I am no physics major, but my understanding of Schrödinger’s thought experiment is that the cat state of superposition of being dead and alive collapses the instant it is observed.

You're right. It has absolutely nothing to do with the show. Anime like this generally try to sound smarter than what they actually are by using cool terms which can trick the audience into believing there's a deep meaning behind everything.
"Doubting everything that you take on... That is very important. Open your own eyes, clear out your ears, and look and listen to the world... And think using your own brain. After you've doubted everything, there is a possibility of something real to believe in. To believe in something, doubt everything."

it's not really related to the adolescence syndrome but Mai's case specifically. It IS trying to be cheeky but I don't think it's just tossed there without a purpose. It's associated with the first case

These experiments that are tied to these phenomenon aren't meant to be taken straight as some sort of apt explanation for what is going on. Sure Futaba & Sakuta try to make sense of it through them but they are more so meant to speak about particular characters as some sort of analogy as that they are describing how these syndromes work.

It basically goes like this.

The atmosphere is where it all begins. Atmosphere is pretty much a synonym for "social norms". If it becomes the social norm to reject an individual within a certain social circle said individual is more apt to trigger a puberty syndrome which is the manifestation of said rejection and its nature depends on the type of rejection.

In Kaede's case she got rejected by her friend circle and it became the social norm to bully her. It affected her mentally to a degree where the syndrome kicked in and she got these cuts.

In Mai's case...she suddenly dropped out of the show biz and entered a new environment in form of the school, an environment in which all kinds of social groups had already manifested themselves. In that environment it became the social norm to ignore Mai which of course was not what she wanted. She didn't want to be the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons but she also just wanted to socialise normally for a girl of her age. So due to her being unable to make any social ties to anyone made it so she got increasingly affected and the syndrome took affect.

Her syndrome was tied to Schrödinger's Cat cause it was something that was similar enough for it to have made sense for Futaba & Sakuta. More so it acts as an analogy for Mai & especially Sakuta & Mai's dynamic. It was never meant to function as an accurate explanation for a supernatural phenomenon.

The latest episode in particular with its absurd revelation that some butt kicking ended up involving Sakuta should tell you that stuff like Schrödinger's Cat or Laplace's demon are way more loose in the way they're used than you think.

It was an analogy to Mai's specific case and nothing more. Because she ceased to be observed her existence came into question.

Would not take it into 100% theory= 100% the practice
Since sakuta asked for scientific explanation and futaba is a lab girl , she just explained it in a term that is quite similar to the case based on her understanding , which is the schrodinger cat < imo

What's your point if not reinforcing his? LNs are not precisely known for being great literature.

That's true, but Steins;Gate has the same amount of nonsense-science and never or rarely gets called out for it.

It is not uncommon for anime to use Schrödinger's Cat to show that observations have some power. Since observations are performed by humans, it can be used as a sci-fi science explanation for effects that relate to humans "observing" things.

In this case, one possible reasoning goes something like: The cat is undefined (exist/alive or not exist/dead) until it is observed. Mai is not observed -> Mai is not defined.

This is all nonsense of course, and I don't know if my explanation is what the authors intended.
