You're kidding, right? The game has more than the anime could ever hope to offer. Why do you think people who never played Tales of the Abyss (or any Tales game) were so confused with certain aspects of the animes for Tales series?

They're not the same.

Basic plot and character wise, maybe. But animes for games NEVER go into the depth of what the games have to offer. So, no. They're not 'slightly different'. They're VASTLY different.

Jokes on you, OP. I was going to buy Persona 5 last year when I saw it on sale at Best Buy, but decided not to. Now I'm about to watch the first episode and proceed to bombard the discussion thread with questions. Who's the real loser now?

You for not 'getting gud' and buying the game when you should have. Time to bust out that PS4, buddy.

I'd say it'd be a lot more entertaining for someone who never play the game.
Then at least it would be just a plain "mediocre anime" to them, not an "insult to the original".

The anime has less detail and faster pacing than the game, yeah, but it's the same story? It isn't some puzzle you can only figure out if you've played the game. In my opinion I think playing the game is better than watching the anime but I'm not going to criticize people who are only watching the anime.
That's like saying you can't watch an anime if you haven't read the manga or light novel it was based off of.

Knowing that they will likely be lost and will keep asking questions here? It's an exercise in futility. Game adaptations are for the people who've played the source already.

Not wasting money on a PS4 for a handfull of games, story is easy to follow so i don't get your point.

A failed attempt at elitism, sad development for the anime comunity right here folks!

Lock this thread already. The OP made the stupidest point I've seen in a while and this is MAL we're talking about.

A quick look at the title I thought it was about someone with pure curiosity yet what I discovered after clicking is actually a diss towards people who haven't/didn't play the game. Well to answer the title question I watched P5 mainly because of the seiyuu, the animation and the arts and hype I've seen people posted in social media "before" the anime adaptation is aired. Now to answer the one who created the discussion thread: personally I wanted to know what P5 is about without having to play the game nor read the whole information that people posted regarding what the game is about. In addition I am not a gamer but would like to see what the fuss of P5 is about. And yes, while there's the possibility that the anime cannot cover all of the game or even if it might be a poor adaptation but hey, at least I get to know a bit what P5 is about.

And I agree with what people have posted before me said, P5 adaptation might serve for the interest of those who have played the game BUT it also serves as a marketing for those who have not played the game and might be interested in doing so after watching the anime. Just like how I watched Touken Ranbu but didn't play the game yet I still get what the whole game is about after watching it and have become a fan of it. Not only games, even manga or LN as well. Just because I haven't read them yet doesn't mean I can't watch it and if after watching I don't get what the series is trying to tell then it's either a bad adaptation or it is purely for fan (which should have been sold to the fan in the first place). And there are cases where after watching the anime I actually went to read the manga (either from the anime continuation or from the beginning).

So, if P5 anime only allows those who played the game to watch it (and should other adaptation follows the same rule) then the fan and sales number would just get stuck at the same figure and not moving a lot because newcomer are not allowed into it.

All you can do is hope that people will play the game afterward at least.

The thing that bothers me the most is that people will judge Persona 5 from this anime, which isn't bad by any means. It's just that it seems like it's enjoyed the way it's supposed to be if you've played the game already.

Lots of anime is from manga , VN, LN , games , if they never played / read so they basically dont watch any anime at all
You dont need to know the source before watching the manga , and what is the problem with questioning

That's like asking "Why do people who haven't played the Danganronpa games watch the anime?" I happen to be one of those people (and also one of the people who watched Youtubers play the game) and the anime gives you a somewhat different, but interesting, story.

Anyway, I decided to watch Persona 5 the Animation because I kinda wanted to get a shorter version of the game. (I could never finish or find myself continuing to watch the video game playthroughs.) Also, I just thought the anime would be interesting and nice to watch. I'll just try my hardest to understand anything that happens to be confusing.

People who watch Danganronpa 3 when that's actually a case where the anime's is specifically meant to be watched after going through the games story
...now those...those are the real idiots XD

In my case, I never knew the Danganronpa games even existed until I had just started watching Danganronpa 3: Future Arc. Before, I had always just heard about the Danganronpa anime and I probably would've overlooked it had I not actually bothered to read its summary.

+1 for everything above.

I don't own a PS4 and won't be able to for the foreseeable future.
I would rather play legally than illegally via emulator.
The anime has been fun so far.
Episode 1 was admittedly pretty confusing, but so far I understand what's going on.

I want to play the game now.

Fair enough? The anime basically did its job for me: being entertaining while promoting game content. Spoilers have never and will never bother me so that’s not really a problem for when I get to the games.

As someone who never bothered to play the actual game (my knowledge of the game comes from reading all the Persona 5 stuffs at Megami Tensei wiki, plus I'm too broke to even own a PS3 or a PS4), this anime follows pretty close to the original source. I can understand the gist of it since I'm quite familiar with the Persona universe.

All I can say that this anime is pretty good for starters. Who knows? They might pick up the game after watching the anime, at least that's what happened to me after watching Persona 4 the Animation.

important question!

I'm a big fan of Persona games but I'm so poor I can't afford a PS3 or PS4.

If I watch this anime, would that be a major spoiler if I play Persona 5 someday in the future?

Sorry for the bad english

Because some people don't have the luxury to invest hours and hours of their life in a game so they just watch the anime to experience the story in whatever the short amount of time they have.

Well the anime is currently following the game so if that's what you'd call a major spoiler then yes

It may go its own way later on, but that won't happen until some spoiler stuff happens anyway

Game adaptations are only for people that played the game? No.
Having knowledge of the game helps, but anyone can watch this tho.

Because people go into it expecting the anime to be able to stand on its own as an adaptation. That's not too much to ask for, and that's how it should be. An adaptation isn't supposed to be a fanservice for the people who are familiar with the source material. That's what you call a shitty adaptation.
