| I have to mention Shigurui. It is mainly just dude with swords, but my Lord, I have seen some things that cannot be unseen. It may not have the blood cell count of Hellsing Ultimate, but it grounded in realism makes the violence all the more visceral. |

| Hokuto no Ken is probably one of the more violent, but not particularly graphic. Pretty much the entire story is constant violence. A lot of heads explode, but it doesn't leave a lot of residue. |

| Blade of the Immortal, not the best anime but extremely violent. Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan, this one's fun. Parasyte: The Maxim, this series is actually quite good. Magical Witch Punie-Chan, this one gets an honorable mention for the absolute brutality of the bone-breaking limb mangling. All four have an R - 17+ rating for violence alone which I think is an obvious minimum requirement for this list. Also, I'll second Dorohedoro and Elfenlied. Both of those get pretty nasty. |

| Among what I’ve seen it’s probably NGE, cyberpunk edgerunners and Another. Wouldn’t call any of them extremely violent or anything, except Another perhaps. NGE is mostly not very violent, but some scenes towards the end just “feel” extremely violent because of the “every cell in my body wants you super dead” vibe. I’ve yet to find another anime that repeats the unrelenting and primal violence this show provides. Edgerunners has gore all over the place, but it’s too “artsy” and unrealistic to feel especially violent imo. Another is very gory and gruesome throughout, but the show doesn’t really attempt to emotionally connect you with the violence or characters on screen, thus making the violence feel somewhat monotonous/boring. I would argue that even if a show has lots of violence/gore, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will “feel” violent. It’s all about how the violence is presented and if you feel emotionally invested in the characters that execute/receive the violence, but this is subjective. |
