A two-part compilation movie for the Girls Band Cry anime series was announced at the Togenashi Togeari 2nd One-Man Live "Rinne no Kotowari" concert on Friday.

The original television anime aired in 13 episodes in Spring 2024. Streaming platform Catchplay+ simulcast the anime in both Indonesian and English subtitles beginning May 31. Toei Animation released the anime with English subtitles on Fandango at Home, Microsoft Store, Hoopla, and Amazon Prime Video on August 13.

Kazuo Sakai (Love Live! Sunshine!!) helmed the anime at Toei Animation, with Jukki Hanada (Hibike! Euphonium) in charge of the series composition. Nari Teshima (Holo no Graffiti) designed the characters and Yuusuke Tanaka composed the music.

Synopsis
Everyone yearns to find their true purpose in life. This is also true for Nina Iseri, a 17-year-old girl looking to enroll in a good university, but the world always seems to work against her. On her very first day in Tokyo, she gets lost, ignored, and locked out of her new apartment. However, an unexpected opportunity arises when Nina meets Momoka Kawaragi, one of her favorite guitarists.

After Nina joins Momoka for a street performance, Momoka decides they should start a band together. While Nina initially hesitates, her determination grows as they start acquiring more bandmates—the beautiful drummer Subaru Awa, the aloof keyboardist Tomo Ebizuka, and the intelligent bassist Rupa. The five girls face challenges both in the music industry and within themselves, but their shared passion for music never lets them give up on their dreams. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

@RobertBobert I'm pretty sure they'll be adding new scenes to them, seeing as characters like Rupa didn't get an episode to focus solely on them. So just stay optimistic, lol.

Both BanG Dream! It's MyGO and Bocchi the Rock got the same two-part compilation movie. And, both of them also have the same amount of the episode as Girls Band Cry.

@AkeZZZ And did this have any actual practical meaning other than “others did it too”?

@RobertBobert
It means that it's possible for a 12-13 episodes TV series anime to have 2-part complimentary films.

From your question: Two recap films at once? For one series of 12-13 episodes?
It was like you asked it's impossible for a 12-13 episodes TV series anime to receive 2-part complimentary films. That's why I gave you some examples of the same things.

@AkeZZZ Anything is possible if you have the will. I'm wondering if it makes sense to split the recap into two films at once, since I usually don't watch them.

@RobertBobert these aren't recaps. They're the same thing all over again but in movie format.

@mshfqtny Just the same material, but cut into two films for theatrical release? Without deleting anything and without “remember how cool we went to the beach back then”?

Are you fucking kidding me, TOEI? Now they decided to make an compilation film of this shitty ass anime?

The anime was a fucking disaster in every way imaginable. And now they want to milk this garbage to death, just like how WIT Studio milked the fuck out of Kizuna No Allele?

And this is why everyone hates TOEI Animation, and most certainly why Dragon Ball Super will never return. As long as TOEI keeps making garbage after garbage for the sake of money, they will stop putting all time and efforts into making an actual GOOD anime.

It's no wonder why the company is becoming the CAPCOM of anime.

I get what you mean but in the case of DBS S2, it's not that they don't want to made but licence right for the series are currently a huge mess to be deal with, because there are two companies (Shueisha and a dude who self-proclaimed Toriyama's best friend) selfishly fighting over who should own the series just so one of them could milk DB money as much as they can (And this mess begins back when Toriyama was still alive and working on Super Hero movie).

@Diogo_Gomes_1995 have you watched the TV Series? I dont think compilation/Recap Movie for GBC is necessary (if they dont stream/show it in other countries at least), but honestely i think you have not watched the show if you say its trash or shitty. This Show was the best show in his whole season when its aired, the story and characters are rly good written, the Animations are top tier and the songs are insane, also the comedy aspects were great too.

What exactly was shit in this show for you? dont get that comment.

@Hikaze91 I have watched 5 episodes. And those 5 episodes are enough to make me fisically ill, to the point of finishing it. I don't care how many episodes i'm missing. Those 5 graining and vomiting inducing episodes are enough to stop watching it all together, then there's no reason to continue.

The show fucking sucks in every way, imaginable. The story is abysmal, the animation makes even EX-ARM look tonerable to look at, the characters are some of the most obnoxious, cringy, and unbearable characters to watch, and the songs just makes my ears bleed.

There's no way in hell that you're gonna convince me that this show was anywhere "good". Let alone on the same level as Bocchi The Rock!!. Either you were watching the anime blindfully, or you're just plain retarded. No questions asked.

> sucks in every way, imaginable. The story is abysmal,

https://news.yahoo.co.jp/expert/articles/e29077eaa30ceaaeaa7ea3b8e9ca34481903c496

The above Yahoo article, about real-life GBC band Togenashi Togeari's recent Citta venue concert, is unreachable outside of Japan but I've read it via proxy. It literally says GBC anime mopped the floor with Daemon Slayer (!) regarding popularity, reviews and disc / merch sales. BTW, the Citta venue mentioned has a capacity of 1300 ppl but 30,000 (!) otaku applied for the tickets lottery. Thus there will be a 5th concert held in an 5000 capacity venue to ease demand.

GBC / Garukura anime still has insane popularity throughout Asia even 6 months after airing, Thailand even got it dubbed already. Fanart is constantly being created, a lot of them in China. The GBC character designer's semi-official booklet created for C104 resulted in the longest ever buyer's queue (300+ meters) observed in the history of Comiket, which is Japan's ComicCon, only larger. GBC smartphone game has been announced and TogeToge has an upcoming collab with the big brand BangDream franchise.

With all this success, GBC can hardly suck or be abysmal...

> obnoxious, cringy, and unbearable characters to watch

GBC is a story about a rock band, not pop/idols. Thus members are, per definition, angry at themselves, each other and the world in general and rebels without a cause. (Hitori "Bocchi" Gotoh herself said what would become of rock music if it was performed by the happy, lucky and functional members of society?)

> the songs just makes my ears bleed

Rock hasn't been mainstream in the West for ~20 years and our ears are conditioned to pop-music outright manufactured for easy consumption over FM / net radio. In contrast, rock remains a strong subculture in Japan and GBC songs are similar to some early 2000s j-rock hits, with strong reliance on keyboard track and a hint of Vocaloid style.

In my opinion the OP, ED and ep. 1, 3, 5, 7 songs are all excellent but TogeToge's ep. 11 and 13 songs felt toothless. Cycle of Sorrow, the singular New Diamond Dust band song we heard in the anime (ep.11), was also excellent, though heavily produced since they were set onto the "idol" track by the label agency.

@Tacsk0 I don't care how popular this shitty anime is or how much everybody loves it. If i say the anime sucks, IT FUCKING SUCKS AND I'M RIGHT. No questions.

Just because the anime is more popular than the other, it doesn't mean it's good. Look at Evangelion for example. It was popular at the time, but the anime fucking sucks.

> If i say the anime sucks, IT FUCKING SUCKS AND I'M RIGHT.

There was a 5-page interview in Kodansha Friday with the lead producer of GBC. He said Toei studio has this tradition: whenever a new episode of an anime is completed, it's first shown in-house and anybody in the company can come to watch. Pattern is always the same: 1st ep of any new anime has full room but people start to vane for subsequent eps: some not interested in the story / genre, some seasoned enough to have seen all visual tricks and plot twists employed. For Garukura it was different: first ep full house, 2nd fuller and then physically couldn't cram more ppl into the room. That is, actual anime industry professionals found GBC mesmerizing and revolutionary from day 1! Compared to that, your entitled layman opinion holds little weight.

Another thing is this new article about anime industry having a software crisis and Sony offering to come to their rescue (to replace a 2D cell-coloring and in-betweening application a 3rd party vendor refuses to sell any more). On the other hand, all are afraid of Sony's foreseeable abuse of monopoly and general villainity. Now consider that GBC was made by Toei entirely using in-house developed 3D CGI motion capture and rendering environment. Thus their position in the anime industry has become very strong thanks to GBC, it's like having indigenously developed stealth warplane tech. Toei could even afford to say no to GBC streaming for Crunchyroll, the market-leading service owned by Sony group.

The way you're saying that sounds like as if Toei was some no name studio that nobody is familiar with until GBC became a thing, when they have always been a big name studio even before GBC existed lol
