Re-watched Akunin on Saturday, had my DVD in the post on the Friday and couldn't wait to watch it again. It's definitely up there with my all time favourite films.

71 Into the Fire - Really enjoyed it. If you liked Brotherhood [Taegukgi] and haven't seen this, I highly recommend it.

The chess players - Starting with Indian director Satyajit Ray, this one was an unexpectedly easy to follow masterpiece, focused on the British colonialism and the apathy of two Indian nobles who keep playing chess and not caring while the country goes through important political changes. Greatly ironic and very beautifully-crafted, the pacing is slow but it never gets boring, instead, the fascination grows and grows till the very end. 10/10

Saw Confessions last night. What a fantastic movie. If I were to make one criticism, it would be the use of western pop songs. There were some scenes where I would have much preferred silence.

Just saw the new Sherlock Holmes. It's entertaining, but I feel like Hollywood is just remaking the same type of film while slapping a different franchise on it. I felt the same way with the first film - entertaining but nothing special.

The House Maid (Remake) (Korea) - A good film with psychological twists and great cinematography. I have not seen the original so I don't know how it stacks up. 8/10

Cold Fish (Japan) - This maniacal thriller and its unique style makes for a great film. 8/10

Hansel and Gratel (Korea) - The film's dark atmosphere is intriguing but ultimately falls victim to repetitive devices and sluggish storytelling. 6/10

Sweet Little Lies (Japan) - A great romance/psychological drama with engaging characters and storytelling. Cinematography is also well done. 8/10

I can't believe it's more than ten days since I watched it... Erasmus routine again. Really, it's damaging my film watching activities so much.

The exterminating angel - Third full-length film I watch from Buñuel and this one stays in the second place behind Viridiana, leaving the third place to The young and the damned (which was a bit of a disappointment, although I liked it . It shares the same highly satiric tone, but if not really flawed, the beginning was uninteresting for me; maybe because the characters themselves and their atmosphere were, their typical bourgeois artificiality, if fitting with the theme of the film perfectly, is a little hard to bear. 9.5/10

What version did you see? Takashi Miike's movie was good but the old movie is a lot better. I recommend you look at that :)

Last week I saw season 6 of Dexter. It was very good and the ending was simply epic. I don't usually follow TV shows since most of them bore me to death (with few exceptions) but this one is awesome.

13 Assassins (Takashi Miike)

I found it really disappointing considering all the hype it got. It was too rushed, had too many characters and while I'm no expert at cinematography I disliked how it was so damn dark during indoor scenes.

Definitely doesn't hold a candle to Seven Samurai as far as I'm concerned.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I don't know. I expected more.

Currently working my way through Kurosawa's films on Hulu Plus via the Wii. The entire Criterion collection is there. Man, this thing is a godsend. =)
Netflix, for some reason, removed practically all his films from their streaming lineup. Can't say I understand why.
Anyway, Throne of Blood was the most recent. I thought it was an amazing adaptation of Macbeth and easily one of my favorite Kurosawa films so far. Next up will either be Stray Dog or The Bad Sleep Well.

Japanese movies aside, I just watched Midnight in Paris. Nice film.

Hana & Alice. Not my favorite film from Iwai (then again, I've only seen April Story and All About Lily Chou Chou) but great nonetheless. The film successfully communicates the sensitivity of feelings associated with friendship and attachment - all in a way only a 15 year old can understand.

Beginning to think Adrift in Tokyo may become one of my favourite films ever. Second time watching it, sooo damn good. Requiem for a Dream was brilliant, too, and Real Steel was a lot better than I expected it to be. The Fountain was a bit hit and miss, but I'm glad I watched it. A very memorable film and one with such a fantastic score. Clint Mansell, I thank you.

I've seen bits and pieces of Trainspotting. Kinda surprised I still haven't seen it all the way through. I'll try and get around to it soon.

I watched Love Actually a couple of days ago. Another film I'm surprised it took me so long to see. Saw Tarnation today. Quite an interesting documentary. Really great soundtrack, too.

Started reading Casio Abe's "Beat Takeshi vs. Takeshi Kitano" so I decided to rewatch Violent Cop. A damn good film. I highly recommend Casio's book to those interested in Kitano. It has great insights and enriching analyses of his individual films(up until Dolls).

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - Despite the awkward English-Japanese moments, the film's quite good. Great soundtrack.

Adrift in Tokyo - A quirky and charming film with awesome cinematography.

Branded to Kill - One of the most stylish films I've seen. Amazing work from Seijun Suzuki.

Kairo - Although its plot is weak, its atmosphere and cinematography is fantastic. The social commentary regarding the internet and the isolationism it brings is really intriguing, even though the film kind of fails to wrap it up in the end. Overall, a great and creepy film.

Blood and Bones - Powerful and heart wrenching. The film to me is a confrontation with the social entrapment of women and Korean minorities imposed by the brutal, patriarchal, and militaristic ideology that gave rise to the Empire of Japan - one that treats humans as nothing but blood and bones and is anthropomorphized in Kitano's character. Overall, a great and compelling film. Highly recommended.

@Touka Totally agree. Kitano's performance in Blood & Bones is one of his best.

Strawberry Shortcakes - Good film with awesome cinematography. The drama among the four women is engaging but the ending is a bit contrived and forced. Disappointingly, the four women's outlooks ended up being pretty superficial and identical - they all just want love. Maybe that was the point, but I think the film had a lot of potential to break down cliches and communicate something challenging and new.

- Hugo
- Chicken Heart
- Cashback

Really enjoyed them all. For all its unnecessary nudity and cheap comedy, Cashback still remains a throughly intriguing film and one so relatable. Fantastic soundtrack as well, and some really well written dialogue. Really surprised this has gone so unnoticed, even in Britain, and especially since the short film that came before it was Oscar nominated.

Chicken Heart is from Hiroshi Shimizu, Kitano's assistant director who also made Sucide Bus, and as with his previous film, this too was a real diamond in the rough. Great cinematopgrahy, very Kitano-esque, fantastic bursts of comedy and a very moving ending. Although I'm probably being overly sentimental.
