Yes, I'm intentionally not putting any relevant info in the title because I know a lot of people tend to only answer the title.

I'll try to keep this short and word this very carefully. The ongoing debate about character ages has made me remember a specific type of person. Those are the people I've seen who think it's wrong for an adult to cosplay as a younger character.

My question here is this; Are any of you of the same mindset? And I mean actual characters, not just someone who likes to dress up as a toddler or something...

as long as like it isnt done in some weird sexual way or done to try and look younger to groom someone or something like that then i dont see what the problem is? its putting on a costume, something people do for characters of any sort not just anime. maybe the mindset might stem from some of those underage characters being too sexualized in the first place, so seeing someone walk around like that might give off some sus impressions or contribute to normalizing things that should definitely not be normal...

Being concerned about fictional ages in cosplaying is incredibly pointless. Same with the idea that as you age you no longer can find AoC girls hot anymore. The only time age becomes an issue is if it goes under your countries AoC irl.

@AnimeIsAMistake7 I think it's a mix of both this and just thinking it's weird because of a character's age in general. That poses another question...If we're talking about a character who's usual outfit is already revealing; would it not be better for an adult to wear it? I'd personally prefer that over the alternative.

Also, I know this isn't just an anime thing, I just figured it'd get more views here. The mods can move it if they see fit.

You're saying that people think that it's wrong for adults to cosplay as fictional characters that are younger than themselves? Am I getting this right?

I don't see what's wrong with that. It's just cosplay.

Even if it's done with sexual intention, that doesn't matter. I will say it again; fetish doesn't matter, consent does. The cosplayer is an adult so they can give legal consent. Doesn't matter what fetish the cosplay caters to. Nor does it matter the age of the character represented as they are not involved in the act, let alone real to begin with.

Unless I'm wrong about what you're asking? Just seems so outlandish that people would get upset over such a thing. But then again people exist who will get upset over literally anything.

@wizdom224 You're spot on with what I'm saying. And to reiterate a response to someone a few post up, when the alternative is an underage person dressing up as some of these characters, I don't get why anyone would take issue with this.

I'd argue something like cosplay is much different since dressing in costume in and of itself isn't inherently sexual. Its not really frowned upon much even outside of the community and people generally won't assume dressing up in costume of a character is because you are attracted to them, they would just think you like that character first and foremost.

I don't see the inherent problem in it. I mean, is it wrong for people to dress up like Spider-Man? Or Velma and Daphne from the Scooby Doo gang? And speaking of those characters, I've seen quite a few adult women sexualizing Velma and Daphne through their cosplays. Even though they're considered "meddling kids." But I don't see people making an uproar about it or stopping the flow of that type of content.

I mean the only thing I can say is that anyone who thinks its automatically bad is not making judgements based on reality. Like lets say some adult cosplays as Ash (Satoshi) from Pokemon, (I think he is technically like 14 or something) I mean really, what could possibly be the issue with that? Like I seriously can't even think of how that is in of itself bad. I mean the guy put on a funny hat a pretty normal vest, shirt and pants and someone is getting upset over that? Are we considering the possibility that the upset person is insane?

Now to give the devil his due, If you dress up like an actual toddler, with like a pacifier and pampers and nothing else, that is weird af. But I think this goes beyond "cosplaying as a young character", Its approaching the limits of what is even acceptable to wear in public, and you have to ask yourself what is the intention behind this cosplay? Is this a big joke to make people uncomfortable and "the joke is on them" if they do, or is the cosplayer not of sound mind? But anyway, this is an extreme case and you couldn't possibly equate this to the satoshi cosplay.

But what’s the argument they use to say that it’s 'wrong'?

NO it's not wrong to cosplay as a character who's younger or older or a different gender or a different race than you, it's called cosplay for a reason, you are pretending to be a character, you are playing pretend, and so long as you have the self awareness to understand you are playing pretend and that you are not actually that character there is nothing wrong with it

In my world, the only requirement for cosplay is to actually look cool. And maybe half of real cosplay I have seen was like:
- Hey, nice costume! Are you Eric Cartman?
- No, bitch! I'm Asuka Langley.

Age gap makes it even worse, because face and body proportion change over time (everyone who tried to draw or sculp a real child for the first time, after mastering adults depiction, should relate, haha). Now, multiply that by originally unrealistic anime looks...

So, I think it's just common sense not to cosplay 14yo girl. I personally would never dare to cosplay someone looking younger than, say, Vash or Grell. Aesthetics above accuracy or substance.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
