd like to give a shoutout to my amazing fellow AWC Team members, because this challenge would not be possible without their hard work. Thank you for everything you do!

It was a large challenge this year so hopefully you had fun working on it and didn't stress too much. Despite the daunting number of items many of you were able to finish, so congratulations! And if you weren't able to finish it this year, don't worry there is always next year!

For those who received a Completion PM from AWCmod: Congratulations, you can take this time to relax and contemplate what we will do for AWC 2025! If you haven't already be sure to grab some lovely Banners that were donated by your fellow participants.

For those who received an Inspection PM from AWCmod: Don't worry, you still have time to submit your corrections. There are a few notices before we wrap up the year:

1] We have an anime suggestion Google Doc open if you would like to participate (what it's for, you'll find out later :3) The deadline to respond is December 31, 2025 at 11:55 PM: https://forms.gle/MbPW2No119rsb58H6
Note: you do not need to sign in to participate

2] Sorry for the extreme delay on this, but we now have a 2025 role available in ⁠#roles , and you can also grab your title!

3] We are still working very diligently on inspecting the remaining forms. If you haven't gotten a response from AWC_mod yet, please be patient because you WILL get one, no matter if you have a perfect form or need to make corrections

• Note: Even if you receive a PM for invalids after December 31, you will still be able to make corrections
  
• The only true deadline is that any new anime watched for corrections must be finished by December 31, 2025 at 11:55 PM
  
• If you already received a PM from AWC_mod and have sent a response back we are still working through those as well
