My first language is English. I took Spanish for freakin 7 years and I still cant speak it. Took a year of Latin in fourth grade, and can still sing a song about the parts of the body. I know a few words of random languages. I would love to be fluent in a language other than my own.

Why do so many people go "a few words x".

That's just silly. You all know a few words Arabic (for example algebra, alchemy), you all know a few words Latin, actually, a lot of Latin, and Greek for that matter, you know Swahili (say safari), you know German, French, et cetera ad infinitum (o look Latin!). There's nothing remarkable in knowing a few words of a language.

It's just... Not worth mentioning. If you speak a language you speak it. If you know ten words, it's not even worth mentioning, it's not in the same area.

This would be less condescending if you didn't speak five languages. I see what you mean, though.

That is an excellent point! But the thread asks what languages we speak, the word speak means "express with speech". I can express myself with speech in Maori, but not enough to hold a real conversation. So although you are right, it does not seem worth a mention, it still constitutes "speak" :)

It would be different if the thread title asked "what languages do you speak fluently or enough to maintain conversation" ^_^

Ah, semantics ^_^

The above person in purple makes the exact point. The thread in question is rather vague so it's plenty reason to say if you know even a few words if so.

Myself I only have English as my Fluent language. I know a few words in Czech, Swedish and French. I would be right in saying that as we are on this forum in particular, most people would know a few Japanese words also.

English as first language, Spanish as second.

I know a bit of Japanese (romaji), Latin, and Italian, but probably not enough to get by in their countries.

I'm currently interested in learning some Hebrew and Arabic as I do Bible study and it's a personal interest as well.

I can speak English quite fluently, or at least I like to think so! (it's my native language)

I took Spanish back in high school but haven't really used it since then, so I guess I'm 'acquainted' with it. Give me a few weeks prep and I bet I can carry on a decent conversation.

I've dabbled in Japanese briefly (what anime nerd hasn't) though I'm nowhere even close to speaking it fluently. I might know a couple hundred words if I'm lucky.

I can also read leet speak for the most part if that counts (definitely don't speak that though). :)
