Now don't get me wrong I think the anime is decent but my God an episode can't pass without an apology or a thanks every two minutes. At this point the characters are apologizing for existing while simultaneously thanking the others for every breath they take.

For manga readers does the dialogue improve later on? Or is this kind of a part of the work identity at this point?

You've picked up on the pattern. I just caught up, and yea its a part of the identity. This series tries too hard to be perfect and inoffensive which is not realistic.

A series that tries to be wholesome and please everyone will probably naturally have a high rating. So I get the appeal, but real life is not a fairy tale

It's realistic dialogue. I live in Japan and we say these words literally all the time.

off topic, I love the anime but it has unnecessary high score imo (even tho I currently have it on 10). lots of romance anime back then deserves to have this high score. I feel like scoring here in MAL has gotten lax these past few years. It used be critical back then way too critical even.

You know, what I’ve noticed about the online discussions about this series is that people who complain about this series repeating certain words sure do repeat a certain complaint a lot.

It’s pretty ironic honestly, but I guess that’s par for the course with anime social media (and social media in general).

Its not even that. I feel like the dialogue in general feels very stiff and repetitive. I might be nitpicking here, but for a show to be rated at an 8.9 you cant have this kind of dialogue.

It's arguably the most melodramatic manga I've read and it will remain that way. But let's not pretend like the overexaggerate trope doesn't exist in most romance anime

Low key but I’m fine with it. No ecchi, melodrama instead of fabricated unrealistic conflicts, and characters act as expected. They are mostly relatable perhaps outside of apologizing for existing. Biggest thing boosting this rating has to be animation quality. If the animation was mid and Waguri not being farmed as the cutest thing on earth this probably would be somewhere in the 7’s

I mean, I suppose I could see it being a 7.80-8.20 without all the hyping up and quality animation, but according to manga readers, there's a lot more to its high rating. I think the characters are pretty well-written so far & the plot is definitely not completely unrealistic. The melodrama sits neatly under being over the top and makes for a smooth and emotionally resonant experience, I guess. All in all, it's definitely slightly overhyped but easily above mediocre, if that makes any sense

@H1NAT4 as if you couldn't just explain without apologizing. What's the meaning of an apology if it's used too often?

its not wrong to apologize, but when its used often, its like a bandaid approach. why apply a bandaid when you can just prevent the wound.

do not be sorry, just be better. apologies are worthless if they are used too often. why is this the only show that overuses sorry and thank you? many other shows that are also based in japan don't force it this much

as if an apology can "cure" people's pain so easily. they don't

So I will live with it. The show is a rare gem in its genre and at the top of it in my book. If anyone can point to a better one, feel free to compare. Many of the shows can actually use some Arigato Gomenasai, lol (looking at you, Toradora :D)

@anemoiaism Without quality animation I don't think this anime would even make 7.6-7.7 tbh. MAL users grossly underestimate just how much animation quality can increase the ratings of any anime. Heck, even anime like Frieren, Demon Slayer and AOT might not even make an 8.5 with passable animation.

@ForestWoodSL I agree with you, an anime with beautiful animation will always gain massive pre-air hype but without having a good narrative to back it up it'll just become another "style over substance" flop. This is what happened to Roshidere and its score is even lower than Angel Next Door.

As a romance fan, sincerity outweights visuals so that didn't bother me much because I watched Angel Next Door for its story and feelings - not visuals.

@RaiYou

Do you recommend reading Angel Next Door after the confession?

I dropped the light novel series at volume 5 because I don't see any direction after the confession~

Many readers told me to avoid reading volume 8 onwards, they did not explain much on this, so I need more opinions on this~

For light novels, novels published by bigger publishers (Sneaker Bunko, Dengeki Bunko, Fantasia Bunko, MF Bunko) tend to sell much better than novels published by smaller publishers (HJ Bunko, DX Bunko, Brave Novels)~

For comparison with sales numbers:
Roshidere (published by Sneaker Bunko, one of the largest romance publishers): 5m (highest selling romcom after Full Metal Panic)
Angel Next Door (published by GA Bunko, big publisher but not as big as Sneaker Bunko): 3m
Otonari Asobi (published by DX Bunko, a small publisher that very few LN readers heard of): 100k

I think the anime side is still slower than light novel side when it comes to romance genre~
In anime nowadays, most of the tropes are dense male leads or tsunderes (toxic romance)~
While in light novel side, dense male leads and tsunderes tropes are pretty much dead. Most of the tropes nowadays are gyarus, yanderes, foreign heroines, stepsisters~

I think cohabitation romance is the most popular romance genre nowadays, probably due to Angel Next Door popularity?

@NewestPersonHere Why wouldn't I? Angel Next Door is one of the few series where it will continue after the confession, something we don't usually get nowadays. 3 million copies ain't bad since BGS took 10 years to reach that number~

Unless the sequel manages to rehabilitate Roshidere's reputation it will be dismissed as an incest-bait show than a romance for good. The only positive thing about this anime is beautiful animation, but that can't cover a weak storytelling at all.

Romance novels that continue after confessions are pretty common though~

Let me see how many romance novels I can name.

Gimai Seikatsu. Confessed in volume 7, volume 15 publishing in October.
Introvert Hookup Hiccups. Confessed in volume 5, volume 12 published last week.
Omiai. Confessed in volume 3, ended in volume 8.
Otonari Asobi. Confessed in volume 3, volume 8 confirmed.
Quderella Next Door. Confessed in volume 3, ended in volume 4.

There are some romance novels that start with the couple being together such as
Danshi Da,
Gyaru Stepsister
or Villainess Fiancee

I can still name more romance novels but most of them are not in MAL database~
Looks like Gimai Seikatsu is the only one that has been adapted~

Still considering if I should pick up Angel Next Door again. Should I read volume 5.5? Should I drop after volume 7 as recommended by other romance fans? Hard decision~

Roshidere S2 will likely adapt volume 4-6. I can summarise these 3 volumes in several words.
Volume 4: ECCHI
Volume 5: Masha being cute
Volume 6: AMERICANISATION

I don't really enjoy these 3 volumes other than the fake school shooting in volume 6.
I also started enjoying Roshidere in volume 8 when Alya begins to aggressively seduce Masachika.

The main story of Roshidere is the student council president election, something I still don't care about in volume 10.
I am only reading the novels for Alya's seduction attempts. XP

I think Roshidere sells well because of publisher's marketing.
Kadokawa titles tend to sell much better.
I like British Stepsister more than Roshidere but it is not in MAL database because it is published by a smaller publisher. XD

Follow this reading order and your experience will be better =)

The main story of Roshidere is the student council president election, something I still don't care about in volume 10.

Roshidere is basically a copy of Classroom of The Elite but with romance sprinkled in it then, that kind of melodrama doesn't fit for a show that was meant to be a light romcom...

I think Roshidere sells well because of publisher's marketing.
Kadokawa titles tend to sell much better.

They did a lot of promos, taking into account the LN had high sales and Roshidere was animated by Doga Kobo so expectations were sky-high; but fans were disappointed because the story didn't align with the expectation in the end. I don't know if you care about its rating but the constant decline should reflect how overrated this show is. It's currently rated 7.57 and will drop further unless the show redeems itself in S2.

To the OP: I'm not a manga reader, but it's kind of a part of the work identity indeed. It doesn't really annoy me because it's to portray how polite and respectful the characters are to each other, and I prefer that compared to more toxic dynamics in other series.
