From some Sci-Fi movie review site: Patlabor: The Movie **1/2 said: In my review of Ghost in the Shell I said that Japanese animation (anime) can be more than a bunch of RoboTech type giant robots manned by wide-eyed Pokemon style kids beating the crap out of each other. You wouldn't think it watching Patlabor: The Movie (incidentally also directed by Mamoru Oshii, who would direct Ghost in the Shell later on). Blade Runner **** said: True, the plot is riddled with more holes than one may bother picking, but the combination of fantastic special effects, intense violence and situations, an uniquely downcast tone and ending makes for a not-to-be-missed film; one which at times is difficult to have been actually produced by Hollywood. So pointless special effects and violence are, "OMG THIS IS AWESOME!" despite the billion plot holes but mecha is, "hurr this is stupid." This is why /m/, for all its stupidity, is still better than most of the internet. |

/m/ may have a lot of bad points, but at least it doesn't combine my two most hated things: people who try to make Blade Runner out to be amazing when it is a terrible, terrible film and people who bash animation because it isn't all deadpan drama. Likewise on the nice avatar Feez. Where is that from anyway? |

How on earth you can say that Patlabor: the movie focuses entirely on the robots I don't know. It's like watching an episode of CSI with robots. Ugh. Okay, you got me, raging at this one. |

You know, I actually agree with some parts of it? But its like you can tell they only watched the first volume before they made up their minds on the whole thing. There's plenty I like about 00... It was a hit and miss review though I can't say for certain having not watched the dub. But it had my eye twitching with rage at some parts. |

Of course it would be one thing if it was just some pretentious ANN douche spouting it, but AMERICANS ACTUALLY BELIEVE THIS. llxwarbirdxll said: >Mecha action filled with grown-up ideas and grown-up politics. >grown-up ideas and grown-up politics. :| That was the part that cracked me up the most. Just the choice of using the term, "grown-up," was pretty terrible, but the whole idea of 00's politics being anything more than the kind of skewed portrayal of real life politics thought up by third rate fiction writers was hysterical. It's just another case of animu fans not being willing to accept that they enjoy a form of entertainment meant largely for kids and teenagers. |

I tend to treat all wing fans with contempt from the offset because they all act exactly as you described them, also believing somehow that wing is the best gundam show around (that is if they haven't migrated to SEED yes...). I haven't met one insightful wing/seed fanboy/girl yet, and it doesn't look like it's going to change any time soon. |

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2010-10-01/gia Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector Rating: 3 The first five minutes of Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector has, on the surface, very little to do with the rest of the episode...at least if you're someone who hasn't watched any previous Super Robot Wars series. Beyond that, however, the episode is mostly comprehensible to a layperson-- the only hard part is in the battle scene that takes up roughly the final third of the episode, because you don't know who's fighting for which side (unless you cheated and looked it up). For the newbie, however, a little cheating plus The Inspector might make for an okay introduction, assuming you don't have access to earlier titles (but do have access to Wikipedia). Sure, the nipples on the female pilot seem to grow in every shot, but hey-- there's a female pilot! And she appears to fight for the good guys! (Ahem, Gundam 00, with your effeminate-but-not-female Tieria and your psycho Nena Trinity.) Another thing that was a nice bump up from Gundam 00 was the ages of the characters. With a couple of exceptions that appeared in the OP or ED, the characters all could legitimately be in their late 20s to 30s, at least by anime standards. I won't profess to be much of a mech afficionado, but both the machines and the characters in the series have strong designs...mostly. One looks like the goofy would-be captain from Irresponsible Captain Tylor, and another sports some pretty ridiculous shades. Also, half of the pilots wear helmets while piloting their mechs and half of them don't, although that may just be my lack of mech familiarity showing. The characters themselves seem reasonably strong without being over-the-top single-trait shells, although the two female pilots who have dialogue in the episode aren't going to win any stereotype-breaking awards. Veteran Super Robot Wars fans probably already know whether or not they want to check this out, but if the idea of a slightly aged-up Gundam-esque political mech drama appeals to you, The Inspector may be worth your time. Just make sure you schedule yourself enough time to pause, Google, and read up a couple of times throughout the episode. :| |

"ther shows I refuse to watch are Hakuoki, K-ON!, Lucky Star, and Victory Gundam." why would somebody with a... *shudders* Gundam Wing avatar refuse to watch the best Gundam series. D: And I don't really get why so many people specify LoGH. It's not even THAT long--certainly shorter than a lot of other shows. Also, I actually expected more people to just say "anything that's mecha". I've actually seen worse communities regarding that. |
