Spirited Away is the only anime to win an Oscar, what other anime movies would you consider Oscar-worthy?

My Neighbor Totoro. I don't really care about the Oscars, though.

Hotaru no Haka or Totoro would have probably won one if there was an academy awards for best animated pictures at that time.

For the rest: none, I'm sorry. The Oscar are mostly an american thing, so for a Japanese movie to win it, it has to be really really special or big advertising.

Lets be honest, awards don't really matter.

But for good animated films, Ghost in the Shell.
Laputa, 5cm Per Second. There are alot.

Yea. I would say it goes both way for the two countries, just that one is the dominant culture at the moment and hence gets more international attention.

Oh Totoro is a good thought, the thing with Spirited Away though is that Miyazaki had finally made a name for himself in America, so when it was released in 2001 it actually stood a chance, his previous works were before he had made a name for himself (or atleast wasn't "mainstream" enough yet) so they really didn't look at anime for greatest animated film of the year, I would say that any Ghibli films released nowadays if at the same caliber as Spirited Away in originality and plot as well as geared towards a younger audience will stand atleast some chance at winning the Oscar (although they really do have to be stunning to beat out an American movie).

I would say that My Neighbor Totoro (the movie where they get the Ghibli logo from) would have been a good choice for an Oscar but ... Think that anime movies shouldn't really concern themselves with Oscars however if they win one it should be clear that they are extremely well done as it is very clear that the odds are stacked against them.

Would agree that being able to say "Only anime to have ever won an Oscar" kind of does matter, atleast when selling, it's alot more appealing than it not being there ... Although having said that don't think people should only watch things because of awards, but lots of people on MAL don't watch a show because of it's rating on MAL so ...

Kaiba definitely deserves a notable mention within the artistic expression avenue.

Well of course they're going to laugh at the amazing writing in the comedy parts. How could you not laugh at Ritsu trying to talk to the creepy British guy at the sushi place in broken English. Or the part at the start where the band plays along to the Death Devil tape. Although I don't think you're giving the western critics the respect they deserve. They're going to have to focus on more than just the comedy if they were to critically analyse it. If I were a critic, I'd also focus on how the dramatic undertones and coming of age themes tie in with the comedic elements.

I don't know about the others, but saying K-On! is Oscar material is just silly. It's not that the show is bad, it's actually really good for what it is, it's just that it's a for funzzies show, and nothing more. Although yes, people do jump on a hate bandwagon whenever they can, I'm just stating my opinion on the matter.

Oh, and one more thing, this

No, don't waste your breath. I don't really care.

It's just that saying that the Oscars are a joke because they are "purely artistic" is a dumb thing to say, because the entire entertainment industry is purely artistic.

Kinda like saying that the Super bowl is a joke because it is too sporty. Makes no sense.
