I've not read the LN but from my own experience, she was just there to drive the plot with her identity and ability. However, part 2 is just as good if not better in the entire 86(anime).

Part 1 was mainly about the tragic fate of 86s. And within that living hell, it also touches on the topic of what "salvation" means to them. The epicness of part 1 stems from witnessing their struggle throughout and finally coming to their destination. (Especially when it is constantly contrasted with Milena's perspective.) Therefore, if part 1 were said to be climbing the Himalayas, part 2'd be where you've finally reached the peak.

What comes after all the bloodshed is then further discussed in part 2. It brings out the irony that:

Despite 86 had been the fate they wanted to escape for their entire life, it is only when they obtained salvation in the form of living in a peaceful country, do they have time to think about the meaning of their life - not allowing themselves to selfishly enjoy the peaceful life brought about by countless deceased comrades and to choose their own demise as they fight til their last breathe.

Part 2 is beautiful because it doesn't mean that they're wasting their life going into battle field again. Instead, they've learnt to cherish their life and they won't allow themselves to die in a fight so easily unless they decide that's it.

So the reunion feels like a answer to Milena calling not to leave her behind. Keep fighting forward doesn't mean they're giving up their life and leave Milena all alone. And when the scene hits, everything gets concluded and imo creates a very memorable moment.

(My analysis and opinion could just be complete bs, but I really love the series.)

I’d say the dialogue being way overbearing killed it more. It has too much in it that’s meant to be overly meaningful. Meaningful moments must be earned.

And the direction emphasizing those meaningful moments is just further injury really. It just feels even more overblown. Re:Zero second season has the exact same problem.

Lol, Ive seen a lot of Mecha and this one was basically a combination of all of them but no part of it was done as well. The characters were so cheesy other than Reaper, it was hard to finish part 1 for me. Part 2 at least Reaper was the main focus more

I completely agree. Part 2 ditched Lena, who was by far the best character in Part 1. I absolutely loved Part 1, but Part 2 just felt so repetitive and slow. I don’t care about seeing these characters that I barely know anything about fighting some robots.

I want to see Lena build her relationship with them…

Part 2 was a massive letdown and probably the biggest drop off for a second season I’ve seen since The Promised Neverland.

@SSRSyt ending of part 2 was the only thing that saved the trainwreck of a season imo.

The pacing went way off and it just completely failed to hold my interest. Turned into too much of a typical action-shounen with minimal investment into character depth (very deceptively deep, shile being very surface level in reality).

I thought they just focused way too much on fight scenes for Part 2. But the last episode was great. Just a shame we had to sit through the rest of Part 2 to get there…

Just finished the second part of season one, and wow, it seems like I'm majorly in the minority, because I enjoyed it more than part one in pretty much every conceivable area. Of course, one of the major reasons I disliked part one to the extent that I did, was the character of Lena. I guess with part two only featuring her rarely, it was already on the right track with me. But yeah, generally, the show coped much better with a smaller cast of our core 86, and it seemed to do a much better job of making me actually feel attached to them.

I never thought I'd say it after watching part one, but, honestly, I really want a season two.
