Take something like GTA for example, a game in which you play as a criminal and kill plenty of people. You can kill innocent people outside of missions purely for amusement and you can do so in a variety of nasty ways. The game has faced minor opposition but there have never been any serious moves to ban it and it's one of the best selling game series of all time. Now imagine if in the next GTA game there was a single mission where you raped someone. There would be a huge outcry, the game would most likely get banned, and the companies involved would all face boycotts. It's a strange situation as generally, based on the legal repercussions for such crimes, society does seem to deem murder a worse crime than rape (as in standard sentences for murder are longer than those for rape). This I understand. I just don't get the thought process behind it. Even if you take violence and crime out of the equation though, there's still a fair amount of double standards when it comes to sexualization. You can show man ass all day everyday and still get a pg13 rating. But just hint of female nipple, bam, instant rating increase. This translates over to cartoons as well, even kids cartoons, with the only stipulation being it be used purely for comedic effect. Thus technically not "sexualizing" the situation. In many older cultures they didn't exist in this form and instead there was a more fluid ideo of 'homoeroticism'. The concept differs from the concept of homosexuality: it refers specifically to the desire itself, which can be temporary, whereas "homosexuality" implies a more permanent state of identity or sexual orientation. People simply treat killing/hurting people as a (bad) action, and even if you enjoy it in a game it's obvious to most people that you just temporarily channel that side of you during the game because you know no harm is done in that context. Like any reasonable person would. We all have it in us, which is why gaming (or sports) are so successful. It's basically common sense at this point. But when it comes to lsexuality our 'common sense' looks very differently.
