Dear ladies and gents,
Welcome back to FG Interviews! today i am joined by a professional translator and aspiring visual novelist, everyone please welcome: Rajidae! it's great to have you here. also thank you everyone for participating and sending in their questions!
Without further ado Enjoy the show and thank you! @Rajidae
Before we get to the questions, can you tell us a bit about yourself? for the users who may not be as familiar with you.
Rajidae: For those who don't know me, hi, I'm Rajidae and I'm a 20 y/o woman hailing from the land of Santa Claus and sauna. My hobbies are learning languages, writing, and playing Visual Novels :) I'm an introvert but I love extroverts sm. I also love my dog, she's a 6yo Bernese and a literal angel. Nice to meet you!
1. Unaniu: what got you into anime?
I was visiting my childhood friend, and her older sister introduced me to Attack on Titan. I was about 12 at the time, but I got super hooked. I remember rambling about the plot to my dad and I was SO excited :p Apparently it was the most excited I had ever gotten about something like that
2. Karioka-: What's your favourite food?
Rajidae: My favorite food is chicken curry! Esp. with honey sauce.
3. Frebby: What's the most beautiful place you've ever visited?
Rajidae: Probably Greece. I travelled abroad with my mom a lot when I was young, but I vividly remember the blue skies and the beach, it was gorgeous.
4. DanzFcc: If you were asked by a complete anime novice about what anime to watch/try out first, what would you recommend?
Rajidae: Depends on what kind of person they are. If they like lighthearted stuff, I'd recommend Spy x Family, Fruits Basket, or K-On. If they like the more gruesome stuff, I'd go with Attack on Titan, Death Note, or Parasyte.
5. OshieteOshiete1: What are your top 5 favorite songs and artists?
Rajidae:
Top 5 songs
1. Misekai - Uta wo Oshiete kureta Anata e
2. Misekai - Dawn Diver
3. Eason Chan - Lone Warrior
4. Ye Li & Yuan She - Burial of Immortals
5. Yang Zhe - Old Love in Tamsui
Top 5 artists
1. Misekai
2. Honeyworks
3. Hiroyuki Sawano
4. Gareth Coker
5. Yorushika
6. Nigokugeta; Rajidawg What's your favourite game or games ye games name a bunch!? & 7. tinshard: Did you play Subnautica? If yes, did you like it? (Asking because of the location)
Rajidae: It's sooo hard to pick my FAVORITE favorite... but if I really had to, I'd say Disco Elysium.
I'm really into reading big amounts of text (that's literally my job) and analyzing both characters dynamics & mysteries, so it's not surprising that an RPG detective game with an extremely well-written duo would climb up to take the spot as my #1 fave. I played it for 10 hours a day and finished it in less than a week after getting properly into it. It's that good. The mechanics are engaging, the mystery is mysterious, and there are funny af moments that got me gaping at my screen at times lol. Harry being the chaotic and horrendous MC that he is, also helped give me a broader perspective on life. I would NEVER do the things this man does... and that's what made it so fun to play as him. Also, we're both superstar cops ✨
Honorary mentions to Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Pathologic 2, The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, and all the random Visual Novels I've played during the past year. I'm SO looking forward to REANIMAL & Subnautica 2 to maybe trump DE as my favorite game. 2025 will be the year of gaming fr fr
Also yea Subnautica used to be my favorite which is why I still have the location as that and it'll stay so forever probs!
8. Minezz: How did you create your username "Rajidae" and what does it mean if it has a meaning?
Rajidae: To the biology enthusiasts out there, you might know this, but -dae is a common suffix attached to animals! In this case, "Rajidae" refers to skates :) I'm a huge marine biology fan myself and I wanted a name that had to do with sea creatures, and it sounds nice.
9. KittenCuddler: How many different cats do you pet in an average month?
Rajidae: 0, sadly!! But I pet about 4 dogs every few months when I go visit my parents :(
10. zzz: what inspired you to start learning different languages?
Rajidae: Most often my motivation comes from being inspired by someone around me. I'm a HUGE fan of Kanae from Nijisanji, he's one of my biggest role models and I used to watch Chronoir clips w/ English subs a lot. I wanted to understand the words he was speaking, and so I started studying Japanese as my first foreign language, and that's the gist of it. But tbh the curiosity has always been there. I'm inquisitive by nature, and made attempts to learn when I was as young as 14 (2 years after I started watching anime). Back then I didn't have the resources to continue, but getting to know Kanae was the thing that sort of 'pushed me' over that edge and made me serious about language learning :)
But yeah, whenever I used to ask myself "why am I doing this again lol" I always fell back on remembering the people who've inspired me, and all the potential people I'll be able to connect with in the future in their native language. I habitually learn the languages of my close friends/partners/etc. and atp it's a lifestyle lol. I couldn't imagine a me who isn't constantly trying to learn.
11. Alriven: What is it like to be an "𝙸𝙽𝙵𝙿 5w4 sx/sp" person?
Rajidae: Full of contradictions lol. I've studied typology as a hobby, and the way I see it, your personality type is your cognitive functions and your enneagram is where your values lie. It's gonna sound confusing to anyone who isn't into typology but I urge everyone to look into it, it's genuinely interesting and can help you understand people a lot more and why they act the way they do/what their motivations might be
An INFP has the cognitive functions of Fi-Ne-Si-Te, and I've grown to like being a Fi-dominant quite a lot; I go deep into people's values, feelings, and what is right for me, and I repeat that one-on-one process with everyone as opposed to Fe that takes everyone's feelings into account as one, more general concept with a broader approach. My emotional intelligence is pretty good and sometimes I can be pretty guru-like in my approach to life lol.
Ne-Si as 2nd-3rd function kinda sucks ngl because Si in 3rd place made me ruminate way too much when I was a teenager lol. But I wouldn't be able to write the stories I'm writing in the same way if I didn't have Ne, that sees a web of possibilities built on past information (Si) and picks the best one, as opposed to Ni that visualizes a singular goal based on present sensory information (Se) available. Si tertiary/3rd function is really tricky, and it really takes time to see its strengths fully. I can really see it in the way I write, when I see something and go "wow! this is cool, but imagine if they'd done X or Y with it! i'm gonna use this version in my story!" and then I just build on it until it becomes its own thing entirely.
Te inferior/4th place makes me stubborn af. It's what allowed me to go "you know what, I will simply change careers and study languages day in day out and no one can stop me. adios" @ my old school. I'm still really bad at using Te in a healthy manner, but that's like the inf function's whole thing, maybe I'll get it someday lol. I'd like to get better at not dismissing things so quickly based on my feelings (Fi) and applying my knowledge in practice instead of accumulating and hoarding it like my life depends on it :p
For someone who doesn't know enneagrams, this is a good link for beginners -> https://www.beyondyourtype.co/blog/enneagram-subtypes-explained <- it gives you the basic idea of what the 9 enneagrams are all about.
People say that INFPs can't be E5 because E5s aren't emotional, but I'm just going based off what I align with the best imo. I definitely relate to the tendency to withdraw & the core desire of gaining knowledge and minimizing needs as a way to cope with demands.... or something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
12. Karioka-: What's the coolest thing you've done this year?
Rajidae: The coolest thing I've done is start speaking on VRChat and getting rid of my fear of making mistakes. It's been only a week but I legitimately feel like I solved the puzzle that is life :p
13. OshieteOshiete1: What made you interested in vocaloid?
Rajidae: I always strive to do things by myself when it comes to art if I can help it, and I was wondering if I could make some music for my personal project~ It really bugs me when I can't fulfill my vision in the exact way I'm imagining it lol, I'm such a critical artist.
14. The Team: Do you watch dubbed anime in any other languages?
Rajidae: No, unless you count watching Moomins dubbed in Finnish
15. anime: which language is the most pleasant to your ears, and what are some of your favourite words for that language?
Rajidae: I love this question! The answer is without a question Mandarin; the reason I started studying it in the first place is because I completely fell in love with the sound of it the first time I watched Link Click (it was my first time hearing Mandarin being spoken as well)
Some words that immediately come to mind are 什麽 (shénmé/what),害羞 (hàixiū/shy),& 狐狸(húlí/fox)
16. Minezz: If you could live in any fictional world, which one would you choose. Why?
Rajidae: WITCH HAT ATELIER. I would legit give anything. I'm so obsessed with the books. I love love LOVE the worldbuilding sm.
17. Frebby: Do you enjoy rain or snow?
Rajidae: They're ok. I think it's a shame when it's raining/snowing really hard and I can't go out shopping, but rain sometimes sets the fuzzy calm mood you need every now and then.
18. Starflutter: Do you have any Japanese studying tips? I really admire your ability to get to the level you have!
Rajidae: Oh boy do I have tips for studying Japanese. I'll gladly help you out!
I only recently learned that this isn't common knowledge for everyone, but the gist of learning any language is to focus on INPUT. Input being listening, reading, taking IN the information as opposed to speaking or writing, aka. producing information. If you don't focus on input, you will NOT become fluent, ever.
Japanese especially might seem challenging at first with different reading systems, but for beginners, just memorize the hiragana and katakana! That's your first priority!
For RESOURCES, you should have it divided into active learning and passive learning.
Active learning resources are for vocab/grammar/kanji, where you're actively making the effort to learn new things. That's where you'll be spending most of your beginner days. This is usually a website or an app, personally I use Renshuu
Passive learning resources are for listening/reading, where you're paying attention but don't have to be at 100% power. That's where you focus on re-enforcing previously learned things, and as you move towards the intermediate level, it starts taking up more of your study time the more you can handle it. The reason why it's secondary when you're starting out is so you can build a base of knowledge and won't get overwhelmed by the flood of new information!
You can use your environment itself as a resource by simply putting yourself in situations where you'll hear a lot of spoken Japanese (and if you do that that's fantastic, good on you) but for beginners I'd recommend a graded reader like Satori Reader - it'll give you narrated stories that are only slightly harder than your current level. That's how you slowly climb your way up the more time you put into it. But also make sure to get lots and lots of exposure to native Japanese!
I'm writing more of a guide here lmao, I'd love to help anyone who's struggling with learning languages and if you're in a pinch don't hesitate to DM/comment. But for simple tips I'd say:
- Find a beginner-friendly space (VRChat is a good one, there's lots of beginners just like you and language exchange worlds for JP-ENG. JP people looking to learn English will appreciate you for being there, even if you can't form a sentence to save your life)
- You're never ready. Just go for it.
- If you're not understood, don't give up, try to rephrase what you said and use everything you have at your disposal
- Input, input, INPUT, GETTING EXPOSURE IS 70% OF LEARNING A LANGUAGE GO GET THAT INPUT
- How to get the motivation to immerse yourself and get that exposure? MAKE LEARNING FUN. Watch anime. Watch streamers. Watch dramas. Talk to people. Listen to songs and try learning the lyrics. Anything, as long as YOU enjoy it.
- Learning a language is a mindset, not a decision. It's being open to learning, being curious, willingness to completely immerse yourself in your TL's culture, willingness to make mistakes
- Finding cool people like myself to have as language exchange partners 👉👈
19. OshieteOshiete1: How much merch do you own?
Rajidae: None! I don't have money for merch and I don't really need it tbh. Does manga count as merch? I have a couple of manga series as physical copies (WHA & TBHK) but that's about it
20. traed: What does your profile mean by aspiring visual novelist? Do you have any projects currently being worked on or completed any or just want to in future?
Rajidae: I'm currently working on a VN! It's a passion project that I've been writing since Apr 2024, one of the reasons I'm taking a semi-break is so I can work on it more. The story will never ever be finished because every time I'm done something else pops up lol, but I am getting to the point where I'm commissioning artists and looking to maybe hire someone(s) to draw art for it if possible.
I'm probs gonna make a blog for it in the near future, I put a deadline of 6 months to finish writing the first part, excluding cutscenes etc. Check out my profile in the near future for updates 👀👀👀
Are there any final words you'd like to say to everyone?
Rajidae: No final words, except wow this was tiring lol. I didn't expect to go on this many rambles. ty to everyone for asking questions and ty viraat for having me!
