For something to beat Love Live SunShine this year, it would have to have some sort of mainstream appeal and the anime needs to be rewatchable and enjoyable (as anime boils down to being an entertainment medium) for fans to want to buy the discs. That's what many anime fail at, which is why there are only a limited number of hits (>10k average) in a given year.

There's quite a few sport series coming out this year, and if the fujoshi latch onto one of them like they did with Free!/Haikyuu!!/Kuroko there is a chance something might challenge Sunshine! Just depends what the fujoshi go and group up to. If that happens it is.

Free!/Haikyuu!!/Kuroko can't even reach the tail of sales of LL season 2... . Plus the LL movie is the 5th best selling animation movie of Japan.. add to the fact that LL movie will sit in the top 1 for a while in terms of highest total earning of late night movie adaptation. We are comparing it to LL, the 4th best selling anime - so there it goes.

If aqours can be as popular as µ's.. we need a franchise as big as them to even the scales. AOT, DGrayman, Osomatsu is the only rivals worthy right now
