Yes, in a way they are. Good point. While everyone can enjoy battle shounen anime, it seems that, if we go by stereotypes, this genre can be called "soap opera for dudes".

This isn't a bad analogy if you introducing someone to the genre, but it isn't the same thing either

Battle shonen are more akin to superhero movies than soap operas.

No, that would be the WWF/WWE.

Battle Shounen is more akin to superhero movies/tv.

I was thinking about this post yesterday when I finished Kamen Rider Geats, now my second favourite serial Kamen Rider of all times with KR Kiva being the first and Faiz the third, the anniversary movie of the latter being the best superhero live action movie of the last thirty years with the Avataro Sentai Donbrothers one. Yes, Battle Shounens are Soap Operas for boys, like Tokusatsu shows should be soap operas for boys, at least soap operas that provide action and it's not just about the romantic/drama side. The greatest tokusatsu writer of all times Toshiki Inoue and his second in command Yuya Takahashi have made an art from it. Even if, TBH, Kamen Rider Black was also a soap opera kind of thing, with the whole thing about the main rider being forced to neverending fight his own brother like in Taigas. Very dramatic, very powerful. We men like cheap, romantic garbage like anybody. if a friggin' Dragon Ball animator like Yuya (animator of shows I couldn't care less to watch, no offense to him intended) shows it, it's true period.

They are like telenovelas for guys.
@tchitchouan unfortunately I've stopped watching the show with Erika Yazawa because again, Iguchi turned that show in a J-Drama where Erika did very few stuff and there was no action, yet I've literally cUmmed in my pants while watching Geats because Yuya, like his inspiration/source Toshiki Inoue, has understood that soap operas and even J-Drama are an excellent addition when mixed with fighting and the J-Drama/soap opera part doesn't take over completely the action part. What the hell happened to Noboru that he got convinced he wanted to make fully-blown J-Dramas? also, I had no idea the guy who made Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 1997 Taiga ended working with Noboru, I knew he worked in KR Ghost because I've read his credits on wikipedia but I had no idea he had any involvement with Noboru to begin with.

@DigiCat My personal interests? Sewing, art, cooking and baking, music (I can play the violin and piano), home design, and I like video games and anime. I also like skating.

I like a variety of anime and manga, but I lean more Shoujo. I like a variety of shows, but the shows I prefer are the ones that men (specifically white) like to call DEI (I love diverse shows).
@LuxuriousHeart I've a white man, I never used that word in my entire life. And I didn't flinch an eye when I saw a black girl in Attakku no. 1 ln the couple of episodes dedicated to her like i didn't do it when I saw black, american men in the Space Sheriffs, in the Sentais (Abaranger) and in the Kamen Riders (Geats). The only thing I don't understand is why somebody in the star and stripes kindgom felt the need to remake such shows with american actors instead of the japanese ones of the origins if already in the originals there's plenty of american/canadian actors, and nobody ever had any problem with them to begin with. Hell, in Geats the black actor turns into a friggin' Kamen Rider for a couple of seconds, Geats has been well received in Japan. And the japanese are not particularly friendly with Black people to begin with. At least, I understand why they did it (the american obsession to always be at the control of everything like the center of the universe the United States isn't), but it makes no sense whatsoever the same from a "pretended" universalistic society of my ass like the american one. If people ends disliking the United States and its inhabitants, don't look any further than this laughable controlling and center of the universe syndrome.
As a side note, the only real problem with black people for me is when it comes to hentai fanart on Pixiv, but only because I don't have that color of skin (see, in sex skin is very important) and I don't understand the shitload of black men in art in which a generic non-black male viewer is supposed to identify (the ratio of black people in Japan is very small). But same goes for the horrible fatsos or old men, those are far worst than black ones.
For women, instead, the problem is when they use them as an advertiment tool to discard as soon as possible. See Akiko Inoue and the whole mumbo-jumbo of her writing No. 1 Gozyuger as the main writer because a woman hurr durr, she was left at the very end tail of Kamen Rider Gotchard because they didn't trust her, result: No. 1 Gozyuger is tanking hard because she's clearly not into the series like the advertisement of No. 1 Gozyuger made her. provided being a woman doesn't make you good at writing to begin with (coff coff Yasuzo Kobayashi and her vomit coff coff)

@ProudElitist Who cares about who is in hentai? It's hentai. There's a diverse range to appeal to everyone. There's even ones where they show no one and the 'guy' is transparent or translucent, because that makes it easier to focus on the girl and self project onto the guy.

Most people dislike bad works. I dislike The Open House. I find it bad. Looking at the low rating on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, most people agree. The difference is, they won't blame the movie being bad on the main character being a white guy. They'll just simply talk about the bad plot, ending, and writing. That isn't the case when it's a work with a person of color or a woman. The Open House is a bad movie. Though if you replaced main character with a women or person of color, then suddenly their gender and/or race will be the reason that the movie flopped, and not the bad writing and plot.

@LuxuriousHeart I care because I'm supposed to identify, and I can't identify with a person with black skin with me having a different skin of colour. Yet, I have no idea why on Pixiv there's millions of this thing with a black person in it, like there's million of shit with fatsos and old men (UUUUUGH). Well, the thing you're saying they apply it to western media mostly. I have solved the problem by watching 98% of the time japanese media (not just animes, everything) and you can't apply it to medias where almost everybody is japanese, except the sparse american that might appear in it that is. Of both black and white skin. And nobody cares one bit when both of these are on the screen. Again, in Geats (by all accounts, my second favourite Rider after Kiva as of now) nobody cares of the black american guy who henshins and becomes a Kamen Rider for a couple of seconds like nobody cares/finds problematic the two women being Kamen Riders. The only time I remember being truly concerned with the appareance of a non-japanese person of white skin (an american presented as an american in the movie) was in Yoru No Nagare from 1960, and the reason being that is was the symptom of the movie trying to be as american as possible the way the mediocre Blue Sky Maiden by Yasuzo Masamura was. In other cases like Chinmoku the two americans were problematic not because of their race but because they sucked ass as actors, which is the reason why they never made anything else outside that awful movie.

@LuxuriousHeart Oh yeah right I didn't flinch an eye even when I saw a black guy in the 1997 Taiga about Toyotomi Hideyoshi, even if it was like zero accurate (Taigas are not accurate to story anyway). I flinched the eye during the scene that prompted me to stop the Ieyasu Taiga from 1983, the one where a lady randomly kills Akechi Mitsuhide during the Honno-Ji incident (Mitsuhide who didn't die at that point in history), but the problem wasn't the lady in herself, the problem was the writer who was an hack, hack who in previous episodes tried so desperately to prove that Ieyasu was not personally involved in the killing of his own family that it went beyond laughable. Worst than the Hideyoshi Taiga trying to prove that he didn't want his sister to marry Ieyasu and he had no involvement whatsoever (which he hadn't already, historically speaking) with the suicide of his sister's lover. I still have no idea how in the friggin' hell the Ieyasu Taiga writer (a woman, just to prove women are not good at writing because of their gender) had involvement of any kind in the beautiful 1989 Toei animated movie about the little mermaid, at least if internet sources are reliable about her involvement in that animated gem of a movie.

Sure, why not. If you love'em you love 'em and it doesn't matter if they're formulaic or predictable as long as you love the underlying formula and tropes. It's the genre I most reliably enjoy and almost always can count of having a good time with. I guess Soap Operas fill that role for other people so I can understand the comparison. But obviously the dramatic structure and character tropes are very different, otherwise they would be enjoyed by the same people. Also I probably wouldn't fixate on gender being the decisive element making one enjoy one or the other. I can agree with the spirit of the comparison though.
I probably regret this post by now.
