lol Japan has the singel logest running TBS franchise ever so that show how much you know
Never played Daisenryaku but from looking at gameplay on Youtube I definitely don't like the look of the graphics and how it is mainly set during WW2 . I would rather play the Civilization series than that any day.

I just don't like how it is only mainly set in a modern time period. In Civ you start off in prehistoric times and then you can advance to the modern time. In the Civ games also conquest isn't the only way to win you can win through diplomacy, culture and being the first in space. In the Civ games you can research different technologies and build great wonders like the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal etc. In Daisenryaku you can't do that.

Verisimilitude in terms of combat? I prefer fun over verisimilitude. Combat is only a part of Civ so I don't really care if the combat isn't perfect.

My bottom line here is:

Games of genres other than RPG - no one really cares whether it's made in Japan or not.

Gonna go ahead and disagree with you here. RPGs have the most pronounced culture difference in their genres, I agree, but to say that all other genres don't have differences that stem from the different cultures? Yeah, no.

Then explain why there is no debate between a J-platformer vs a W-platformer.

you can't disprove someones general statement by forcing them to argue against a different more specific statement...

Historically, I'd call Flashback, Another World/Out of this world, OnEscapee, Blackthorne, Prince of Persia, and the lost Vikings "Western platformers." (there are others I never played -- so I didn't list them, but they would fit here also)

Atmosphere wise, most of these vary quite wildly from the eastern platformers of the era. Similarly, the platform semantics of these games was quite different from traditional Japanese platforming. Many of these added puzzle elements in addition to the platforming and generally had more far more realistic physics and platforming segments than you'd find in eastern platformers of the era.

Similarly, some modern incarnations reflect some of those design choices (modern prince of persias, tomb raiders, mirrors edge). There's also Psychonauts and Tiny and Big: Grampa's Leftovers which have the openworld/sandboxish nature also prevalent in Western RPGs.

Of course you have exceptions like the games produced by Ubisoft Montpellier (Beyond Good and Evil, Rayman).

As for why there is no debate of western vs eastern? Arguably because RPGs are a pervasive genre and other genres aren't. You can find about a thousand examples of RPGs on either side, but platformers and more generally other genres you can't. Over-saturation of the particular genre has led to a distinct polarization in the minds of players. You'd see similar effects and debate if Eastern FPSs became prevalent.

well Japanese games have their great qualities. i say that because i watched the anime and read the manga of a certain scientific railgun and a certain magical index. so i found they had games to it and low and behold i bought them or sorta bought them for psp. sure their in japanese and i cant read them but their set up the same. japanese games just to me show more feeling when u play them when they talk. just like u watch a subbed anime so much feeling. sorry for the length.

It really depends on the genre for me. In my opinion Japanese make WAY better fighting games that are much faster and more fluid (can't stand MK's command inputs). However, open world is usually much better in the West. For RPGs though it's kinda tie. But anyways both have their strengths and weaknesses.

It's all a matter of preference. I prefer Japanese games to Western games. I grew up with them and they're familiar to me. Games like Mass Effect and Halo just don't do anything for me.

I've been a fan of Japanese games since the start of my gaming career. Most games I played as a kid were Japanese, like Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past, MegaMan X, Aladdin, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV Turtles in Time etc. Even later on the PS1 I ended up being a bigger fan of the Japanese games, like Final Fantasy VII and IX, Breath of Fire IV, Bust A Groove/Move 2, Digimon World series, Metal Gear Solid etc.

So yeah, it's kinda logical that I'm still more into Japanese games, mostly because I'm not that big of a FPS or RTS fan. I mean, I used to play Age of Empires II, Warcraft III, Battle for Middle Earth etc. and Civilization is still one of my favorite game series. And I do love the Borderland series and Far Cry 3. But the Japanese favorites just outnumber the western ones. Blame Square/Soft/Enix, Capcom, Nintendo and Konami.

Japanese games today are alot more moderinzed then ever where many tropes from the past due to technolgiical and budegtary limitations are being stripped away piece by piece making it more acessible while familar to veteran fans and honestly Japanese games are really my personal favorite types of games.

Depends its mix and match.
Japanese games tend to stick to a proven formula that is popular and works.
Rarely do we get a new formula or attempt to change things up

jp games mostly are still in the VN heavy titles. With elements of other gameplay.
I mean look at Koei and its Warrior games, its a tried and tested model that works and sells, consumers know what to expect atleast until they tried open world with Dynasty.

Western games are fun, but they are draining on everything.

Each new Total war games needs a new component for me to run it smoothly.
I want to see more games be optimised for low end builds.

Also I would say Japanese games I find are usually bug free, depending if the release is late for the west due to license and translation so we get the version all patched up.

That said there are less and less JP titles that actually make it to the west.
