Yes, I agree that it is best to have the whole series but some don't work out that way. Sometimes you buy the first one and hope the boxed set is cheap so you don't buy any more individually but then they bring out a one cour boxed set for ¥50000... So you wait for the price to drop and it sells out. Oops...

^ But BD Box will not have those extra like the 90 pop song the seiyuu sang... I guess besides the waiting time, some fans are willing to pay the extra for all those extras bundled in individual volumes but not in a BD Box....
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Sometimes the boxed set has new extras so they hope you buy them all... And some super fans gladly do ;)

I can see why it would sell so much less than SAO. :/

How are ratings? Maybe people just don't like it enough to buy Accel World?

I think it's because the MC is a fatty. At least I've often heard people mention that as a/the reason why they didn't like the show, as ridiculous as it is. Not sure if the japanese people think the same though.

e: What about light novel popularity? (before the anime I mean). Was it on the same level as SAO? If yes, then I guess the difference is Sunrise/A-1 Pictures?

I probably regret this post by now.

Since they're both late night anime, ratings are negligible for both.

Oh yeah, forgot about that.

As far as light novel popularity, I think SAO has outdone Accel World in terms of sales and overall popularity as soon as it debuted. Not sure but I think it was found odd that Accel got adapted before SAO?

I'm glad Accel World is selling fairly good. Heck I hope there is a second season.

Sword Art Online has been around a lot longer than Accel World (it actually dates back to 2002) and thus had more time to gain popularity. It also has Indie cred from originally being a Web Novel and god knows Japan (especially niconico) loves supporting them some doujin franchises former or otherwise.

People think about these things way to hard I think trying to find specific and deep qualities that make things stand out to Japanese buyers but from everything I've ever been able to tell their is one major overriding factor that seems to dominate almost all others with very rare exception. Name brand recognition.

More time can also mean more time for the popularity to wane. I do not think how long the LNs are around should have that much influence for the popularity. At the end more time can mean more enthusiastic fans or fewer.

Not sure what you want to say here. If anything, there are not that many who came to SAO via the web novel as a proportion of the present SAO fans. At least it is common to find one in any SAO discussion I check in Japanese forums. As for doujin, it is the same case for all the successful anime/manga/game title. Not sure what makes SAO special in this case.
