saw the dogs ova series recently, it made me want to check the manga. guess I will now.
good to know, everyone swore 2 weeks ago that it was Gen. oh well, I still prefer this art style. I plan to play every megaten game one day, just need to find a 3ds, or an emulator that can deal with 3ds games better than my current ones.

I hope that the digital devil saga games goes on the next gen consoles one day as well too. And lol bring back jack bros as well too.

as long as you have a decent pc, ps2 smt games are easy to emulate. I have a guide for it somewhere.
jack bros sorta lives on. as a sidescroller. " Shin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue side-scroller for PC released as free download
Play as Jack Frost and Jack O'Lantern."

I am even more interested in reading Go Nagai's Divine Comedy manga after reading Devilman Lady, which explicitly cites Dante and treats his writings as non-fiction. I tried an English translation of the 14th century classic, but I didn't understand it at all.

I will admit that part of the reason why I took Latin classes (back then and right now) is because of Puella Magi Madoka Magica—more specifically due to its soundtrack using Latin names. Story got me curious about Goethe's Faust too at one point.

Are Goethe and Faust both mentioned in Madoka Magica? What does the anime have to say about them?

Not as far as I can recall, but the Wikipedia page seems to mention Goethe's Faust regarding production.

Also see this page. But considering these two links are from Wikipedia, who knows?

Not really, no.
Part of it is that I'm already familiar with quite a lot of stuff due to mandatory education (like Goethe and Osamu Dazai being mandatory reading, and world history in general) so there's no need to check it out, the other half is just me liking very different stuff in my novels and music taste compared to what anime likes to reference.

I think the closest I got to it was reading wikipedia summaries of the stories Banana Fish titles refer to. And I absolutely didn't feel like I was missing out whatsoever by not reading them properly, they were all absolutely not up my alley 🙃

Oh, I do like looking up non-fiction stuff though! Like obsessing over maps to figure out how the fuck they got to Idar-Oberstein via ship in Fena Pirate Princess, or chemical explanations for all the stuff Dr. Stone handwaves, or real life recipes based on cooking anime and so on.

yes, quite a few. Bungo Stray Dogs, Kingdom, JJBA, Arslan Senki, Haikyuu, Drifters, Nobunaga Concert, Initial D, Genesis Evangelion, FMA, One Piece, Kotaro Lives Alone, Samurai Champloo....etc..

There's more I wanted to look up their origins. I managed to find out some and others I was too lazy to look up on.

I read No Longer Human after watching Aoi Bungaku (more like an adaptation than inspiration though), and I've recently got The Setting Sun also by Dazai ready to go next.

I'm planning on reading Kokoro for the same reason.

There's quite a couple that I can share.

Its true for Bungou Stray Dogs, a lot of the characters are actually referencing Japanese literature and I actually have read some of them! Edogawa Ranpo is a master mystery storyteller and I have read quite some of his works.

No Longer Human is a very beautiful novel for me, it is so dark and sad and it comes to me as if the emotions presented are very real.

Shinsengumi has been referenced a lot by Gintama and Samurai X and the samurai and bushido code during that era in Japan. I absolutely adore that part of their history, and the beautiful art of wielding the Katana

Chihayafuru gets its inspiration surrounding the culture behind Karuta, an interesting play of cards and I did check out quite a few real games of Karuta itself after watching the anime. It actually looks so intense it actually motivated me to learn and deepen my knowledge of Japanese language!

Ginga Tetsudou no Yori made me read the original novel and the authors other works. Beserk and Lodoss also made me read some of Guin Saga and Kaze no Ki to Uta, and to research more about the popularity of Wizardry/Hylide/D&D in Japan that also inspired games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

SaGa games as well were also inspired by board games like dnd iirc since the guy who created them was such a huge fan of them and has based his design around them

Makiba no shoujo Katori i have only watched the start of the story. But I started to wonder why did they adapt this story since it isn't some classic, so I read the novel. I guess it might have been exotic in some way to Japanese readers, but it is really typical novel of the time. A story that tells how a young girl grows into a matriarch through hard work and embodies ideal wife type of the time. Learned also it was inspired by a real person. However to my knowledge in the anime we don't see our mc as an adult at the end who finally owns her own lands.

They did the same with Pollyanna, keeping her kid age in second half that adapts second book

WMT series made me interested in the books too.

-Treasures of the Snow (Annette)
-The Black Brothers (Romeo's Blue Skies)
-Rascal and Wolfling
-Dog of Flanders
-Anne of Green Gables, Emily of New Moon
-Sans Famille (Ie naki Ko) and Perrine
-Peter Pan
-Heidi
-Bush Baby
-The Yearling and other short stories by author
-Cuore
-Maria von Trapp memoirs

Biggest disappointment was with Romeo's Blue Skies adaptation, especially the second half. Though it lead me to read works of the authors like Red Zora, Giuseppe and Maria and The children from number 67. Best youth books I read

I hadn't read any of these since my school never let the class read books liek that it always had to be "pure stuff" anything else you'll burn in hell :/ will look at them soon though

Last year I somewhat made some kind of challenges to myself to watch any media (Movies or Anime especially) that Inspired 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.

Safe to say now, it's not been a success. Life just get in the way.
