The anime ends in a good way. The series is beautiful. Returning the anime was a good decision to understand the anime more

The characters, production, and dialogues are beautiful, Pato is the best character, and the action is beautiful and balanced

It deserves a full mark, I really loved it

I'm totally speechless - IT'S A FUCKING MASTERPIECE IN TERMS OF EVERYTHING. LITERALLY A PERFECT EMBODIMENT OF DETECTIVE SERIES. Absolutely deserved 10/10 & must-have to watch.

I had to use every single one of my neurons in that convo between Motoko and Laughing Man. Watching it was a easy W imo. Loved everything about it.

Each time I rewatch this series I like it less. It gestures half-heartedly toward potentially interesting ideas without ever committing to fully integrating them into the story, most of the standalone episode plotlines are laughably undercooked, every character besides the tachikomas is utterly dull and unsympathetic, and the main storyline amounts to nothing more than some autist's grievance with a pharmaceutical company followed by a descent into bland shoot-outs driven by mundane political concerns. As an examination of mass-social phenomena with no clear origin, Paranoia Agent is far superior. As a thrilling sci-fi series imbued with daring sociopolitical concepts, Psycho-Pass is far superior. As an episodic series whose individual storylines feed into an underlying thematic bedrock that enriches the overarching narrative, Cowboy Bebop is far superior. And of course, it goes without saying that it doesn't come close to the 1995 movie in any respect.

To be clear, despite all these complaints, it isn't a bad show, and in certain episodes such as 11 and 15 it comes close to living up to the GITS name, but there's so much mediocrity weighing it down. Like why is it that in 9 hours of runtime, we don't get a single scene of detective work which is even a tenth as cool as the bit in the original film where they figure out that cloaked soldiers have infiltrated Section 9 by checking the floor pressure sensors? Why didn't we get a single action scene which used the concepts of the setting to do something unique? Why didn't any of the main cast have a single conversation that humanized them in any way, allowing you to feel even remotely invested when they get hunted down at the end? The original movie is 80 minutes long and delivers all of this and more in spades.

I will never understand why people rave about Kamiyama, he simply isn't one of the greats. If this series isn't proof enough of that then look no further than Eden of The East, which justifiably ended his career as a director of tentpole anime series.

You could simply say you are a GITS movie elitist and Oshii fanboy

Good job missing all the things what maskes the show great and the other stuff that are supposedly missing from the show according to your limited understanding

@JoeChip If you have something substantial to say in favor of the show I am open to hearing it and fully willing to be convinced that I am wrong. Just throwing out a couple of sentences of insults isn't really constructive though.

Thus that makes the end of the first season for Stand Alone Complex. Watching Togusa come to terms with the outcome of the section 9 case and nearly starting another laughing man event with his attempted assassination was wild. He truly is the heart of this tale! Also, it might not have been done directly by our heroes hands, but Yakushima was caught and i'm satisfied with that.

Things were looking dicey for a couple episodes there, tons of cliffhangers and close calls. But Aramaki had it all figured out, because there is only one squad fit to be called his section 9. I'm glad this show went for a happy ending. The characters are neat, the action is cool and I really enjoyed how the episodic episodes gave depth to the world and endeared us to the team. Also Motoko is one badass FMC, always staying cool and collected while remaining a few steps ahead of her opponents the majority of the time.

10/10 Ghost in the Shell SAC. 10/10!

@JoeChip I love when you see someone make an insane braindead comment and check their profile and they've watched like 10 million shows and have an average rating of 3.2/10. Like, dude, you can have a different hobby and possibly even get a life. Imagine dumping all that time into anime and fucking hating all of it and still wanting to watch more. And by his own standards he thinks this show is above average!

Anyway, I liked this show a lot more as an adult that could watch it in chunks instead of weekly (and dubbed). I still think that its a bit disconnected and leans a lot on bringing up questions and then not having a whole lot to say in regards to even potential answers. The plot itself is mostly condensed into a handful of episodes and is quite cool. The rest of the show asks questions about "what is consciousness?" "what does being alive mean in a world that can create fake life that is as capable as natural humans?" "what does it mean when weapons think?" "what does it mean when human weapons do their jobs without thinking?" and so on but the occasional answers it gives aren't as deep as the questions. For example, the Tachikoma get decommissioned for thinking and at the end they save Batou and the Major is like "hmmm, maybe we fucked up by killing them?" and that means smart weapons are good I guess?

And while I'm well aware that Psycho-Pass owes a huge debt to this series...I think Psycho-Pass is definitively much better. And I like Ghost in the Shell! But Psycho-Pass is a masterpiece anime and Ghost in the Shell has to settle for merely being iconic and massively influential.

It was just a prank, bro? Then 9/11 was hilarious. Also people should beef up the garage security and just volunteer for the vaccine instead of causing a trail of bodies. 6/10 - Ok wrap/set up.

I've rewatched the show after many years and still don't understand the critical acclaim.

It is bogged down by many mediocre stand-alone episodes that brush over the exploration of ideas presented in favor of something more digestible sprinkled with action. That isn't necessarily a bad thing if only the characters we follow would actually be engaging and would do detective work in any sort of interesting way, which the show fails at often. The Tachikomas were the saving grace of the cast.

The anime would have greatly benefitted if it had multiple smaller arcs exploring the ideas presented in the show and its main cast; instead, it broke up plot-relevant episodes with stand-alone ones, which was quite jarring.

It also lacks a visual identity. I don't expect it to be as atmospheric and full of symbolism as the movie, but it doesn't strike me as much of a cyberpunk setting, leaning too much into the cyber and not enough into the punk. It's too clean, too polished, and too bright. I understand trying something different from the movie, but give me something that makes it stand apart from other shows aside from futuristic technology. Kamiyama's directing is too safe, and he was clearly in over his head with this show. Also, Makoto's character model is different every other episode; how hard can it be to get it consistent?

It's a decent anime with a few standout episodes, but it lacks artistic merit.

You know, if you will post some edgy self-gratification with no real substantial criticism you should at least put effort to write the main character's name right, it simply makes it obvious you don't really know what you are talking about.

And GITS SAC is defined as post-cyberpunk, so just because it doesn't fit the cyberpunk mold in your head does not mean it's atmospherically weak or "Not Dark Enough for MUH EDGE" .

Last but not least, there is already a summarized version of the anime named Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The Laughing Man that focuses only on the main plot without breaking it with stand alone episodes, so your criticism of "it broke up plot-relevant episodes with stand-alone one" is completely pointless.

The show was really ahead of its time. The idea's are pretty well thought out and interesting especially now. Kind of amazing how much the idea's translate still to this day and how far AI has come.

I am very interested in how the next show that is in production will take, as it is said to be a different timeline. All for the better, as the ideas from this and s2, which I will watch have been gone over and the new show can start with a clean slate.

@Zoopiez

The new GITS daptation is not a different timelinebut an alternative version of the already existing universe aka manga version . And you ould just read the manga instead of waiting to be adapted.
