If you're a horror fan you're used to crazy and inventive ideas being executed poorly in some fashion (in live action, usually from so-so acting from the B-movie-tier 30-somethings playing high schoolers and poor special effects like bad practical back in the day or bad CGI nowadays - here in Uzumaki mainly from rushed pacing and some wonky and botched animation frames). But considering how much the world of anime has become such an utter desert for horror in recent years, I'd rather have even more "bad" or extremely flawed horror than I Was Reincarnated as the Third Duke's Nephew's Pastry's Chef's Toenail Clipping. |

| Sad to see the unsung pearl of last season, one of the few decent crime and slightly "messed up" romance anime which stood out in recent times, Raise wa Tanin ga Ii, fall right out of the gate, but that's along with around half the nominees due to the nature of the competition and this tournament, and I'm mildly surprised by and can take solace in the fact that it was only by one vote against one of the established battle shounen behemoths. | @WatchTillTandava The biggest flaw of the Uzumaki anime was the infamous quality drop after episode 1. I understand why people were disappointed, especially those who hoped for an artsy adaptation of that cosmic horror masterpiece. But as an adaptation of the source material, it was surprisingly faithful. Those who disagree either romanticize the manga or have forgotten how truly bizarre it is. Some scenes are almost direct translations of panels, so it was as faithful as it could be, even if there were some minor omittments done on the way. I also emphasized it in review. You might read it, if you want. The story itself, while intriguing, was flawed, both in the manga and the anime. Don't get me wrong, Uzumaki has interesting cosmic horror elements and unique ideas, but it also veers into the absurd, making it hard to take seriously at times. It can't be fixed without changing the whole story's narrative. I know that's something common in Junji Ito's works, but not every person might like it. That's what I meant when I called it "truly an anime of all time". :P But yes, I agree that even with all those flaws, it was refreshing to see a new horror anime getting released. I prefer half-baked horror anime with creative ideas (no doubt that Uzumaki in both formats, I mean anime and manga, has a lot of creativity, haha) to generic slop that gets released every year. It's just... It's a shame that Uzumaki couldn't have lived up to its potential as an animated miniseries, and that it ended up as one of those "half-baked horror shows". With the attention to details, direction and art from the first episode, we could've gotten a polished, artsy cosmic horror adapting one of the most famous horror manga. |
