The first video you posted was actually pretty good. I'm not too big of a fan of U2, but I liked Bono in this particular song. It was very calming, smooth like. The video accompanying it was pretty rad to. Some nice trippy space movie effects.

The second vid wasn't as good as the first one. I don't know what it is, but I just don't like the sounds used in this song (sounds kinda weird, I know). Sort of does sound like it belongs in an airport, though.

In order for me to like the music I am listing to, it must fulfill these requirements:
1. Be creative and original
2. The structure of the song must be complex, multilayered, and evolving. But by saying this, I might be raising the standard too high. But I mean that it cannot be simple and must change as the song progresses.

With these requirements, my taste tends to roam though the genres. I tend to stick to classical music and metal (with a handfull of general rock thrown in, but I'm picky about which ones). My favorite artist happens to be the (very, very) obscure French romantic compose Charles- Valentin Alkan (simply known in the music world as Alkan). My favorite band is Children of Bodom, Helloween, Metallica, and the sort. Other places I dip my feet in is ska (The Aquabats), classic rock (Boston, Led Zepplin, AC/DC), and a bunch of others. For people who still don't understand the requirements, the perfect example is Dmitri Shostakovich's 8th Symphony, 3rd movement (you can find it on youtube in the video entitled Dmitri Shostaovich).

As you can see, there is a wide variety of stations. Simply looking at them doesn't really describe what I listen to though. Working in an office all summer has really expanded my range and interest since I has access to wikipedia, youtube, and pandora. I've still been trying to define my taste, all I can say is that I like cerebral stuff. Of what else I listen to that isn't on my list mostly is the obscure sub-genres such as Krautrock, Suomisaundi, the more experimental works, and also specfic songs. I just started listen to Animal Collective today too. Below is an attempt to encapsulate my music tastes from about a year ago. It is really outdated, but is helpful and forms a good foundation. I plan on updating it though in the next week. Last thing of noting, I don't pay any attention to the lyrics since I mostly started listening to music with classical, AC/DC, and metal.

The reason why Pandora radio is only in the US is because of copyright laws. I am pretty fed-up myself with the US government and its laws (especially the copy-right ones), but thats a completely different topic.

I agree with you when people are branded to a specific genre, but mostly its the people who brand themselves to that genre because by that they shut themselves out from the rest of the music out-there to stay in their own little music world. Thats one of the reasons why I don't really like a lot of the metal community is because many of them are "elitist" and say whats metal or not. Tool isn't even listed in the Encyclopaedia Metallum. I don't know why, but its probably because it is part of the post-grunge metal scene (and since the sub-genre is influenced by alternative rock, then its not metal, or something like that--bullshit). In a way, its more of a thing of pride and to call themselves different from others or to be accepted. I, on the other hand, want to try to expand my music range as much as possible. I personally believe classical music is hugely underrated since it is associated with the "high-brows" and the culturely elite and isn't for the "average" person. I have to learn some music theory and learn sheet music where I'm going to for college (plus sing Gregorian Chants), so thats going to be fun.

I wouldn't get high while listening to Suomisaundi. A few of the artists purposely tried to make their music give their high listeners a bad trip (Mandalavandalz in particular named his newest album "King of the Bad Trips"). Probably because they are aiming for a completely different purpose, thier work becomes highly original. I posted one of his videos on the first page of this thread (its the psychadelic looking one with mushrooms). Actually, just smoke some pot to it before moving onto the really heavy hallucinogens (if you take them that is). I personally don't do drugs so I don't need to worry about that.

My new college roomate introduced me to Animal Collective and he's really big on music, so we will undoubtily be influencing each other heavily. I really like the modern psychadelic music rather then the classic stuff from the 60's and 70's. Probably because there is a heavy electronic and ambient influence that the classic stuff lacks. Now that I think about it, in my Facebook description, I use the word "emotional" in a very vague sense. Usually when its used in modern society, the emotions of sadness and pain are associated with it. Not so much with me. What I mean by "emotional" is the ability to bring out an emotion. Not just the ones already mentioned, but any emotion. That includes happiness, awkawardness, angery, frustration, you get the picture. I don't reallly know specifically what emotion it is, but stuff like trance where it creates an atmosphere and you become completely immersed in it (which is what I really like). So in a way, many of the more popular/popy stuff that is very simple and doesn't change I let it fall under the "emotional" catagory. An example is The Strokes pandora radio station (The Strokes, The Artic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand to name a few). I should rename it, but don't know what to change it to.
