Open end for viewer's interpretation. I would like to believe Johan recovered and started a new life (the Monster disappeared) and I'm happy that Tenma was proven innocent.

What a strange and unusual series. The appeal was the story here. Complex, unpredictable at many times, and deep.
Last episode felt a bit like too much happened and was skipped over, but I guess it's as good of an ending as any.
Although the character designs were odd, the writing made up for it quite a bit. This doesn't "feel" like anime, but more like a crime drama. It managed to create its own reality, too. Not bad.

Having recently completed this series, I will admit that it is well-written. But it feels too much like life action, not anime. It was nothing like what I expected though. This turned out to be a psychological thriller on a high level.

This last episode was a bit of a jump and as such, confusing. But I am glad to see that my hunch about Inspector Lunge being a good man with solid judgement turned out correct. Seeing him admit his error and owning up to it improved my impression of him all the more. He was one of the few cops not on the take with the corruption.

Johan's disappearance at the end leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Seems like a lot happened in this episode, almost too much to cover in the time alloted.
Overall, excellent series, even if the character designs were "meh".

I realise that I don't actually know how to describe a masterpiece with words.
Definitely my favourite anime ending.
Monster remained a true mystery anime even after the ending.

74 episodes and I never understood the point of the mother dressing little Johan as a girl.

Anyways, nothing much to say here. Standard epilogue episode featuring an ambiguous and slightly frustrating final scene. Of course Johan survived another shot in the head and now it seems he can also give you hallucinations in first person all of a sudden. Tenma looked quite shocked tho, not gonna lie. Now that makes me wonder if he will be able to sleep well at night after this episode. Considering the decisions he has made throughout this pointless journey and stuff.

So... well. That was Monster for me. Another highly acclaimed show that ends up in disappointment. A real shame considering it has some truly fascinating characters (Grimmer, Lunge, Vardemann and Eva), an excellent sense of atmosphere and some quite immersive OST tracks.
Not gonna lie, the execution of the story was incredibly mediocre. There was an absurd amount of plot conveniences, countless moments where the plot armour of some characters really hit hard and several plot-points that were never explained. Not to mention that Johan's almost divine exístanse was so hyped up it got ridiculous within the first third of the show and though I was indifferent towards Tenma at first, I gotta say this dude really got on my nerves during certain moments after the Schuwald arc. Especially during this last couple of episodes.

But seriously tho... 74 episodes of somewhat promising buildup and we got this tasteless resolution instead? Man, talk about dissatisfaction. Maybe the author was the true Monster all along...

3,5/10 -> 4/10 - So... did Johan escape or did he jump out the window to his death? Personally, I think he heard Tenma talking about his mother being alive and about the fact of her knowing his real name so I gotta assume he escaped in order to go find her.
And history repeats itself again...

I wasn’t expecting this ending overall I really enjoyed watching this the things that the characters went through and the people that they meet along the way were all interesting each person had their own story and problems and it made me enjoy and appreciate watching this series

This one really didn't do it for me. Maybe ending it at Ep 73 would have been better. Ep 74 gets a 4/10.

Such a happy ending for all characters, it's almost insulting. No trauma, no PTSD, nothing. Our cast witnessed one of the most horrendous massacres in recent times and...that's it. They just go on living their best lives. Wahey!

Overall a good series which sadly dragged from time to time and just had to nail one more goddamn time what a good lad "Dokta Temna" is.
Also if I have to experience one more "gunshot followed by blackout" scene I am gonna scream, I swear. So many copout deaths, it's insane.
Speaking of copout death: Lunge should have been shot by Roberto at the end, not "knocked out". As if Roberto had had the strength (and patience) left to do that when shooting someone from behind would have been so much easier, give me a break.

I really dislike how the final arc gets hyped up with this insane plan to eradicate a town of several thousands with like five dudes and some distributed weapons and then it just peters out with a drunk dude blowing Johann's brains out. Kind of a fitting end, but him surviving two shots to the head is laughable. Bonaparta also gets yoinked out of the picture as fast as he was introduced, more fleshing out would have been good. Or him surviving the entire ordeal. Or getting shot by Johann.
Capek just got dabbed on by his own men, which begs the question whom they're truly loyal to. They just kill their boss and fuck off. Cool.
Same with Johann shooting that bloke who made the "really good tea". No idea who he was but he gets introduced as someone who killed for Johann, was seemingly important and then he just..dies. Noice.

Introducing the mother in the final episode also felt completely unnecessary and like an asspull. As if Temna couldn't have done that earlier. Quite the afterthought and it adds nothing.

Johann of course survives and is off - and if the kinda sequel is to be believed, he goes on to live a normal, happy life because Temna cured him of his nihilism.
Woohoo! All those people who died, all those poor innocent lives that were vanquished because Johann was misused and his mommy didn't love him - for nothing. Like pissing on someone's grave.

Still enjoyed the ride but in the end it feels like many characters didn't really evolve (Anna) all that much from the beginning and the final episode just feels way too happy and contrived in my book. Expected more, honestly. Why everyone hypes up Johann, who barely gets two episode's worth of screentime, is also beyond me. Guess because he is so super duper mysterious, edgy and seemingly omnipotent, as well as fucking kawaii.

7/10, Inspector Lunge hard carried my enjoyment of this series because honestly, as honourable as Dr. Temna is, he is equally as dull.

im glad the characters got a happy ending really, but it seems like more of an ending to a slice of life than a psychological drama. maybe i didnt understand much of the mystery/clues/hints etc that led up to the final few episodes, but to me it was real boring and didnt live up to its almost 9/10 mal rating. im kind of pissed off i spent so much time on this show, i believe the story could have been summed up in less than 74 episodes.

Glad to see every character lived happily after ever. But god, the last scene, the empty bed metaphor for the monster is back will haunt me for weeks. I prefer letting Johan dies for good then the ending will be more entirety but this is far more than my imagination

I have finally finished Monster and this show is truly a Masterpiece with the best writing I have ever watched but I have a few questions and wondering if anyone could help me out?

1. Why did Johan take Anna memories and act as though they were his? Was it because they were twins and as one?

2. Who was the real Monster in the ending? Was it the Mother? The hospital scene at the very end implied that she was.

3. What was Johan and Anna real name?

4. What was Johan real end goal to everything?

5. Why was Johan dressed as his sister when they were kids?

6. What was the purpose of the doomsday? Why did Johan want Teanma to see it and wasn't his plan suicide plan for Teanma to kill him so why was the drunk Dad?

This is a late answer but if you still interested to understand the show well just google a complete explanation for the anime. I'll answer some of these questions:

3/ Their names have not been revealed (I didn't care to know their real names as I actually loved their current ones "Johan and Anna").

5/ The reason they both were dress like girls was that there mother did it. She wanted for people to think she only had one kid so she only took one out at a time. Also that's why the guy next door told Tenma that there was only one child.

This was such a journey. I dropped this show a couple times because of the slow pacing in the beginning but it made me appreciate slow burns. The character developments were amazing to see and I'm definitely going to be watching some "Monster Explained" videos after finishing this series up. Glad to see Dieter having a loving home at the end. The ambiguity at the end with Johan really keeps the show's mystery/thriller genre and I actually don't mind it. It would be weird if Johan was normal and happy with everyone lol.

Edit: I just read somewhere that either Johan was never really there and Tenma just hallucinated that last moment because Johan actually died!? Or Johan actually fled, ahhh open to interpretation!! too good, it's really up to the viewer. not a bad ending, really keeps the show's ambience.

A happy ending. I still don't know who or what Johan even is and the forced ambiguity just makes him look more pretentious. "Who is the real monster?" is a pretty good open ended question though. That made this at least somewhat satisfying.

Still an experience I never want to put myself through again

The execution was godly throughout, but it shined brighter than ever in the finale.
The characters, the character development, Grimmer-san, Dr. Tenma, Johan, Johan's "the only thing people are equal in, is death" ideology, Dieter, Anna, Lunge! Everything. Just... everything. Everything about this anime is my favourite thing.

Lovely. Legendary. Absolutely flawless. Nothing'll ever compare. Holy. Holy fucking crap.

That ending, too. It has come full circle... holy crap... full circle. Full stop.

Farewell, Monster.

I have a great time watching Monster. the story was excellent and I like the way it doesn't just tell from the protagonist's point of view.
the characters we met through the journey of Tenma were not just some random characters they feel like people just like the main characters of this anime.
Omg, the villain of this story. Johan really lives up to his reputation, I heard that he is the best antagonist ever in anime but now days fans most of the time just praise their favorite anime too high anyway, and now after finished watching Monster I can now say that Johan is the best antagonist ever in anime.
He is the exact opposite of Tenma.
Tenma save lives and Johan kills but not for fun or power, for him, human life itself doesn't mean anything and he feels the same for himself.
Over all I love Monster.

Very much so agree. 7/10 for the reasons listed above. It just didn't feel fulfilling and right for the ending of this show. There was also a ton of paths I thought the show was gonna take and now in hindsight really wish It had taken.

I've never seen a show like this one. the answers to mysteries weren't spoon-fed, you felt like you were solving the mystery throughout too.
I knew early in the series that it was a 10. But, it's crazy b/c my first attempt watching I only got to ep. 2. Tried again and couldn't stop watching.
In the end Tenma could only save lives, it's only right that he didn't shoot Johan. Ofc everyone has their opinions though.

Did Johan died or is he still alive ? Was the last scene real ? If he is alive, did he found his identity ? Is he no longer a monster ? What will he do now ?

There are a lot of questions that comes to mind because ending was very open.

Overall, this series was so great. 9.5/10.

i can never express how i feel about this anime but its one of those ones which are close to perfection. The way it portrays its dark themes with real world philosophies and different perspectives of life is just amazing. Johan is arguably one of the best villains and his story relating to every single stage of life is just great. It was a wonderful ride.

this took me a long time to finish i started in feb and got to around 20 eps, recently i started again deciding to watch in dub and was binge-watching. it definitely gets way better with some more actions in parts. I agree that this is one of the best psychological anime with one of the best antagonists, the side characters were also great (grimmer, lunge, the psychologist...) . the starting was rough but if you managed to get through that its worth it!

Brilliant show.

Love how it wrapped up every single character's storyline, man I can't even speak right about anything in particular right now, I'm kinda speechless.

Happy ending for everyone is not something I expected but I can't complain either, they deserve it.

Johan suddenly waking up scared me. And the last reveal he gave was pretty ominous too. We will never know which child their mother wanted to save. Poor kids man.

But then it turns out Tenma probably imagined that whole conversation?

Gotta say I'm pissed off how nobody from the police is watching Johan considering he is one of the most infamous serial killers in the world. No wonder he... escaped? Right?

My god it is such a relief seeing that Tenma's name is finally cleared. HE IS INNOCENT

I'm gonna have to read a few articles and opinions about the ending, but this series was wonderful nonetheless. Bravo Urasawa. Time to check out 20th Century Boys!

It's over.
Maybe the best anime I ever watched.
Well I have QUESTIONS. But maybe I'll get answers soon.

What's the real name? Of Johan? And of Anna?
Why did Tenma really saved Johan from death again? And what's the end of the end? So I mean where did Johan escaped? Did he really escaped or did he commit suicide?

All in all I have to say now that this Anime is truly a masterpiece.
There is nothing wrong with that.
So maybe I will watch another anime which will catch me like this one. But I doubt that to be honest. This anime was everything. Nerve wracking. Exciting. Beautiful. Sad. Emotionally down in it's depths. Rarely funny. And of course a pleasure to watch. For me now: The absolute crown of all Anime.

finally at the end. ngl didn't expected everything to come to circle with johan being shot in the end, dr. tenma saving him yet again, and johan escaping again. but he was in a police hospital how could they allow the windows to be open??? actually crazy. also don't know if johan went out to kill like he used to so it's all a cycle but as other comments have said he doesn't have a reason anymore bc tenma proved that there is good in people or something i don't really get it i don't know what johan will do being a wanted man. i like to believe tenma told johan the name his mother gave him. the scene where johan wakes up and talks to tenma... scared me lmao i feel like it's real? and when johan finished talking tenma was still in a trance of panic and then johan pretended to be in a coma again right before tenma went back to reality. because how could tenma have known that story of his mother possibly confusing the twins, as johan said she mighted saved him or maybe became confused about two of them? unless the mother told tenma but i feel like the confusion part is not something the mother would say, or if she did tell tenma, it would've been clear who she wanted to send away or it would've been certain if she was confused or not. crazy story. irrelevant to the story but i really like johan's wavy hair when it was raining and when he was at the hospital LMAO anyway. really glad tenma eva nina and dieter are living normal lives now. even though it's hard to forget the past and all the trauma i hope they live happy lives. this was a very long series and the stories were very very stretched out and detailed with many many additional (can't even say side with all the focus and time on them) characters thaf it was kinda tiring sometimes but still pretty good story. great show. but edit: im glad tenma didn't need to become a murderer in the end but the fact that he spent months and months of training to kill johan and trying to find johan and the TWO TIMES he saw johan and had the chance of killing him (in the library and the raining scene) HE JUST STOOD THERE. LIKE I THOUGHT YOU WENT THERE TO KILL HIM BUT YOU'RE JUST GONNA STARE AT HIM AND LET HIM WALK LMAO??? talking more about the library scene here. understood why he shouldn't have been shot there the series couldn't have ended just like that but really hated how nina and tenma just kept shouting DONT SHOOT. bruh then who's gonna shoot? literally no one you just stare and let him walk when you went there with the mission of killing johan sigh. anyway that's it 8/10 for those annoying things. also hated that how small boy didn't run after tenma told him to run away TWICE. but understood he needed to be there for the drunkard father to shoot johan. still annoying.

So this is the end. Sooner than I thought.

Nice to see everyone getting on their lives.

We're finally seen the twins' mom. Sadly, she was forced go give out one of the kids because they were experiment. Not sure if she actually tried to let go of Johan or just tried to pick a child at random, not really wanting to give away either of them?

If the kids were around 10 in the 1986 (where the series started), it means this experiment and following Red Rose Mansion/Kinderheim 511 took place in late 70's... Thought the nazis were long gone history by then.

Johan dissapears from the hospital bed. Yep, here we go again...
