Hey everyone! I'm working on a research about customers' attitude to ACGN (animation, comics, games, novels) products. If you have a moment, I'd love if you could help me out by answering a few quick questions. Your answers are incredibly valuable to me!

Here's the link for anonymous survey, thank you sooooo much

P.S. Don't worry if you didn't buy any goods before, please try to complete the questionnaire if you are interested! Thanks again!!

I have never bought anything anime related so far but I may consider it in the future if it something looks so good to skip out on. If I get rich, I'll also try to support my favorite creators. Otherwise, I'll say that most people buy figures and merchandise not to support the creators, but to reaffirm to themselves that they like that anime, to validate themselves through that product, to find an identity in it. It is a religious act intended to fill the God Shaped Hole within. This is why I'm cynical towards it. May check out the survey.

I can only talk for myself, but I bought anime merch because I liked a series very much and wanted to support the creators. You write as if everyone/most people who supports anime are holier-than-thou a-holes. It goes without saying, but the anime industry is a business. People who pay and support the creators are the reason the anime industry remains afloat. If most consumers were like MAL users, most of whom would never spend a cent on their hobby, anime companies would have been bankrupt long ago.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

For those who want to learn Japanese through anime

I wanted to complete the survey since I'm a grad student myself and know that you need data, but I didn't feel comfortable sharing my email address. I know you're probably trying to prevent people from submitting multiple surveys, so maybe you could try building future ones in Qualtrics (if your school supports it) and turn on the "Prevent Ballot Box Stuffing" option rather than asking for identifying information.

Anyway, I typically buy an anime-related shirt for $20 USD once a year. 2023 has been a bit of an outlier for me since I recently started playing the card game Weiss Schwarz, so I've probably spent $100 on cards and supplies the last couple months. I usually stick to clothing since most anything else would just get destroyed by my cat, although once I finish school and have my own office I might get some figures. I primarily buy online and am influenced by the design and the franchise from which the character originates. I enjoy buying anime merch to support the creators, but I think my favorite part of owning it is when other anime fans see it and find common ground for starting conversations and relationships.

As far as what I'd like to see more of, I wish it was easier to find merch that looked like what the anime characters are wearing. When I was a kid, for example, I had Pokemon hat that looked exactly like the one Ash Ketchum wore in Season 1. Lately I've been wanting to find a 428 hoodie like the one Yotsuba wears but have had a hard time doing so. Think of it like wearing your favorite athlete's jersey on gameday.

I also appreciate some subtlety from my anime merch. The best anime shirts, much like those from professional wrestling, are the ones that just look like cool designs to the uninformed observer. This one, for instance, just looks like crosshairs and could be from a clothing brand, rock band, etc., but people "in the know" recognize it from WWE. It doesn't need to have a big I LOVE WRESTLING slogan across the front, so I'd prefer it if my anime shirts didn't shout I AM A WEEB at passerby:

Hope you get lots of good data!

I bought and still buy Pokemon merch, but not on such a scale. I used to have a poster of all the Pokémon at the time on my fridge and my pajamas included a pikachu t-shirt.
