No.

There is a few references to actual sciences theories or individuals , but it's very simplified , so you can follow just fine.
However , there are some more complex mechanics that you won't fully understand , especially since the Anime skipped a lot of explanations.

Actually , almost all the "pseudo-sciences" used in Steins;Gate are real concepts and theories , often even very famous and credible ones.
There is obviously some romanticized plot devices (such as the micro-wave) , but not that many...

That's why Steins;Gate is regarded as one of the most believable and reality-grounded science-fiction ever.

Most of the scientific stuff are used for the theme. While they do have intricate theoretical background, the anime does not try to explain them, nor does it use them as a reference. the anime mentions them just to validate the concept of the story up to a minimum level of science. You don't need any particular knowledge of theoretical physics to understand and enjoy the story.

And the story itself is not complex. You just have to be a little careful.

No. It’s pretty basic stuff. Most of the dialogue isn't heavy exposition or complex science talk. In fact I think there are a lot more pervy jokes than there are actual scientific expositions in this series.

Just pay attention to the story and what the characters say and do. Because if you don't pay attention, some of the things may go over your head.

Steins;Gate isn't as complicated as some people say it is. Those people probably just didn’t pay enough attention. It’s not the type of anime that you could just shut your brain off and enjoy. But it’s not exactly "thought provoking" like something like Serial Experiments Lain either where things are intentionally left vague so viewers can piece them together themselves.

i am getting a degree in science and i had a tough time understanding it. because this uses science from a liberal art perspective you are better off not knowing anything.

Steins;Gate is a time travel anime but is actually pretty straightforward and easy to understand and this makes the anime good since you won't be scratching your head in trying to understand something, you don't have to worry about the science here since you will understand 99% of it by the time you finish it.

There are other FAR MORE COMPLICATED time travel shows like Dark, this one is pretty difficult to understand and I was scratching my head for a good amount while I was watching it, I never did this with Steins;Gate.

nah. they'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they made this anime purely just for the people that understood complex science.

It is relatively accurate though. As accurate as one can be when talking about a time machine made from a microwave.. but the way they talk about string theory is cool. Even if you know nothing about this, it'll be obvious what they're talking about because you would've heard similar things before like parallel universes and the effects of changing past time lines, butterfly effect and all that.

so no, it's not complex. You'll understand just fine. it's meant to be goofy and whimsical at times, not factual persay

no. Most of the "science" is pretty unscientific, but you can suspend your disbelief and enjoy the show anyway, because what this show does well is stay consistent with the rules and mechanics it establishes for itself

No you don’t need to understand science
It goes into more theoretical science than real stuff and it explains it in a way you can understand.

With someone with a bachelor's/four-year degree in physics because it came free with my actual degree, I would say that my degree has not impacted my enjoyment of the series or the visual novel in the slightest. It has been a while since I watched it, but if anything I say a degree would potentially lessen your enjoyment, depending on how much of a tightwad one is on fictional science.

No, don't worry! A general sci-fi knowledge helps for sure but all the core concepts are explained in the show. It's like the level of attention you'd have to employ in, for example, any shonen that has a more complex power system, you know?
Also, without spoiling anything, i think you'll realize "the science" isn't the main point of the show, there are other stronger main themes intertwined and the sci-fi was just the style/backdrop chosen to convey them.
Hope you enjoy it <3

well, you don't have to understand it to get the main things out of it, but I am pretty sure after some episode you'll atleast try to understand it, and I think it's not that complex at all, but it could be different for you..

The theories in this anime follow the current theories we have around how timelines work today, think of timelines as the branches of a tree for instance, there is no specific singular line but instead many that branch off from each other. Certain actions and circumstances do not change the timeline but instead create a whole new version of earth in a different timeline. Basically if you go back in time and prevent the Holocaust it won't change the world we live in today but create an alternate instance of reality in a whole new universe while our current instance of reality will stay the same. Steins Gate does follow this to an extent the only difference I noticed is that they change their current reality instead of a new reality being born from the changes they've made to the past.

No,

The science aspect is loosely based on some actual theories, but you the rules are very clear. all you need is the context of the show itself.

Knowing some stuff will only make you appreciate the show slightly more, it's nothing critical.
