Ive just finished dragonball, gonna start DBZ soon, any advice?

I always hear people talk about post-OG Dragon Ball, but I pretty much never hear people even TALK about the original. I don’t hear people say that they hate it. I don’t hear people say that they like it. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if people didn’t know that it existed.
What’s your opinion of the first Dragon Ball series?

It has one of the best tournament arcs in anime. It also had little mystery elements about goku. I like it because it is very grounded.

Better watch the kai version, else it can become very difficult to watch.

It took me like 4 months because it got way too slow and unbearable sometimes.

I hear kai version has same story compressed in lesser episodes without loss of detail.

The original is mostly overlooked nowadays due to the impact of its sequels. However, it is also highly respected in the community and gets a lot less hate and criticism online than its sequels. I'd say the majority of DBZ fans haven't even watched the original and started off with DBZ, which is a damn shame cuz the original is honestly incredible.

And as for DBZ, just start watching it, if you can't get past the first few eps then I'd recommend watching the Kai remastered version since it's shorter.

yehhh goku definitely isn't normal, he seems to be able to take so much damage compared to others, and does superhuman things aha.

I really was suprised in the final tourtment when he grew up so much aha, he is endearing but I love baby goku ;)

It is very fun to watch. The narrative is agile, characters are charming...
But it has a major flaw to me: everything is solved with fights, but most fights are not interesting because Goku is either absurdly stronger than the oponent or absurdly weaker than him.

yeh the only fights I felt goku was even with an opponent was proberly his first match with tien, his 2nd fight with King piccolo and his 1st fight with piccolo Jr.

Mm.. I like the Og Dragonball more than it's "sequels" (the quotation marks because Dragonball and Z are in the same manga/part of the same manga).

I love the adventure aspect more in OG Dragonball + the fights are also better. (which is on the other side a matter of opinion :D)

I could say a bit more, but that's pretty spoilery. ;)

Both OG and Z are great. So much emotions and nostalgia. I would advise you that if you will DBZ then don't skip fillers. Dragon Ball series fillers are so good you would not wanna miss. Hope great journey ahead with this amazing show 🛐

ages better than most DBZ arcs. it's actually has pacing and many new characters. DBZ is usually just a series of Goku punching bags at best, and standing around talking about shallow plot at worst.

I think that it s just the first part of the best anime series of all time. Actually, I prefer DBZ rather than OG DB, but it's still a 10/10.

And I don't feel like that with Piccolo Daimao.
Another good fight was the Jackie Chun one.

first Dragon ball series is great . But Dragon ball Z had totally a different impact. So it foreshadowed the original one. DBZ is the greatest 😁

In some way, it was ahead of its time. The adventure, the pacing, Goku's development throughout the series, and finally a very good ending. It's sad that people mostly talk about Dragon Ball Z. DBZ is more action-packed, while the original Dragon Ball series had it all, action, adventure, and a pretty chill setting.

DBZ drops adventure theme entirely and now focuses on hypermasculine guys fighting and shouting.

If you like dragonball you will love Arale series called Dr. Slump. DBZ and beyond became more about action than comedy so your opinion on them might depend on how you liked later dragonball episodes.

As someone who watched both when they aired, Watch Kai over Z, it’s better and more faithful to the manga.

Dragon Ball is a fun adventure story and a must watch for any "dragon Ball" fan. You can see they try to recapture the feel of it in the start of GT and some of Super

It's better than Z honestly. Z sidelines characters, power creep is a real thing, the dragon balls become less a quest and more a get out of jail free card and IDK I just find that in terms of having a battle centric story there are later battle shonen (or even those coming out at the time like JoJo) that do that better. A classic innoncent wide eyed fantasy adventure though? I think Toriyama nails that completely. Really the RR arcs to the King Piccolo arc was the peak of Dragon Ball for me though Z has plenty of good moments.

Still I mean it's not like I don't still enjoy Z and as a kid yeah I thought Z was better than OG DB. I mean it is really good even the Buu arc as flawed as it is I still do really enjoy. There are a lot of great high points maybe some higher than OG DB. There are just way more flaws too.

I think it's good up until the end of the 1st tournament, when Toei begins adding a lot of filler to every episode. But even with all this filler, it remains faster paced than Dragon Ball Kai.

a lot of people don't go and watch it after DBZ because it's not the screaming power level shounen that people love so much about, me personally I loved the original Dragon ball more than anything that they put out after it.

It's enjoyable. But personally, I think Z is better. The pacing can be a little slow at times. And I also think the fights improve a lot in Z. Even if people complain about how powerful characters like Goku and others become.

nevwr watched dbz, only dbzk and i gotta say, it seems pretty good. im sure its better. for a more "original" experience like with music and stuff ig they culd watch dbz but i enjoyed kai alot. also it has way less episodes due to no fillers.

Is overlooked because americans got DBZ first, and after its success they got OG to have more. OG is the reason why Bulma is so beloved.

Because Dragon Ball Z made it out of Japan first. And became big, way too big for any other Shounen series to compete, including its own prequel.

It also doesn't help when even the bigger companies and producers don't give this part of the story its due credit. Toei Animation remastered only DBZ (Dragon Ball Kai), Bandai Namco develops dozens of video games only out of DBZ, and many countries starting with the United States stupidly split and publish the manga in two parts (DB and DBZ) even if both have always formed one story.

As for my thoughts; it's a masterpiece, I don't have too many words.

BassMax said:

It also has tons of ugly redraws and recolors as well as a noticeably inferior soundtrack, which is one the main reasons DBZ is as legendary as it is nowadays thanks to the late Shunsuke Kikuchi. For these reasons, I'd still recommend DBZ over DB Kai for a first watch unless you don't really like the series in first place and just want to know what happens.

You'd know this unironically happens a hundred times more in DB if you ever paid attention... Goku isn't even around half the time in DBZ and the only major antagonist he defeats in 291 episodes is Frieza.

I personally love dragon Ball. I love the humor and the young versions of all the characters. My advice for watching dbz is to watch DBZ Kai. Trust me, it has better animation and no filler. And the fights don't go on forever unlike dbz
