We would like to inform everyone that a 10 hour maintenance window has been scheduled for August 17, 2022 between the hours of 12AM to 10AM PDT. You can also see this in your local time zone using this link.

Please note that the maintenance will affect both the website and our apps.

This maintenance is required for the release of our new account infrastructure, which is the first major release in MyAnimeList's backend renewal project. The only noticeable difference from a member perspective will be a new account settings page, which will open on a different URL from before.

If you currently have TFA enabled, please note that you will need to re-enable TFA again after the maintenance period is over.

more security is always welcome

will this update the banning system somehow too? like partial banning? for example "youre banned from posting on the forums" but you can still use other features of the website

and maybe add 2 username feature? one username for the login and one for the community username like forums?

nor does it turn into another MALpocalypse

Looking forward to it.

What are some other planned backend features? Hopefully it includes something like alternate formatting for the forum, maybe like Markdown? That would be very cool if we could in account settings change our default format to markdown and then all new posts render in Markdown.

Hopefully you can revert the review system change while you're at it, it's really bad.

Any chances of a Dark Theme in the near future?

MAL is the only website that I consistently use which doesn't have a dark theme...

there exist third-party extensions that allow you to view the site in dark mode. granted, it would still be nice to have an already built-in feature.

I agree, as I wrote in the topic of the previous update.

If the new update makes it easier to make "good" changes then great. I'm just starting to worry that the site may take the visual direction of the biggest social networks, but I want to believe that you know what you're doing and the final result will be good.

Can't wait to see the update. I wonder how much will change.
Graduated High School in May of 2022. Summer vacation has finally arrived. I have once again regained the power of a new anime fan, being able to watch multiple anime episodes in a day. Time to binge-watch every single anime I can into the night until college arrives. SADGE.

Let's hope that MAL regularly does backups and we won't experience something like an unexpected data loss, messed up lists and so on. Hope things will go smoothly and looking forward to the update

2000% this.

The new review system is very bad and looks bad. And i really dont wanna scroll through a wall of text to see the score of the review.

I had to have a look about what this Pacific Time was. Like I expected, it was something very US specific. Why not use the UTC, like most international companies do?

I hope they change the old score system

most top sites like Netflix and steam use "yes" or "no" and the rating system from 0 to 10 is a disaster in 2022 and make users an endless fight to keep their entry in the top

Right in the middle of the day to late night for me, which is slightly inconvenient, but I'm sure this is for the greater cause, so I'll take it. I'll try and remember the date and time in my mind, but I am almost certain I'll still forget it when the time comes around xD.

Thanks to all the mods ~

lmao, what

if anything this website should allow ppl rate stuff in more ways than 1 to 10, just like AniList does, not remove the score for something that will lead to a bad change.

Also, Netflix just needs to know if ppl like the show to give new seasons, make spin-offs, etc, this is a user list, putting a yes or no that will lead to disaster, because you cant simplfy everything in yes or no

yes, we can't simply put everything on yes or no but do you have a better idea for voting entries in 2022? I said this system is better compared to others and has been proven by used by many big companies like Netflix and... I didn't say that yes or no is perfect, my point is that's the best choice for myanimelist to use in 2022

it seems like you don't know how the 1 from 10 system is inefficient

last year, fruits basket got to number 4 in top animes by toxic fans (full story in youtube video you can watch with English sub)

How to be a Toxic Anime Fan? + Anyone Can Mess With Myanimelist's Scoring System + English Subs

even this animetuber to show how garbage this system is, requested from his fans to vote 10/10 for an unknown entry and they brought it from 6000 ranked to rank 12! (Unfortunately, the video is not English subbed so read the post down)

Regarding the score

a little community can mess a title in top rank so you can't say "yes or no" system is good... it's garbage and disaster

The system from Anilist as I said is the perfect one, because it allows people customize how they grade their stuff, its not 1 to 10, its 1 to 5, its 1 to 100, etc, allowing more options on how you do the grades.

Could take this opportunity and fix the issue with my notifications that I reported 5 months ago.

I swear, if someone gave me the schema for the SQL database that handles notifications, I could study it for an hour and give a single SQL query that would (at least temporarily) fix the issue. Please, tell someone to delete every notification on my account during this maintenance, as a software developer, I am 95% sure this would at least temporarily fix the issue.

Note that I said I would take an hour to fix the issue. This is because I would have to study the database schema before making the query to guarantee I don't mess things up. A MAL dev, who is familiar with the database, should take less than 5 minutes to fix the issue. I am by no means saying an hour out of the 10 hour maintenance time should be devoted to fixing this particular issue.

Yes & No system is garbage for sure, you can't simplify things like that. Come on, a lot of people here ask for decimal rating system. Example of AniList is very useful.
