Anyone else thinks it's quite similar to Kaze Hikaru?

I've been reading Kaze Hikaru manga (got to 7th volume since there aren't more on magafox) and the storyline is very similar to Hakuouki's in my opinion. I'm no expert at Japanese history but I suppose that both are to a certain degree historically correct, therefore it's only natural that this part would be the same, however there are othr similarities:
1) A heroine masked as a boy accepted among Shinsengumi
2) The heroine wants to find (Hakuouki)/avenge (Kaze Hikaru) her father
3) Both heroines face more or less the same problems
4) Names of some of the characters are the same

I'm quite happy both series are so similar because I've wished for Kaze Hikaru to become an anime for quite some time and it doesn't seem likely, so Hakuoki kinda makes up for it...

The first three you list, are basic plot elements, not major ones. As I recollect, one is about the supernatural and fantasy elements, while the other is getting trained to be one of the guys, at least from what I've read of the summary.

As for the last one, the names of the characters are the same in Rurouni Kenshin and Peace Maker Kurogane. The characters were real people, beleive it or not.

I quite agree that the two series have very similar elements - I had an impression that the Hakuouki game looks as if Watanabe Taeko didn't approve of a Kaze hikaru otome game, so they made a slightly different plot, and to vanish the ripoff style, they did a fantasy setting in Hakuouki XD
Don't take me seriously ;)

Still, apart from the historical setting and some things that are similar because of the similar plot (girl among lots of bishounens) there are really other features that seem to be the same...
* The girl's father is a doctor - and a Western one, not the Chinese type
* The father is a friend of Matsumoto Ryojun (okay, there weren't many Western doctors at that time, so it's quite logical that every one of them knew Matsumoto in one or another way, but still...)
* Girl joins Shinsengumi - that's not a common theme... If you consider how strict the Shinsengumi rules were, it's logical that authors rather avoid to work with a heroine within the group... (I'm sure there might be tons of doujinshi or hentai that use a similar plot, but among non-hentai stories, only Kaze hikaru dares to use a female Shinsengumi member :) Kido Shinsengumi Moeyo Ken, on the other hand, is a kind of parody, so I don't talk about that :P)
* Ito Kashitaro has basically the same features, with his "omg I'm much more intelligent and much more bishounen than you guys" attitude, plus with his flower-obsession XD

BTW, I'd also love to see a Kaze hikaru anime, but thanks to Hakuouki it is very unlikely now that we'll get any in 10 years or so >__>
