What are your favorites and least favorites? I think my all-time favorite opening would have to be the second Ranma OVA opening, which is sung by the female members of the dub cast. My favorite closing is a tie between Castle in the Sky (that theme song is unbelievably gorgeous) and the first Ranma OVA closing (also unbelievably gorgeous).

The final Code Geass opening was fantastic, too. InuYasha has some amazingly catchy opening and closing songs - the movies, too - which annoys me because I'm not all that crazy about the series. =( Bleach has some very well-picked ones, and the ending theme to Hellsing was really sweet. Paprika is another one very close to the top... definitely one of the best movie opening sequences of all time, maybe THE best. Cowboy Bebop, Paranoia Agent... lots of other great theme picks. And I'll throw Fullmetal Alchemist and Death Note a bone, too. They didn't stand out much but they were still quite enjoyable.

Absolute worst opening and closing theme ever award goes to Kekkaishi, hands down, though. I can't stand it. The singer has zero talent whatsoever.

My favorite Opening themes would be the ones from Baccano!, Black Lagoon and Ergo Proxy. As for endings, my favorites would be from RahXephon, the first ending song for Darker than Black, Ergo Proxy again(Radiohead!) and Ghost in the Shell SAC.

Ummm, those are really the only ones I remember without having to shuffle through my collection.

Least favorites, hmmm. I usually don't dig anything from the Gundam series that I have watched for some reason, but I wouldn't consider anything to be the worst.

In general or dubbed opening and ending themes?

Either way I really enjoy the OP/ED music of the 3 Key Animation series (Air, Kanon, Clannad)... As well as the english themes featured in Monster (ED1), Gundam X (ED1), Mushi-Shi (OP), Wolf's Rain (OP) & Eden of the East (OP).

The worst... Don't have one in particular, but I don't really care too much for the music featured in openings/endings by the Ali Project (Rozen Maiden, Code Geass, Linebarrels of Iron, Book of Bantorra) their music doesn't really appeal to me for some unapparent reason.

It's had for me to pick a good one because I like a bunch of them.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei opening and closing are always so awesomely bizarre. Black Butler (op/ed) Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales (OP 2), Le Chevalier Deon (OP), Darker than Black (OP 1), NANA(OP/ED), The Wallflower(OP), Spiral (OP/ED), Story of Saiunkoku(OP), Utena (OP/ ED), Princess Tutu (OP), Death Note(OP/ ED), Spice and Wolf(ED), Black Blood Brothers (ED)

Worst. mmm...not worse, but I don't like the 1st opening for D.Gray-man. It's so uninspired. The music was awesome, but the visuals didn't do it justice (just like the anime was to the manga *zing*). Kaze no Stigma (OP), just the visuals was standard and the music, I just don't think it fit. Code Geass (OP), it looks like they just made the promotional vids as the opener for the first season: Stills of the character sliding on screen and what looks like the clips from the show itself. Paradise Kiss(OP) for the same reason (love the songs though).I find alot of themes that are just boring and uncreative.

That one was annoyingly catchy, wasn't it? Especially the cheerleading part. It made me unbelievably jealous as a composer that the melody could change so completely and abruptly like that. D;

.hack//SIGN is another one I find myself listening to almost every episode... it's not that great a song, I just can't stop myself. It's so... intoxicating. Bererk's opening and closing themes were subpar, maybe even bad if I could go so far. Also the original Dragon Ball anime. I. Hate. That. Theme song. Azumanga Daioh's themes take some getting used to... I haven't made a final decision on them yet.

I'm just wondering, does picking openings/endings include dubbed ones as well?

There is one that's the first to pop into my head because while it's very recent, at the same time I don't feel like I can ever grow tired of it anytime soon. That would Toumei Datta Sekai by Motohiro Hata, the 7th opening of Naruto Shippuden. It's weird how that song has yet to feel old for me because normally I get tired of listening to opening themes from long-running shonen shows several months after I first hear them. I even got tired of Velonica, and I liked hearing that song for about what, a year?

I think I liked that song partly because it seems to best fit the setting for what I personally find as one of the greatest highlights of the Naruto story yet. And the animations in the opening made me feel like it more so. Not only that, but the way the song's done was what intrigued me since there is probably no electric guitar sound in it. And I think hearing the electric guitar in so many makes me lose interest after a while.

I also happen to like all of the Big Windup openings, especially the opening of the second season. "Dramatic" by Baseball Bears, "Seishun Line (Line of Youth)" by Ikimono Gakari and "Natsuzora (Summer Sky)" by Galileo Galilei. I think I like those songs because they support the sense of spirit behind the show itself.

Now as for english dubbed openings, my personal favorite song of all time would have to be (drumroll please)... THE 4KIDS ONE PIECE OPENING!!

Seriously though, my actual favorite dubbed opening is the opening of YuYu Hakusho. Classic.

Second place in my personal opinion would have to be the 4Kids Shaman King opening and I'm not kidding either. I genuinely liked how that opening didn't just have a lazy cop-out jingle and added in instruments that reflected the nature of the show itself. Third would have to go to the Digimon Frontier opening. I kinda liked that tribal sounding music for some reason.

Then fourth would go to the Pokemon: Advanced Battle simply because of all the Pokemon english songs, it felt that one had the most enthusiasm. Not to say I hate the first Pokemon theme, it's just if Pokemon was promoted on Saturday mornings again and there was a song to have me the most psyched up to watch it, it would be the Advanced Battle one. Then fifth would go to the 30 second Naruto english opening when it was on Toonami .

There are many good openings, but a few favorites include Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid (in fact, all the FMP openings are fairly good), Hirguashi no Naku Koro ni, Ef - a tale of memories, and Kino's Journey. As far as endings go, I would include Berserk (Engrish ftw), the second ending from Welcome to the NHK, and all of the endings for the Kara no Kyoukai movies (particularly #2 and #5).

To date, the worst opening I have seen is from the first season of Honey and Clover; on top of that woman's voice being incredibly annoying, the weird spinning stop-motion-animated plates of decorative food were pretty lame and sometimes downright unpleasant to look at-- what was up with that cake in the shape of pee-soaked panties?! Gross. Other than that, the openings for Last Exile and Ghost Hunt, while neither of which was unwatchable, were both pretty uninteresting and totally skip-worthy.

Definitely, definitely the girls singing it. Since I assume you're implying there was something wrong with Shou Tucker's voice I'll be the first to say that I was quite fond of it and can't imagine it being any more fitting.

The Berserk opening and ending were just subpar to me. The opening felt so generic and out of place for how grim the series itself was, and the ending... it had more of a sad, lonely ring to it, which made me enjoy it more than the opening, but it still didn't really wow me. Granted, I'm only speaking from memory.

Hmmm.

Favorites would have to go After Dark (Bleach #7), Papermoon (Soul Eater #2), Super Scription of Data (Higurashi Rei), Guns & Roses (Baccano) and Katayoku no Tori (Umineko). EDs I pay less attention to so I can only think of Kuru kuru Rin (Ninin ga Shinobuden) because ninjas playing the banjo is epic, Ringo Hiyori from Spice and Wolf, and Ashita no Te and Kutso Himo from Witchblade.

Worst OP...Kannazuki no Mikou. Not the song; I love the song. The animation. It doesn't seem to fit. Like, they just all look really awkward in tune withh the music, and it just doesn't look like the animators cared very much about the OP in general. :/
Same with Let Me Be With You from Chobits. Love the song, but the animation is awkward.
also, the dubbed version of Sakura Kiss from Ouran. I don't recall who sings it (Kristine Sa?), but...the first time I heard it, it made my ears bleed. Imho, it just sounds terribly off-key to my ears, and a few lines of the lyrics are extremely cheesy.

And for the record, I am actually quite fond of Soramimi Cake/Raspberry Heaven from AzuDai and Kaidoku Funou from Code Geass. :P

The only fan-sung anything I've ever heard was a fan recording of Stratovarius's "Celestial Dream", which has nothing to do with anime, but was pretty damn good regardless.

I have loads. But to name a few...:

FMA's fourth OP "Rewrite" is the first Japanese song I downloaded onto my phone.

NGE OP "Cruel Angel Thesis" is stunning considering how low budget the show actually was.

Baccano's OP "Guns & Roses"...that was absolutely brilliant. It was a good way to introduce the massive cast and the swing style music fit the setting of the show.

Black Lagoon, Toradora OP 1, and Clannad ~After Story~ are also amongst my favourites. Especially the last one I mentioned...the music was so moving it would shake me up before I even started the episode.

Maria Holic's OP was good animated wise, but the song, not so much. The end part of the song sounded pornographic (like sex noises).

I feel I must start of by saying I HATE english music. I can't listen to it, and I hate it when they change to OP of an anime from the orginal Japanese Song to an English version. I listen only to Japanese music(i have 5 MP3's of the stuff)
So for worst, pretty much every english version OP. apart from the OP for Fruits Basket and Ouran High School host club.

For best...hard choice. The first OP for Shakugan no Shana, Hishoku no Sora was awesome, plus its the only song i have on every one of my MP3's.
but I loved Both of Girls Bravo OPs. especially "Going my way".
As for endings...don't really watch the endings. I do download the songs though, so the ending to School Rumble, or Mai Hime.

Anyway, there have already been mentioned a lot of great openings. GiTS, Black Lagoon, Soul Eater are all great. The first Durarara op hasn't been mentioned yet. The Gunsmith Cats and ROD OVA opening have been forgotten, but are still great.

Worst is easy. The Second Deathnote opening is horrendous. Whoever decided to use extreme heavy metal for an opening needs to vanish from existence, like now. The second ending is almost as bad....

I guess I get what HaremAllMighty means. I thoroughly disliked the english version of OHSHC OP and ED, but I have to disagree with the Fruits Basket english OP. I thought they did a brilliant job with that one, even though the particular song isn't one of favourite OPs (in either Japanese or English).

GrimWizard said:

Yeah, both the Durarara OPs were good (it took me a while to get used to the second OP though) but the style of the OP was taken from Baccano! which I previously stated as one of my personal favourites. As for the song themselves in the OPs...well, they were pretty darn addictive. I'll add the DRRR OPs to my list of favourites as well as the first DRRR ED song (I have that on my phone)

As for my worst OPs...it will have to be most of the Naruto/Shippudden ones. And the Nabari no Ou one; that one sounded like it was sung through the nose.

I thought the second Death Note opening and closing songs were quite fitting, and not bad at all. And I have to IMMENSELY disagree with not liking English covers of Japanese songs. In fact, 99% of the time I prefer the English version to the Japanese one. The Yu Yu Hakusho themes, all fantastic. The first InuYasha theme was great in English. The second Ranma OVA opening and closing sequences are some of my favorites of all time, especially the opening sequence, which is sung by the female English voice cast and is absolutely gorgeous. Vic Mignogna's cover of Bratja/Brothers was magnificent as well. The one and only English cover I've ever enjoyed less than the Japanese version has been Fukai Nori/Deep Forest, one of the InuYasha closing songs, and then only because the English singer was lousy.

Not many opening and closing sequences have "moved" me in that sense, though, Yammin. The first Ranma OVA closing and second opening have both accomplished it, and the main theme of Castle in the Sky always gives me shivers. Otherwise, I can't really think of any other examples off the top of my head.

I've only seen a few Japanese to English translated songs. I just remembered about the Haruhi song "God Knows"; that was a pretty good english translated song. I agree with you there are the second Death Note OP/ED...I also loved the animation to the first ED of the show. Meh, I have the whole soundtrack on my phone :) When my friend and I finally got the hang of solving direct and indirect proportionality in maths last year we started playing the same theme song that
Very dramatic.

I think that's the only OP that ever did that to me, but sometimes when I hear/watch the OP song to other shows I can't help grinning (e.g. during Durarara's second opening song). By the way XTA, when is your new computer arriving? Your internet will be more stable then, right?

Another one I loved was... I think the third Bleach closing... ? The song's called Houkiboshi, which is a really catchy song by itself, but I love how each episode's ending animation corresponded with one of the 13 court guard squads and its members living casually. It was a nice change of pace back when you thought they were the antagonists and it's really sweet when you know they're not. <:3

I have to disagree, What's Up People was a awesome opening, it really got across Light's inner insanity so well. And my favorite part is towards the middle when he was on the roof, the part of the opening was seriously epic and nothing you can say can change my mind. Let's mix this discussion up a little bit. What are your guys' favorite soundtracks EXCLUDING the opening and closing themes? I think mine would have to be Death Note. It's the absolute epitome of what I love about classical music, and even the "modern film noir" style of the other, more mellow tracks were excellent. If I ever get to write/direct an anime as I hope but don't expect to one day do, I would push as hard as I possibly could to get the composers of that soundtrack working for me.

Paprika and .hack//SIGN are both in the running for second, too... but of course, these are just off the top of my head, I haven't given any explicit thought as to the order.

Other than Death Note, which is, you right, amazing, I like the Wolf's Rain, Darker than Black, Baccano!, and Spiral, for some reason.

Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (Dub version) and Gravitiation, not because I like the background music but I like the other songs within the series.

Oh and Samurai Champloo, amazing soundtrack. That soundtrack is number one for me, the best.

Princess Tutu has a good sountrack, too, but it kind of cheats.

I've recently fallen in love with Yoko Kanno, I really need to buy some of her soundtracks or something... all I have in my entire 1,500-odd music library of hers is the first Stand Alone Complex theme. That's it. She'd definitely be in the running for people I'd like to compose the soundtrack for my fantasy anime series, too... maybe even above the Death Note guys.

I LOVE the English versions of the songs in Fruits Basket. I think they are beautiful, and I love that it's VA's from the show that do the singing.

OHSHC- isn't bad, I don't particularly care for it in either language. Although it's growing on me. But I love all of the music that Vic recorded for that show.

A lot of the Inuyasha op/cl. In English or Japanese.

For my favorite sound track I'd say Rurouni Kenshin, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, and Sailor Moon. Both sub and dub, the dub had some GREAT music. I mean, Stan Bush! Power of Love is another favorite.
