Had this spoiled a few months back, but even I hadn't, anyone could see this coming. But it's better that it happens now rather than later down the line. Ayame set up Taiki and Hina to be together, but instead unintentionally set up something that just needed to be done. Was low-key dreading the coming of this episode, but now having watched it, I think it was done quite well.

For Taiki, he's been a boy these past 24 episodes. In this episode, he became a man. You could tell as he got up from his seat; something was different about him, he was fully prepared to say what had to be said. It can be easy to get annoyed with a spineless main character, I know that's how I thought of Taiki all season- but I shouldn't have. Perhaps there wasn't much he could do in the situations he was put in, and he did the best with what he got. We wanted him to speak up and just give it to Chinatsu straight that he likes her, but that can be hard when maybe she didn't show any signs (that were clear to him at least) that she thought the same way. As for Hina, he dealt with her in a respectable manner as well, even after being taken aback on being put on the spot after she confessed to him for the first time. He didn't shoot her down immediately, which might've absolutely destroy her. He decided to take her up on her offer to simply wait until he could give her a definitive answer. Him waiting either shows he was just too scared to give an answer, or that he wanted to give a possible relationship with Hina a chance. Might just be the former reason, but I'd like to think it's a mix of both. Either way, from that point on he actually kept it really cool with Hina, still being a best friend to her, even with the knowledge of her feelings toward him that might make it awkward. And it definitely did get awkward at times, but Taiki did a relatively good job of not blowing it out of proportion, and keeping things cool.
Anyway, back to what's important: finally Taiki has stood his ground and told it straight to Hina's face that he has no feelings for her, and that those feelings are for Chinatsu. Taiki grew a backbone in that moment. That must've taken guts. Lover or not, Hina was like his best friend; telling what he told her would jeopardize the friendship that they had, and he knew that. But he knew that the charades had to stop, that it was not good for him, and it was not good for Hina. He recognized his feelings fully and put them in order, and did what was best for them all. Respect. Any dislike I had for Taiki is gone.

As for Hina, well, I didn't think of it like this at first, but I get it now. She knows Taiki well, and probably knew deep down that those feelings for Chinatsu were not going anywhere. MAYBE she would've succeed in getting Taiki to develop some feelings for her, but those feelings would never be as strong as those for his first love Chinatsu. She knew that Taiki's rejection of her was inevitable. So what's the next best thing? That is to entertain the idea that they COULD be together, and to stretch it for as long as possible. She would confess to Taiki despite knowing his feelings for Chinatsu (some would argue that that is toxic, obviously it's clear as to why, but as long as Taiki himself hadn't declared those feelings to Chinatsu, I would argue that it is NOT toxic), and enjoy that period of time before he rejects her and confesses to Chinatsu; because once Taiki does that, it is done, it is over. So yes it's almost as if she's fooling herself, living in a twilight zone, but sometimes ignorance is bliss. This dream state she was in would be better than after Taiki officially rejects her. She she tells him right away to take his time, that she "doesn't need an answer right away". Partly for the hope that Taiki might actually come to like her, but I'd say mostly just to prolong the inevitable for longer. That hurts. Could be cheap writing, could be masterful writing. Either way, it got me feeling for an anime character, so credit where credit is due.
Kinda shrugged it off when she said it to Ayame, but I guess that's what she meant when she said that "it's fun to have a crush on Taiki". Which, is really sad; she knows ultimately she can't be with him, so she enjoys these few fleeting moments where there is but merely the POSSIBILITY that they could be together.
F*ck man, justice for Hina. She didn't have to get together with Taiki specifically, it's just hard to see a character like her be sad. Wasn't expecting chills from her rejection, but chills I got. That somber song quietly playing in the background as she loses her cool and becomes more and more desperate, all the while Taiki continues to firmly reject her, being as strong and stoic as he can on the outside, but no doubt fighting a major battle on the inside thinking that he may be losing a friend.

Phewwww. Well on to the last episode, the aftermath, the fallout. Taiki had just grown a pair of steel balls so I'm guessing he's finally going to confess to Chinatsu in the next episode. Don't really know how Chinatsu will respond though, she seems to still be finding herself as well and realizing her feelings for Taiki. Whatever, I just wanna know how Hina will deal with all this moving forward. Will she now be distant, no longer on speaking terms with Taiki, or will they remain friends as before despite it all, or somewhere in between? Whatever it is, hope that they close off the season in a satisfactory way.
