| A friendly reminder that Kotone (Rin's school friend in Zero) died in the original novel. Rin's adventure had a bad end. In the first draft, I unthinkingly named her "Satsuki" and ended up getting punished by the original author. I had totally forgotten that Satsuki was Sacchin's real name – or rather, I had forgotten that Sacchin even had a real name at all! To all the Yumizuka Satsuki fans around the world, I humbly beg your forgiveness. Kinoko: "Urobuchi… please, a little consideration…" Gen: "But… without a 'Satsuki', suffering isn't moe!" |

The fact that people take Kiritsugu seriously and think he is some badass mage should make that clear. It came way closer to capturing what's so good about it's source material. This is the mark of a good adaptation. Faithfulness doesn't mean jack if they can't do that. Anime UBW Shirou is still better than anyone in Zero, the fights have more thematic context and everything makes more sense. Shirou isnt sleeping with some female friend,except Rin, with no explanation. Rin's background isnt reduced to one line.(coughLancelotcough). I dont know what you mean with "so good about the source material" when Zero anime took dumb Zero Saber and made her even dumber, Kiritsugu less emo, Rider more whitewashed, Rin is a 7 yo messiah that can destroy crafts made by Caster Servants, Sakura's situation is better(relatively), Saber and Lancelot's whole deal is removed, fight's end is a mess, Zouken and Kirei scene is just fanservice with all foreshadowing for the end removed... So what exactly is so good about it adaptation wise? To me any problems UBW has that arent tied to lack of Fate route are minor compared to those. |

And the removal of stuff near the end overall hurts it for sure. However, the overall package manages to deliver the themes and atmosphere through. Zero is meant to be viewed through the lenses of F/SN. People who haven't experienced all of F/SN will never truly get what the show (and the LN) were trying to get across. This isn't the fault of the adaptation, this the fault of the people who started with the wrong installment and interpreted shit completely the wrong way. |
