The only way i could explain it is if an uncensored version was incorrectly labelled censored version. I am quite annoyed i cant find anyone else pointing this out but i could have sworn i had seen minor differences between a few, unfortunately i dont know how to find them again since some sites shut down. Regardless crunchyroll used a very censored version with cut audio, cut scenes, and heavy fog while the uncensored has different subtitles so it was done by someone else. Im not sure if Crunchyroll later had the uncensored because i cant check what they currently have but originally at least it was oddly censored

@traed Well you have absolutely no proof that there's a censored version different from Crunchyroll's, so how do I know you're telling the truth about it? You seem to be under the impression that the Japanese companies can't censor their own products for overseas distribution or that Crunchyroll has say in which version they get. You remind me of those people who complain about Yugioh cards being censored in Korea & the West & blame Konami of America for it, even though it's Konami of Japan that does the censorship. |

If you think it was worse in the past, you need to listen to less culture war people. The 4kids dub of OP is comical in what they censored. If we are even just talking about Japan itself, or the production, recent ecchi have been more uncensored than ecchi in the past. People do downplay how fanservice crazy old anime was, however, it still is pretty tame compared to like Interspecies Reviewers. Even if you want to blame the West or whatever, a series like Cyberpunk Edgerunners, a Western produced show is more uncensored than pretty much almost every TV anime out there. You have to go back to 80s/90s OVAs to find a similar equivalent.
@BilboBaggins365 Comparing apples to oranges. If you're talking only dubs then it was worse in past. But raws and subs the censorship got worse. |

@animegamer245 Because why would I? There is no motivation. Im not 100% anymore since it has been over a year so i cant be sure if i made a mistake in observation or if there is really three versions and only i noticed somehow. Id have to find it again to be able show you and im a bit busy and my internet sucks so unfortunately i cant right now. |

@traed In what context? Like how many TV anime were out there in the 80s like Made in Abyss? I mean I am watching YuYu Hakusho, and even with its dumb fanservice gags, something like Chainsaw Man is more graphic than this, same with Dragon Ball too. This is so overblown. If anything, with streaming it's likely censorship is going to decrease, due to less reliance on TV stations. |

@traed The motivation is that you want to paint a narrative that Crunchyroll is censoring content, even though they have no reason to, why else would you mistakenly believe there are 2 censored versions, when normally the IP owners would only make one. Also, you're not that busy seeing as you have time to talk in the forums & having bad internet doesn't mean you can't provide links. You just don't want to go looking for it because you'll end up looking stupid if you find out that the mystical less censored version didn't actually exist after how much you doubled down on it. |

@traed Well then what era do you want to compare it too? Even 2000s ecchi shows, that I watched a few episodes of like DearS, still felt tamer than the more extreme ecchi works of modern anime. Sure, we get less of them, however, the content is still more close to hentai than the soft core gag fest, I remember in older ecchi. Like the OP didn't give a decade either. Anyone who claims it is worse today is actively gaslighting themselves. Up until the mid to late 2000s, a lot of Japanese shows that came to English speaking countries had to be heavily edited to air on TV. 4Kids is probably the most infamous licensor from this era, as their method of localization was to try and strip most of the Japanese culture from the shows, weapons, LGBT content, violence, references to real world religions, and drug/alcohol use in order to not only meet strict broadcast requirements for kids TV in the US, but to also appease to Conservative parents who would get upset about these things being in the cartoons their kids watch. 4Kids method of dubbing wasn't just done by them, as Saban, Dic, Cloverway, Nelvana, and early FUNimation shows also did this to varying extents, but most of the others mentioned either stopped distributing Japanese anime, shut down, switched to doing only uncut dubs, or only really handled one franchise. Saban stopped doing anime dubs in 2001 and doesn't exist anymore, DiC stopped in 2004 and was doesn't exist anymore, Cloverway only ever did 2 seasons of Sailor Moon in English, Nelvana's last English dub was Bakugan Legends in 2023 and they don't handle Beyblade or Bakugan anymore, and FUNimation did always offer uncut versions of shows once they started doing dubbing in house, but they stopped doing edited dubs altogether in the late 2000s with One Piece. FUNimation also no longer exists having been absorbed into the Crunchyroll monopoly. Even 4Kids, the most infamous of studios when it comes to edited dubs shut down 12 years ago and all that remains of them is Konami Cross Media, who exclusively handles the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise.
In the modern era it is very rare to find dubs that actively cut or edit footage from the original Japanese versions. Some of the few shows that I can think of that do are Pokémon, Beyblade, and Yu-Gi-Oh, all of which are franchises that are marketed towards children under the age of 12 here in the US. Even with these shows, the edits are becoming less intrusive and major than before. Pokémon especially only really gets rid of instances of Japanese text, changes the character names for consistency with the games and to translate over the puns, and changes the music due to licensing. When a lot of people complain about censorship these days, it mostly seems to be with ecchi shows. These people fail to realize that streaming services like Crunchyroll license the TV versions of these shows and air them week to week alongside Japan. Most ecchi shows are edited down in Japan on TV broadcast not only to meet Broadcast standards, but to sell the viewer the Blu Rays later down the road where broadcast standards wont get in the way of things like nudity as much. There are some non-ecchi shows that air edited on TV before releasing uncensored on Blu Ray with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure being the most notable example, but that is due to extreme gore and depictions of underage smoking. One should not hold it against a licensor for licensing the TV version while the show airs on TV since these Blu Ray versions that release uncensored do take time to make as they also tend to have some animation corrections. However shows like Jojo and ecchi titles aren't the majority of Japanese anime and are more niche cases and pretty much everything else releases unedited pretty much everywhere throughout the world. Licensors heavily editing dubs has also just fallen out of practice so it is just nowhere near what the market was like just 12 years ago

@LSSJ_Gaming Yeah!! This is sooooooo true!!! Also, that removal of Japanese culture back then reminds me of when they take Japanese food and call it hamburgers and stuff ;_; Or when they take Japanese characters and turn them into white characters named Kasey and stuff. Completely unrelated but what the heck did I just find? https://www.4kidsentertainmentinc.com/ It's a blast from the past! 😳 |

Ecchi is just a kind of Japanese sex comedy not all of them are focused on actual sexual aspects they just use sexual scenarios for jokes. Censorship would be if an anime removed content from the manga for graphicness, or if the writer or director or character designer had to make changes to conform to law or company policy or something. If you include beyond that, it does get harder to compare because there is different trends over time so id think it would merit a question of it's own on what era of anime is most graphic in violence, profanity, nudity, sexual content, and things considered taboo to some people. But even that might be hard to determine because way more anime is made these days than the past so then it would be a question of do single examples count or do you have to find a percentage of what has certain content. Id admit the question is kind of open ended and hard to answer from the different ways it can be interpreted. At this point i just think you're trolling. No one would think im stupid for just making an observation even if i was mistaken since it would be a pretty simple thing. Posting here doesnt take that much effort compared to tracking down specific versions of a show when they dont even get labelled properly where they came from. I basically was signaling to you i may come back later letting you know if i find it and now youre trying to act aggressive for no reason. And for whatever reason you even deny crunchyroll had a censored version at all which is widely known so i have no idea why youd do that.

traed said: Tameness isn't really always censorship Well what is the OP asking? Is censorship god rays? Is it the uniform changes in Re Zero? When we are talking about broad strokes, to me whether a medium is heavily censored is dependent not on specific cases, rather it's dependent on what the overall medium can show. Fact is, there are a lot of shows coming out today, readily available on many platforms that are more graphic with its content than many shows in the past. That displays a libertine attitude to the content they feel they can show. Just because a streaming platform puts up a censored version for any number of reasons (show needs BD revenue, that is the only version they got/rights issues, or yeah they or Japan felt the West couldn't handle it) is irrelevant. Frankly, it's kinda hard for me to say something is censored if you still can easily get uncensored versions of it. True censorship is when things are banned or gotten rid of with little access to get an alternative. Censorship would be if an anime removed content from the manga for graphicness This isn't a new thing though? Manga being more graphic has largely been true. Again, you have to show that manga adaptions across multiple decades have had some new trend. I don't see it. Ecchi is just a kind of Japanese sex comedy not all of them are focused on actual sexual aspects they just use sexual scenarios for jokes While true, and why I don't like "ecchi" despite enjoy my perv content for that reason, it's not like we still don't see it in the form of jokes today. I just think it tends to be a bit more in your face, when you do actually see it. There are exceptions though. |
