The following pic is one of Alpha, lead character of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou....
Author Ashinano Hitoshi drew this picture in 1997 as a pencil sketch, and it was colorized by myself just a few weeks ago.

it's been a while since I posted, but that's cause i've been trying to learn anatomy all this time xD here's the result of my practise so far >.<

I used to only be able to draw faces, this is my first ever full body drawing. I also experimented with shading a little on this picture. Any and all criticism is welcome! I know i'm not great so I don't mind constructive criticism!

Also, this is not entirely original, I drew it using a reference at my friends house, but I have no idea how to reference it xD So i'll just say I used a reference lol

Well, I guess I'll post one of my latest drawings then too

I wish I could work with a tablet like the other great drawings ;;
Also to Lihn
Really cute chibi :3
It's nicely done, only the ribbon is a bit out of place I think. Though maybe the character just wears it like that xD

To junichi, That drawing of yours is amazing! I've been struggling with learning to draw clothing and anatomy. Also thanks for the compliment, and that ribbon was seriously pissing me off, I could NOT get it to look right, I just gave up and moved on xD And I also wish I could draw with a tablet. That'd be awesome xD

Not that i’m good at drawing, but i guess these turned out pretty well. Considering that I lack the knowledge of human anatomy (studying it right now though…).

@ Th3End

I like the 3rd one though it's not particularly awesome or anything. It's how it looks so simple that makes it attractive, I suppose.

The first one looks pretty good.

The second one looks a mess though.

Thanks.

Yeah, the third one is just plain simple drawing while the others are more "serious" or whatever you wish to cal it. I agree about the second, it's not really done, but i grew tired of trying to fix it and started a new project.

Maybe. I am not so sure. I don't have a very good art program at my home computer, so I have to rely solely on Gimp...

It's a sketch, if you noticed I didn't even put a face on him... so no ears either. Yeah the pose looks funny, but if you look at renaissance art, they had a lot of unconventional poses. Mostly it was convenient to show the anatomy in the arms and legs. Feet may be a little small, but they seem within acceptable range to me. Don't know why, but you don't seem to ever have anything positive to say about my work... sometimes I wonder if you're commenting just to troll me... anyway, thanks for the feedback.

So I drew this the other day, it's referenced from another photo, so it's not an original. But i'm still happy with it, I learned how to draw hands better and I figured out a bit more about how shading works...although overall I still see a bunch of things wrong with it >.<

@perspective I always like seeing your drawings and your style! I think maybe Alexsadistsama is just trying to keep your from getting only positive feedback? Everyone needs somebody to tell them they're not good sometimes, so that they keep trying to improve. Or maybe you're right and you're just being trolled....

Thanks for your appreciation. I'm not butt hurt or bitter about it at all; I know it's part of life. You can tell when someone isn't giving you constructive feedback though. It seems that rather than giving an honest critique of the work, that their goal is to knock you down a peg or two. Its kind of obvious he's flaming me, especially from some of his other past comments.

About your drawing, I think my advice would be to sharpen some of your basic tools. Draw spheres, boxes, cylinders. Give them life by bending and animating them, connect them together (example: torso can be a ball and the hips can be a box so combine them as if you had two solid objects inside of a sock. Bend and twist them), overlap the objects one in front of the other (really important for forshortening). They really become your basic building blocks and tools to describe form. Also, think about 3d and 2d relationships. Once you have the ability to describe form accurately, these drawings become much easier for you.

Honestly I'm not trolling or flaming you. I just give my honest opinion on your works, as I do with any other person's work. I understand that sketching or drawing can take a lot of time and effort, so it would be nice to hear positive feedback. However, since this thread is open for comments, I think by giving my opinion it could provide some insight into how you could improve or help you find out what someone else thinks and whether you agree with the opinion or not is entirely up to you. Just want to clear up any misunderstandings.

Okay then my apologies. It just means I need to put forth more effort then. I honestly thought your last comment that one of my drawings looked like a dude was kinda far fetched, but hey, if it's your opinion I'll just respect that.

Don't take alexsadists comments too personally...it's his opinion and personal tastes. He tears me apart too, so you're not the only one. Definitely nice to see anatomy studies...the most important part is if you learned something; not what the studies look like.

I absolutely love that drawing! Kakashi is one of my favourite characters ^-^ I'm taking perspective's advice and going back to the basics with my drawings to see what I can improve, so I doubt i'm going to post a new drawing for quite some time.

@lilia: that drawing/painting? Isn't that bad...I love the idea...but something about the way you executed it when making the girl really bugs me? Perhaps it's the noodley limbs or something?

After a long gruelling week of work and other things I had some free time to work on some art this weekend. In particular I was studying feet when it occured to me that perhaps my last advice to you didn't make a whole lot of sense. I mean I talked about the "how" of drawing form a lot, but maybe I didn't really cover the "why?". My own philosophy on drawing is that "life drawing" is very important and it will make you a better draftsman whether you become an animator, illustrator, or anything. This is why a lot of times I'll post drawings that are based on anatomy and gesture; but I think a lot of people don't really see the link between them and the actual animation/manga drawings that they see as a result of those studies from other artists. I prescribed to you to go back and visit the basics because you need to develop some basic tools to draw. The sphere, box, cylindar, and other shapes, overlapping, etc, are a pre-requisite for your studies in anatomy. And anatomy will eventually give you the freedom to be as detailed or obscure as you want in your drawings; the power to exaggerate and unlock your imagination. I've posted a page in my sketchbook that hopefully will make it obvious how I use these visual tools when I draw in an attempt to give people some insight into how I think of things mentally while I draw. I've tried to make it obvious what goes through my head as I use the shapes to describe things. Sorry if I suck at this, but I hope that it will inspire someone to see things differently with my approach. Also, this is just one path and there are many others who don't do it the same way I do, but are amazingly talented and draw circles around me. My goal isn't to compete with them, but rather to give ideas.

That follow-up message was definitely helpful! That was kinda the insight i'd drawn from your original statement, but the drawing really did help me see how it all comes together! Thanks ^-^ I wasn't going to do any serious drawings for a while, but I woke up at three last night and felt like I absolutely had to draw this xD
There are actually some anatomy problems with this drawing, but I'm still happy with how it turned out (Like how his left arm is...a little off xD)
