Since I'm still less than 100 completed, not really.

It can be useful if I'm looking for recommendations but I watch a little bit of everything and like different things for different reasons, which usually results in most everyone having some kind of positive affinity to me but nothing close enough to 100% to call reliable. Basically I cast a wide net while others are fishing for some specific thing and it seems to screw up the system. I get lots of 20-30% but nothing much higher.

i do wonder how the affinity is calculated. i noticed in one of my shared lists with someone, after i added two animes and scored it the same as they did, our affinity actually went down instead of up. that confused me.

I think it is a tacky concept from the get go because it immediately assumes that you are using MAL's scoring system and not your own. Also how does it calculate accurately when you may have different scores but end up with high affinity because a few are close enough?

In my opinion I don't trust this feature one bit. I think it is even less accurate than MAL's automated recommendations. What do you think?

Not saying that it's not a tacky concept, but while "assumes that you are using MAL's scoring system and not your own" is true, there's a pretty strong correlation between the higher rating a person gives to a show, either the more the person likes the show or thinks the show is good.

And MAL affinity takes the individual user's score relative to their own ratings. For example, a 7 seems like a decent score, but if that user's average is like 9.00, 7 is terrible and basically equivalent to like 1 probably for a user who has an average of 5.00-6.00.

So anyway, personally I think it's a fun thing to look at for a few seconds.

I like the affinity feature. It's fun to see someone who's seen a lot of same shows so I can compare our scores!

we have 69.9% affinity, lmao nice!!

I do. I find it useful to have an idea if I have comparable taste with someone else (50%+) then go through their list and steal some anime/manga rated 8+ for my PTW.

I find it a tacky concept from the get go because it immediately assumes that you are using MAL's scoring system and not your own.
It doesn't compare just the scores but the overall trend using the "Pearson correlation coefficient".

@Theo1899 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearson_correlation_coefficient

Had to do a double take when I saw the data lingo :D
I didn't know it used that coefficient when calculating affinity, I just figured it was something to do with the overall average and the standard deviation from that mean.
Also, that's such a smart idea. I usually just see users with high affinity with me and think, 'neat'. I don't know why I never thought to steal some good shows to watch.

I haven't been on the site as long as other people, so I don't know if this used to be a thing or not, but I kinda wish there was a way to look up users based on affinity and series shared and stuff. It would be easier to make friends

I found some malers here whom I have a 50-60 percent affinity but that's it. I look at it and it looks cool.
