...Axis Powers Hetalia? Hey, there's some history in that.

Good luck finding any historical anime that isn't Japanese history, though. I'm sure there a few set in Victorian England or something, but ancient, non-Japanese history? Good luck.

Try the stuff from World Masterpiece Theater, anime based on famous works of literature from around the world. You'll find anime versions of Anne of Green Gables (turn of the century Canada) and Heidi (19th century Switzerland and Germany) among others.

Hadashi no Gen is about a boy who saw the bombing of Hiroshima right through his eyes. It's not a anime, well, it IS but, a movie..y'know? HIGHLY RECCOMENDED. It aired back in the 70's/80's..so, it's pretty old.

Hakuouki~ Edo
Hakushaku to Yousei~ 19th Century England
Kuroshitsuji- 19th Century England
Maybe even Fate/Stay Night, Romeo x Juliet and Spice and Wolf?

I don't know many more :/

Grave of the Fireflies tells WW2 through the lens of a Japanese family, and presents its story honestly. It's one the few movies, anime or otherwise, that I consider beautiful. If you liked GoF, "Ushiro no Shoumen Dare" is worth checking out, though it lacks the same grace and impact. Both of these films avoid the only-family-in-Japan-to-oppose-the-war stereotype and refrain from whining

Haven't watched Barefoot Gen or Rail of the North Star, but I previewed them and they seem similar. For manga, try Town of Evening Calm, though I found it somewhat whiny. There's quote along the lines of "so you got another kill ... are you happy?" Good manga, though

Seeing WW2 through "enemy" eyes can be interesting, and these anime are great experiences

Le Chevalier d'Eon- 18th Century France (during French Revolution), and is also historically accurate regarding the politics of the time... minus the magic part of it.

Samurai Champloo - Edo period
Steamboy - 19th century England

Gainax's new anime after Panty & Stocking will be a series set during early 20th century Britain as well.

preferably a well made one... vinland saga is pretty sweet, would prefer it not to get raped with some half-assed production.

Enzai- shota hentai set during French Revolution

Dog of Flanders- 19th century Belgium, based on a true story of a boy and his dog

Gun Frontier- has a science fiction bend to it but its basically the only anime Western that exists. It's like Captain Harlock with cowboys

The Cockpit: It's a three part OVA series about axis WWII pilots.
Nice
