Makoto Shinkai, the critically acclaimed anime writer and director of films like Your Name, Weathering with You and Suzume, has praised the currently top-rated anime rom-com of summer 2024. He also talked about the comparisons being made between the show and his own work.

For the fifth anniversary of the Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro in Tokyo, Japan, a one-week-only screening of Weathering with You was held, as the film’s original release date coincided with the theater’s opening in 2019. Shinkai was present for a special talk show event on July 20, 2024, where he took questions from audience members. Among the many questions asked about his career in animation, Shinkai acknowledged the favorable comparison being made of his work to Too Many Losing Heroines!, a harem-esque anime comedy that’s becoming one of the most popular titles of the Summer 2024 anime season. An X (formerly Twitter) user noted what Shinkai said at the event. One fan asked Shinkai about a scene in Too Many Losing Heroines! where Anna Yanami -- who had her romantic feelings rejected by a boy she had a crush on -- takes a straw that he just used for his drink and sips from it out of desperation when he’s gone. The attendee described the scene as "Shinkai-like." In response, Shinkai said, "I don't know about that *laughs*, but I thought it was a good scene. I think scenes that give a sense of fetishism and eroticism in general, are necessary. I still include them in my work despite facing opposition *laughs*. The latest one was having Suzume Iwato sit on Souta Munakata as a chair. I think such scenes are wonderful."

I did think a lot of the music was very similar to RADWIMPS' compositions in his movies.

On the surface, this show seemed to be another one of those shows that hooks you by the premise, but ends up completely mid and uninventive, but it's actually so much better than I expected.

Straw scene was cringe but hilarious when she got exposed. Can't say the same about "Suzume Iwato sit on Souta Munakata as a chair" scene from Suzume, lol.

The animation of it does give those high budget vibes. Agreed on it being one of the top seasonal.

I mean I get goosebumps just remembering this isn't a movie.

Every aspect of the anime is movie quality. Direction, sound design, animation, voice actors, even the pacing and comedy.

I think this is peak romcom.
