Since I think we need more anime discussion threads I decided to bring this up.
I just finished last exile, and after hearing so much about it and seeing it with so high ratings on other ressources I expected so much better.

following quotes were brought from the "Last anime you finished" topic here so the actual discussion wouldn't occur there. hope you guys don't mind.

For me it had it's ups and downs in enjoyment. I think the story has some plot holes like in character relations and background.
And let me ask this question:
Is it just me or somethings just scream "Star Wars!" ?(e.g. battle ships; the race on ep. 3; the vanships fighting inside the battleships structures)

I saw it awhile ago (The first anime I watched from beginning to end after joining this site) so I don't remember it completely...

I thought it was good, but there wasn't really anything 'outstanding' about it imo. Decent plot, Decent Characters, etc.

I totally agree with lemon, nothing outstanding.
The only thing I found great about it was the animation. the mixture of 2D and 3D CGI's was pretty good.
I also think the main character is just too plain...although the secondary cast is interesting. Dio being the one I most enjoyed. I still can't understand why did he had to die, or die like that but whatever.
Wouldn't know about the english VA, 'cause I have alergy to dubs for some reason :)
Anyway I finished my review on it just a while ago.

I didn't get that from it, but then I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, so... :)

I saw Last Exile a while ago, so I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I remember really liking it.

Oh yea those machines types they were flying in totally reminded me of the star wars. Besides it's one of the main reason i was attracted to it anyway.

Overall last exile is a great anime and as you can see in my profile it's one of my favorites. I didn't like how DUo died in the end after his friend went through that much to save him, but at the same time it's ok since i didn't like him that much. I love the story, i do however hear some people complain that it has too much dialogues but that's what mostly interest me in an anime, rather than too much actions. I wish they could make a sequel,You don't get to see such beautiful anime quite often

i thought the setting was complete and believable until the last third where things got incredibly boring, dull, and generic.

The setting and style wasn't really my cup of tea, but I still enjoyed it.

The only thing I found a little annoying was the "Lavie, lavie, lavie".

very nice anime, animation is really good indeed, and my fave is Dio too. I guess this is one of those animes that gets better near the end.

oh and the opening is great.

I rather enjoyed it...I gave it a 9/10...
The only thing I really hated (beside "Lavie, lavie, lavie!!!")
was that soldier guy who supposedly died, only to mysteriously appear again in the ending as if nothing ever happened.
...
As for the StarWars feel, I can't say I felt that...I really like big airships/starships blowing each other to bits, but I don't really think of StarWars whenever i see such scenes...

Hah, that makes two of us then. They really overplayed that innocent cuteness card.

And that suit the main guy character had to wear when he was 'visiting' the baddies in the end (can't remember any names) looked more than ridiculous too. His pants' crotch hung between his ankles. Ffs.

Hello everyone, this is my first post!!

Last EXILE is my favourite anime, I loved it to every bits and pieces, despite it having a GONZO trait, which is "it could've been better".

I don't think it's overrated, if you can just appreciate its attention to details to such machines appeared in the anime, you can't help but to think how in the world can man (in the anime) made it possible. EXILE, Silverna, Urbanus, Hurricane Hawk, Fat Chicken, Sunny Boy, they're all absolutely amazing to me. They're what you call a machine with "soul". They're built with a unique character and such engineering feat to make them feel special and to outwit the rest, rather than built just to get you from A to B. Even each vanship is personalised with a unique figurehead!! You surely don't get to see much of these kind of things today, which is a sad thing. People (especially American, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian and now the Chinese) today just build cars to get you from A to B, they just build it with no soul, and no passion, rather than to excite drivers, or to be admired as the most beautiful of them all. Sorry guys, I am a petrolhead, and I just don't enjoy seeing these half-heartedly built cars on the road for the sake of making money. So when I get to see these incredible machines, it touched me so much that it made my eyes water. Honestly!!

Star Wars? Hm....I can only think of it when there was once when Tatiana ended her briefing to fight Urbanus with "May The Wind be with you", lol. Bt for the rest of the time.....now that you've mentioned it, a bit, but not really without light saber, lol. Alex Row though, felt a bit like Darth Vader, lost some precious to him, always appear unemotional... and the black cloak. He may not wear a mask, but his hair made it seem like it's similar to Darth Vader, from the back, that is.

As I said earlier, "it could've been better" with more interesting characters, and somehow, you get a sense that the animes' confused on who should get more screentime, I mean, Tatiana gets a whole episode to tell about her life, but then, she just fades away in the end, having no particular important role.

But hey, thumbs up for:
- Brilliant animation quality, the 3D addition just makes the anime more realistic
- Brilliant machines, they're incredible, they're extra-ordinary, and I loved them.
- Brilliant soundtrack, I just love to listen to them to relax, makes me feel like I'm in Europe in the olden days, when men used to make machines with pride and pure love, rather than just to be a billionaire.
- Excellent setup, in a retro-Victorian style and surrounding. Very, very detailed too, and if really pay close attention to the finer details, you'll appreciate them and felt inspired.

For that, it gets 10/10 for me.

Yeah, I have to agree with Tok; Last Exile is one of my favorite animes (which isn't saying much since I haven't seen many, but I like it more then Hellsing). Dio was my favorite character, though I don't know why. And why did he have to die that way? :( Makes me sad.

Its kinda weird; I thought that Mullin died, but you saw him in the ending alive and kicking...

(And the opening song is awesome).

I love Last Exile; it's the best thing Gonzo have done so far (except maybe Bokurano - time will tell). It's the sense of universe that did it for me more than anything. Unlike a lot of fantasy and sci-fi, Last Exile feels like a complete universe, with a real wealth of details that work together and flesh the place out (in that way, very like Star Wars - I got that vibe too =) ). The physical world, the technology, the brilliant politics, the costumes, the idea of an hourglass-shaped world with a permanent hurricane round the middle, all of it feels completely alien, and therefore fascinating, but at the same time plausible in its own context.

And the visuals. This is what made me notice Range Murata (the character designer), that retro-futuristic look he specialises in is absolutely beautiful and utterly perfect for this series. The incredible looking characters, the vanships, use of Greek characters, everything about the design is a textbook example of how to make a totally unreal world look real. Also, great sparing use of CG, and very good integration of CG and drawn art.

I really like the story and the script - true it's no masterpiece of subtlety, but it's as good as any adventure-type series of this kind, and although the end is a bit over-ambiguous for what the rest of the series is, it's still pretty cool. I thought that was Moran's son by Donya that you see at the end, not Moran himself; he looks a little young, especially given that Claus and Lavie also have kids in that scene (IIRC). I actually think it was a good idea to have Dio die at the end, I think it drives home what a terrible, unreversable change he's gone through because of Maestro Delphine. I always have some respect for series that work at this sort of level but aren't afraid to kill off characters; makes you feel the story more, I think. I also like all the characters (even Alvis, and I usually don't like child characters, especially when they're designed to be cute). Delphine is such a great villain, and Alex Row simply exudes coolness. Wish Alistia had been given a bigger role, though.

So yeah, I'm heavily in favour of Last Exile. I got the series on DVD plus the two OSTs for my birthday, and had a marathon in March =)

I argee with tis not outstanding but its still a good anime none the less. I really really love the animation I dont think I ever seen an anime with such high quailty and details animation like this. For that it deserves a high rank alone. The only sad part is no one knows really knows that Alex killed Queen Delphine that woulda made him more of a hero. I give Last Exile a high rating with there beautiful work even the soundtracks are beautiful. All in all Last Exile is a beautiful anime.

That end bit is set years later, by the looks of it (e.g. Lavie has long hair like her mum did IIRC) so by then, they could well have kids and Moran's son could well be old enough to resemble his dad. All just speculation of course, but it makes more sense than anything else I can imagine.

I agree. Dio was my favourite character in the whole series, enough to get me to buy the DVDs. The OP is one of the most gorgeous things I have ever seen/heard. The imagery is flawless and so is the music track. Same goes for the ED, actually. It is much more subdued and very soft and melancholy.

AUGH. I just finished it. Why did Dio have to die that way?! And why did Claus not give a rat's ass about it? He seemed to really care about what happened to him before he ditched him at the hospital. When he said, "How long's it been? A day?" to Claus I would have expected a response like, "AAAAAAAAHHH DIOOOOO! I'm so glad you're ok!!!!!!" Not, "Ignore him." :/

AND LUCIOLA. Ugh. Saddest sacrifice I have ever seen, and Dio didn't even live. Horrible.

Was lame how Wisa reported that Alex was talking RIGHT after Sophia ordered fire.

And I also think it was stupid how Mullin "died" and then came back magically in the ending.

I was disappointed. The first half of the series was definitely better, sad how the last ep killed it.
Up until ep 24 or so I was giving it an 8, dropped it to a 7 though.

Edit: Just read this on Wiki:
"It is stated in an interview placed in the Last Exile art book Aerial Log that Dio Eraclea was picked up by a passing Guild ship after he fell from his vanship in the final episodes of the show. In addition, there is a scene depicted in the series' official artwork showing Claus, Lavie, and their friends living on the farm turning and smiling at an individual stepping into the frame with them. Though all that can be seen is one foot and a waving hand, the individual appears to be wearing Dio's Guild uniform."

If this is true I will be so happy. I'm off to search for the artbook.

Edit 2: And here it is! It was actually confirmed that he lived and went to be with them. I'm so happy :)

Wow that's really interesting, windy! Thanks for sharing!

I personally thought Last Exile had a wonderful setting (one that I've never seen before in anime) and a wonderful cast of characters who struggled to shine to their true potential because of a weak storyline (or the story was simply told quite poorly). The latter eps of the anime were really emotive, which is a sign that the characters are the true value of the anime I suppose, since you really empathize with them.

Last Exile is one of my favourite anime. I love it so much that I ordered this book. Range Murata is the best illustrator ever.

I order it from J-list and the book contains most of Range Murata's best works.

...I honestly think this show is overrated...

Gosh. I really don't understand comments like that. "Like" is entirely a subjective term. As with anything, some people will like something, and some people will not. Why should a label of "overrated" be tagged to it just because a large group of people really really like it while others think otherwise? In the end, "like" and "dislike" are all subjective.

Whatever.

Last Exile is in my top five favorite anime and in my top ten favorite shows of all types. Yes, it has some flaws, and some weak points, even I will agree. But, the show as a whole came across to me in a way that it took me to another world. I wasn't just watching it, I was dreaming about flying a vanship, or being on the bridge of the Silvana. I found myself wanting to be a character in the story.

What else is there then? ;)

...Mullin "died"...

Hmm. I don't recall anything in the show, either a statement by a character or otherwise, that declared Mullin dead. My assumption was that he passed out from shock and blood loss and when Dunya found him she was to shocked at what she saw and just assumed he was dead without checking him.

The only thing the bothered me to give it a higher rating is that some things are not thoroughly explained

and lets the viewers make assumptions on their own.

But nonetheless, it was an enjoyable series to me. :)
