Basically Frieren got me into the mood for fantasy anime (seriously, I just fell in love with it), and then I watched ReZero's Season 2, which only continued the mood. Unfortunately Frieren now will be a week by week thing for me so I need some other good fantasy anime to bingle.

I usually only watch slice of life stuff, so I not only have no knowledge about fantasy anime, I also am looking for something that would be closer to Frieren (or even ReZero), where it's more character driven and world building driven than about action or fight scenes or any of all of that.

Would you happen to have any recommendations for what I can watch to scratch this itch? I have seen Konosuba 1 and 2 already, and I have seen the first season of Danmachi, so I am covered on those fronts (and it goes without saying but saying it anyway lol, seen ReZero S1 too). Thank you! :)

P.S.: cute waifus are always a bonus in getting me interested in an anime too

P.P.S: HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! Hopefully this is the best year of your lives :D

Whilst not being as good, it might scratch that itch.
Adventure, fantasy, and has similar art style

This is a tough one! Immediate thought:”watch lord of the rings” cause that’s the vibe I get from frieren. But here are some ok candidates:
Log horizon
That time I got reincarnated as a slime
Kakuriyo
The ice guy and his cool female colleague since you’re a fan of slice of life as well ⭐️

Enjoy!

Character driven anime in a fantasy setting with good world building?
Sounds like Mushoku Tensei to me, though you also gotta be fine with the inclusion of some sexual themes on the more "controversial" side. If you are, Mushoku Tensei fits perfectly.

I feel that Frieren has the same vibes as Slayers or a little less like Record of Lodoss War. They have already mentioned Sahaite no Paladin that it could also be.
Mushoku Tensei has another vibe for me... Re:Zero style could be TenSura or Overlord also mentioned before.

I would encourage you to watch Mushoku tensei Jobless-reincarnation. It is really character focused and have amazing worldbuilding! It is my favorite anime and after what you're describing from what you wanna see, it fits perfectly. I hope you enjoy it, if you give it a try. And as you said there is definitely some waifus as well.

(Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina) is a good one for you, It follows a traveling witch in her journey. there's a lot of similar elements between it and Frieren. Elaina is a witch going on a journey following the acts of a witch in novels she read as a child. The episodes are more monster of the week, but each story is interesting.

(Record of Lodoss War) is the original Anime Elf, Deedlit is the mold the rest are based on. the show was based on a real play DND game and was very popular serialized in a magazine. The main character is Parn, a human hero who wants to adventure to follow in his father's footsteps. it has really cool world building.

(Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit) is also more character driven. It's less fantasy than the other two and focuses more on fighting than magic, but has great world building and lore. Balsa, a spearwielding mercenary, is hired to protect the life of a young prince "cursed" by a water demon from his own father's assassins. It's really focused on the bonds formed by family and has a bit of mystery to solve.

(In the Land of Leadale) an isekai following a terminally ill girl who wakes up in the body of her game avatar in a game world 200 years in the future from what she played. she's overpowered and forms close bonds while trying to figure out what happened to put her in the game world.

(I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level) another isekai, and also a solid choice. an overworked office employee dies and is reincarnated into a fantasy world by a goddess. she spends the next 300 years living a slow life and killing slimes for basic income, which, as the title says, maxes out her level. This gets out, and lots of people flock to her and eventually form a big happy family.

I hope this is helpful!

I really don't think there is anything like it tbh, there are things with similar fantasy tropes and solve of life things but nothing really that combines then like Frieren.
Mushishi might be worth checking out. It's more Japanese mythology and not really character driven but it has a similar chill sorta vibe.

Where is your pfp from BTW? She is cute.

this show is mostly a mash up of "violet evergarden" and "to your eternity" if you ever not seen any of those two titles i recomend it.. they both are beautiful as frieren.. as for slowburner and is more in the slice of life side but still capture passage of time.. "mushi" and " kino's journey" ( both 2000's and rework) are good titles..

Probably others already recommended them but when I started to watch Sousou no Frieren I thought it was a combination of "Super Cub" and "Majo no Tabitabi", so, watch them!! they're pretty good imho (though the first one isn't a fantasy anime but is one of the most wholesome and chill animes I've seen so far, love it!!).

Also Happy New Year!! 🎉🎉💙

its a pretty traditional fantasy series so most anime in the genre should work for you and with you being new to the medium there should be plenty for you to sift through. ones i havent seen listed here yet are parallel world pharmacy, drugstore in another world, campfire cooking in another world. by the grace of the gods, the girl from the other side, banished from the heros party, somali and the forest spirit, ascendance of a book worm, and bofuri

Ancient magus bride? Mushishi might be good for you, it’s less “cutesy”for lack of better words. Unfortunately true fantasies that are on par with frieren or rezero are pretty rare. Could watch the rezero ova movies if you havnt

As a big fantasy fan this is my recommendations.

Mushoku tensei(if you can get past the mcs questionables acts then, I think you'll enjoy this a lot especially second cour of s1)

The new sao movie the progressive one(since the the series is kinda bad but the premise of sao is what really got me into fantasy)

Tensei shitara slime(an absolute must watch for fantasy fans)

Claymore(if you want to get into dark fantasy it's very awesome)

Cyberpunk edgerunner(not really a fantasy but the world is one the coolest ever)

Howl's moving castle, mononoke hime and spiritid away(frieren has the same feel as ghibli film but it's a series, so if you really want more frieren this is it)

Made in abyss(a dark fantastical feel to it, the atmosphere the series have is mesmerizing)

Mairimashita Iruma kun(since you like slice of life as well, combination of fantasy and sol, it's very fun)

Kikis delivery service(is the most special ghibli imo so it deserves it's own mention, it's the most whimsical out of the bunch)

I would want to say One Piece but eeghhhhhh

Also rezero best isekai 100%

You could try;
Love is war, a slice of life, romance, comedy.

Kino's journey, a slice of life mixture of phylisofical stories.

Handyman Satai, has a mixture of stories where the main character just tries to help the best he can.

Spice and wolf, is for older audiences but it is a good slice of life, romance, and focuses on being a merchant in the medieval ages.

Plastic memories focuses on the value of life as well.

Welcome to demon school Iruma, is a very light hearted, comedy, slice of life.

By the grace of gods, is light hearted, adventure mixed with owning a business.

Grimgar, is a high stakes adventuring show.

You could also try Maquia, If it's for my daughter I even defeat the demon lord, acendance of a bookworm, bofuri, anohana, your lie in April, Reincarnated as a sword, or the great cleric.

Hopefully that helps.

Thank you everyone! So many amazing suggestions, I can't believe it, I honestly expected the thread to die out, but you all came through with amazing suggestions.

Thank you, I love the community here <3

Based on this thread, I've short listed these ones (since they showed up the most often:

  • Jobless Reincarnation (this will be the one I check out first since Mushoku Tensei has the most recommendations in this thread lol)
  • That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime
  • Record of Lodoss War
  • Kino's Journey
  • Wandering Witch (this one seems to have a lot of immediate similarities with Frieren)
  • Mushishi
  • Violet Evergarden (this is the second most mentioned one, so I'll definitely watch it soon)

Other than this, I actually started To Your Eternity some time back, but had to drop it because other stuff came up and then I totally forgot all about it, so that's a great one to go back to!

So I think that's some great stuff to start out with, thank you so much!

@N1nj4L1nk her name is Akane, she is from Oshi No Ko. Amazing show (and amazing character)!

Mushoku Tensi (Jobless Reincarnation) is the closest fantasy seinin I've seen to Frieren. Has depth in the characters and dialogue, not just mindless isekai shit like most.

I'm sure there are others but this definitely matches closely in tone, pacing, setting etc...
Can be a little weird at times but if you can overlook some standard anime weirdness it's very good.

Made in Abyss is similarly character driven, and similarly to Frieren, is about the main characters going on an adventure to reunite with loved ones. Only watch if you want to cry, it’s a very sad show a lot of the time.
