The way Dressrosa is contorting to match the different phases of the battle, beautifully captured with the recap overview map, reminds me of Marineford. The way the landscape distorts, the colosseum being shattered, the palace risen, the body of Pica, headless and standing high, as if an omen that has become ground. It’s awesome stuff, I haven’t seen anybody do this kind of incremental environmental epicness on the level of Oda.

Baby 5 stood near the palace alongside Machvise, Galdius, Dellinger and Lao G and gave us a rundown at all the angles the Don Quixote family are knowingly being approached from. We have Fujitora heading to the foot of the palace, the colosseum contestants on a rampage heading onwards, Kyros heading over, Zoro currently facing Pica, and Luffy and Law coming dangerously close to the palace. Any of which that aren’t already facing executives will probably force their hand. Further, we know Franky has reached the factory and as expected, Senor Pink was there just in time to state in his hard boiled voice that he’s here to finish up his business, a man’s honor with the foe that he’s taken a liking too. At the plateau we heard that Rebecca, Bartolomeo, and half of the Tontatta are going to transport Law’s key to him and the other half of the Tontatta will be heading to Fraland and the factory. Outside of these people, we don’t have direct focus on the likes of Bellamy, or Sabo and Koala.

Zoro gave us a strong showing while facing Pica. He’s constantly mocking him, now calling him a soprano voiced old man, and dealing with Pica as if he’s not an issue at all. There is a bit of seriousness I caught in Zoro, especially after picking at his ear Luffy-style, when his pupil became quite intense before evading an attack. Yet as I said, that was somewhat akin to how disrespectful Luffy can be to his enemies and a few episodes back Zoro told Luffy not to mess with his enemies in ways such as laughing at their voices. Overall his behavior here felt somewhat unexpected to me. I find Zoro can have humor in his conflicts such as telling Kaku he can work in a zoo or moments of arrogance but I would expect him to not give someone weaker than him the time of day, to treat someone worthy with more respect and seriousness, or to simply be indulging in the challenge. A part of me thinks he is trying to get Pica as mad as possible so that he can get the most out of this encounter. He did see how furious Pica can get when mocked and how scared everyone was when it came to that.

Also, I was further thinking about how this fight will go, if Zoro will really kick some soprano-voiced ass or if it would be more even and with all the similarities in this arc to Alabasta, Zoro even suggesting “I will cut stone” like he suggested cutting steel, and facing a swordsman whose entire body can be a hard substance, I think history may somewhat repeat itself. For in Alabasta, I would say Daz was the first fight that Zoro had to push himself. Mihawk is obviously a contender but narratively that fight was such a squash fight with the entire purpose to create the bond between Zoro and Mihawk and to give Zoro a clear sense of purpose. That cut Mihawk gave Zoro then bled into Arlong arc and Zoro still scared Arlong while being a man who was hardly held together and he still destroyed Hachi as if it were nothing. The only reason Zoro struggled in Arlong in my opinion was due to Mihawk. This is why I view Daz as the first true test of Zoro and as suggested, with the similarity of this arc and Alabasta, perhaps that will mean this will be a test to push Zoro to a new level as well.

There were two moments that made me pretty emotional this episode. First I’ll touch on the plateau. As I think it was said in Marineford that Luffy’s strength is uniting those around him, we saw a moment of just that. Viola who had great experience with Sanji and Luffy, and Rebecca who got to know just the kind of guy Luffy is defended pirates and said that these were the people they’d rather have as saviors than the navy which let this happen. Viola suggested the navy could never hear the anger of the people they subjected this fate to, which was to draw the distinction between Fujitora and her idea of the navy. Fujitora addressing this directly and being passionate over never letting such an act be sponsored by the government again. But the part that hit me was the celebration of Usopp once more. The tontatta see Usopp as a literal superhero. They know the truth of the situation but his sacrifice has elevated him in their minds and perhaps it’s yet another nod that Usopp doesn’t need Sogeking anymore. Usopp is the superhero now. Otherwise known as God Usopp aka Usoland. That was sweet.

Probably most interesting would be what Law told Luffy. As expected Corazon was a top executive, we can wager he was of the heart seat which Law later took over. He was also Doflamingo’s younger biological brother. This gives a timeline we can create. When Doflamingo was eight years old, he and Corazon lost their mother, at ten years old he killed his father. Doflamingo probably created and took Corazon into the Don Quixote family as a gesture of taking care of him. They were probably alone and now had a weird relationship with their celestial blood. At some point, Law’s life was saved by Corazon and he adored him. Yet thirteen years ago Corazon was killed by Doflamingo, making two biological family members die by his hand and from that moment onwards, making Law’s one purpose in life to carry out Corazon’s ambition and get revenge. In the flashback we saw a birdcage was up as Corazon died, perhaps he acted against Doflamingo’s horrors, and we know Vergo gave Law a serious beating so we may be able to place that after the events of Corazon’s death. I take it Law in that moment realized how weak he was and rather than being rash and leading into a pointless death, he overtook the heart seat of Corazon and named his own pirates after him while trying to get enough power and the right situation to properly strike Doflamingo.

The loyalty of the Don Quixote family is quite messy now. Doflamingo said his only family was the one created. He lets his executives go without punishment even if their actions result in the destruction of ten years of work. There seems to be an agreement that if they ought to die for the family, they will die for the family, but Doflamingo does seem to genuinely care about them. And his biological brother was once part of it. Interestingly, I think we can even see with Law’s betrayal that there’s some care still involved. Doflamingo referred to Law like a younger brother, even after betraying Doflamingo overtly he did not kill him and he placed him on the heart seat, the heart seat which Buffalo told Law was still being held for him. Further, if we think back to Vergo and Law’s meeting in Punk Hazard, Vergo told Law that if he caused any harm to them “he’d be dead by now”. There was a sense that until it was clear that Law was trying to kill Doflamingo, that he was being left alive. There’s a huge question now of what Corazon did to Doflamingo.

And as I never did clarify, the emotional aspect of this scene for me was seeing Law decide that if they were committed to killing Doffy directly, that he’d be in a sense, grateful. He’d be able to get what he always wanted. Further, Luffy hearing that Doflamingo not only killed his nakama, but killed his biological brother of whomst they were alone together in this world and became pirates must hit him hard. He’d do anything to keep Ace alive and Doflamingo chose to kill Corazon. Yet, I can’t imagine Doflamingo was happy to do that… So much intrigue.. Great episode.

This is more of a build-up episode compared to the previous ones which were already building up to Luffy's big fight against Doflamingo but I'm really excited about the upcoming fights.

It's great to see more and more people see the Straw Hats Pirates as heroes and I'm looking forward to knowing more about Trafalgar's past.

A steady episode of moving everyone around after the initial face-off with Pica. I'm guessing Zoro will be stuck stalling for some time before we get a dedicated episode for him taking Pica down. I was expecting a flashback to start after Law revealed his personal beef with Doflamingo, but gad that was put on the back-burner for now. Having a flashback while we're eager to see everyone close in would put quite a damper on an already slower arc.

The next episode title has my frustrations with Fujitora growing. He says one thing, but does another. Viola had the whoe speech about trusting the Strawhats as the Navy and World Government were the ones who allowed Doflamingo to keep his reign over Dressrosa for years while keeping their hearing selective. But Fijitora is supposed to be different. It's the stereotype of the blind character, but he's already mentioned that he hears the anger of the citizens right now. Yet instead of taking on the Doflamingo forces and giving the pirate groups a wide berth under the guise of not thinning his manpower...he still insists on a situation where Sabo has to face him as a stalling measure.

Everyone getting set up for the second half the arc.

The one thing I am excited for is the Law flashbacks. Now that we know law mentor? Was flamingo little brother. We now know why this was so personal. Idk when they will come, but when they do it will be peak.
