I chose Uma Musume.

My problem about tournament arcs is that no matter how powerful you depict an opposing team, they will either lose to the main team or the team the main characters will face in the final match up. It’s really hard to convince me how strong a team is when they lose like 5 semi-finals in a row. And the worst is when a story spends a ton of time on a side character’s growth/redemption, only for them to lose again in the tournament.

Uma Musume avoided the problem by using a sport with a dozen of almost equally important contests throughout the year. Character would run against each other in multiple games with different results, and narratives of side characters can be successfully delivered. I hope more sports anime’s take this route instead of the usually predictable tournament arcs.

For now Haikyuu still the best sport anime, but I highly anticipate the Blue Lock anime adaptation which may have the potential to shift the throne of Haikyuu as the best sports anime.

My Fav sports anime is ahiru no sora,
Reasons: 1.Mostly because of the characters, characters in AHS are one of the best I have ever seen in any anime, their motivations, personalities and development are all so well written, especially captain momoharu, he is the mature version sakuragi hanamichi (from slam dunk), but honestly he is way better than hanamichi as character, with better backstory and motivation
Kenji Natsume is another great character with amazing backstory and development
2. The second reason is that the matches are pretty realistic and you can tell that these are high school matches and not teenagers turning super saiyan unlike kuroko no basket
3. Comedy is way better than slam dunk and most sports anime

Run with the Wind- I love it because the slow-pace feels likes a journey that I'm going through. It is also focused on other things and not just the sports aspect, which makes me feel for them (if that makes sense)

i've only seen haikyuu for sports anime, and i think it's pretty good. the relationships and characters are greatly written in my opinion.

i'm planning on watching chihayafuru soon and i think that's gonna be better than haikyuu, but for right now, my favorite is haikyuu

I've read Haikyuu and it was amazing, especially the first half of the story. The characters and the matches are just so good. Megalo Box is also great, particularly the second season. I loved how they used the latin culture in the story. And there's also Slam Dunk, which a lot of people praise, but I still have to read it

Ao Ashi (a manga, but it's getting an anime adaption next year) is highly underrated. My reason for liking it is that it offers a much more realistic take on football (soccer) than most other football series, like Days, Blue lock and Captain Tsubasa.

Slam Dunk since its good and all. And it made a big cultural impact for basketball in Japan, in my country and other countries, so it really is something that is kinda really hard to forget when you are around at those time.
But yeah younger ones probably don't know this manga or anine even existed.

Ping pong the animation. Its simply epic, words can't do it justice. Forget about your pretty sport boys with questionable sexual orientations. This is a real man's anime, so grow a pair and watch it if you haven't.

Personally I don't really consider Ping Pong a sports anime since the sport is not the center of attention, but since it's on the poll my top 3 are easily Ping Pong, Ashita no Joe and Major.

But I love most anime from that list as well, those 3 just stand above the rest.
I probably regret this post by now.

Haikyuu gets my vote because the cast of characters is diverse and likable. They all have unique traits and bring something different when on screen. The music never miss. I always get excited when karasuno plays against an opponent. It also got me interested in volleyball.

Ashita no Joe, Ping Pong, Slam Dunk, Hajime no Ippo or Touch are all very solid choices. I don't consider Initial D as a sport anime, to be frank, because it's amateurs who are competing with their custom cars and observing their own set of rules, not exactly professional rally pilots as you'd see in a car anime as "Goddamn". Hell, "Future GPX Cyber Formula" is big part fantasy and still is more of a sport anime than Initial D.

Anybody who chose Kuroko no Basket over Slam Dunk deserves to be whipped with a thorn whip when not waterboarded. I am pretty sure they hate Basketball and prefer it when the anime has more common points with Boku no Hero Academia than it has with basketball.

Well, poll results are obviously biased af considering like half of the comments are "I voted Haikyuu because it's the only one I've seen" lol.

Personally I picked Major because I just adore from how many different perspectives, life stages, etc. it portrays people's relationship to the sport. It also hovers just perfectly on the edge between excitingly unrealistic but not yet in superpowers territory 🤭

But I really appreciate Haikyuu too for it's fluid animation of the sport scenes and attention to detail in how bodies are supposed to move in volleyball.

Big honorable mention for Ookiku Furikabutte for the beautiful character work, even though the sport side of things was a bit underwhelming~

As for tournament arcs...honestly, no clue. I can't remember even a single specific tournament in any of all of those anime even though I've seen most of them. Tournaments are just backdrops for the personal journey of the characters and some cool individual matches for me x)
