Man, Fuyuki, Orleans, Septem and, to a lesser degree, Okeanos were such wasted opportunities. I'm glad Nasu took control of the project after chapter 4, but man, I hope they go back and redo these chapters, even if they have to novelize them independently from the game. |
| Actually I think the only reason the OVA feels better is because of knowing the stuff from the game already. I'll be honest, I would have thought it was crap if I didn't suffer through the prologue in the game. But yeah it did set a very low standard. Orleans was alright though. Nothing amazing but outside of questionable might-be-lore-breaking things and edgy Jeanne Alter I don't have many complaints. I disliked Marie (in battle, got her before Orleans) so I was biased against her, as a character she's alright but dear lord the voice acting is the type I hate most, and her design is bad. And I mean, that chapter had a way better Caster Gilles than FZ. Jeanne, Mozart and Mash were great so overall decent chapter. While we're talking about Orleans though, I did find the little Siegfried detour dumb. This is a mobile game after all, so I shouldn't be too harsh on it. That said, I've only ever heard bad things about Septem, kinda not excited to get into it :| I hear Camelot is good apparently, I'm not expecting much but if, at minimum, it's like Orleans then I'd be fine with it. If it's like prologue then I will be mildly disappointed. |

If it's like prologue then I will be mildly disappointed. Well, here's the story of F/GO that Nasu pretty much explicitly admitted in an interview and why the first few chapters are this bad. F/GO, originally, wasn't supposed to be a mobile game, but a console JRPG, with a Fate/EXTRA type two-parter story. When it was ultimately decided to be a mobile game, due to the insane budget the game will need to have to 3D model this number of characters and environments, Nasu decided to dump down the story because people wouldn't be expected to read pages after pages of text in a bathroom-break type of game. With that in mind, he put together Fuyuki with the least amount of effort possible and left Septem, Orleans, Okeanos and London to Higashide and Sakurai to do whatever they wanted as long as they don't break lore. That level of apathy for the project seems to have transferred to both authors and it showed, to the point that Sakurai flat out apologized on Twitter for Septem. Think about that. When the game became a success that took not only Nasu and Type-Moon by surprise, but Sony as well, to the point of featuring it as its own entity alongside Sony Music and freaking Playstation, Nasu decided to weigh in and the way he talked about F/GO seemed to change as well. It became Type-Moon's breakthrough into mainstream and that entails an appropriate level of attention and effort. The problem was that Okeanos and London were already written and ready with very little time for a complete rewrite, so Nasu took both chapters and revised them until they were unrecognizable from their original form. Nasu: There’s basically nothing that I left untouched. Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Prototype: Fragments of Blue and Silver are Higashide’s and Sakurai’s own stories, respectively, so anything they do with those is okay, except for setting mistakes. But FGO is a poster game for TYPE-MOON, so Kinoko Nasu has to put in his word into this scenario. I have to harden my heart and supervise this game. Both Higashide and Sakurai have said, “We submitted 100 kb of text to Nasu, then it came back as 180 kb of text.” But that’s not just simply adding 80 kb of text; it’s also revising the original 100 kb so that it becomes more Fate/-like. From that point forward, Nasu became the one and only writer. He wrote Camelot, Babylonia and the Final Singularity all on his own, and it shows. The writing is on a level you would expect from Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero, compared to the almost fanfiction-esque first four chapters. The average rating for the first four chapters for a lot of people is 4/10 (for me, it's 3-5-2-6/10, respectively), while Camelot, for example is a pretty easy 9/10 or even a 10/10 for a lot of people. That's the difference and the level of improvement we're talking about here. Sorry for the text wall, but it's very easy to get underwhelmed with F/GO without knowing its story and what to expect. |

[...Gil talk...] Shiokawa: By the way, I calculated the total volume of text from the prologue until now. If you count the main story, events, and interludes, it reached 2 million characters. It still doesn’t count miscellaneous flavor text, so it must be more than that. 4Gamer: At full-width text, that would be around 4 MB. I think Tsukihime and Fate/stay night are also around that range. Even if the text is split between characters, that’s still an unbelievable amount. |

Chapter 4 had some pretty crazy reveals and lore we thought will never be talked about in F/GO of all things, at the time. Chapter 6 was freaking Camelot. As you can see, Chapter 5 is in this position/sandwich where, while certainly entertaining, comparatively, it's just... alright. |

| Yay, finally done with 2016 Finale Quest and w/o use of any CS! :D I had one of those 'immortal waifu' moments at the end when Artoria Archer just refused to die. In retrospect, I should've brought Herk+Bond CE so I wouldn't have to rely on luck as much as I did here. |

I didn't realize that the NP gauge reduction per attack works on every enemy, not just Da Vinci, despite getting so far in the quest the first time. You're right, stall teams are king. Did it with BB/Tamamo/Jeanne with little difficulty. |
