Now that the first season of Komi-san is over, I think it's a good time to talk about social anxiety in anime and which anime do you think did it best.
As for me, WataMote is my favorite anime of all time, so there's your answer. I believe Tomoko is the most relatable character when it comes to social anxiety. The way she talks to herself and reacts to social situation are accurate. (It's a little exaggerated, however.)
While I haven't seen much of the Komi-san anime, I've read the manga up to the 200th chapter or so. It didn't hit me like WataMote did. Sure, Komi-san is cute, but her social anxiety feels more like a gimmick than a real problem that she can fix. Also, she is too desired to be relatable. People who are scared of talking to people don't accidentally become the most popular person in the school. I understand that that's the joke, but what I like about WataMote is that Tomoko doesn't suddenly gain friends at any point, and that she improved her social skills by sheer effort. (However, the real progress only really happens in the manga.)

Kiriyama Rei - Sangatsu no Lion, March Comes in Like a Lion
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

3-gatsu, Genshiken, Welcome to the NHK, Kuragehime, Kimi ni Todoke, Aku no Hana, My Roommate is a Cat are some shows that come to mind that I found to cover the topic in different but relatable ways. Some positive, some negative, some being somewhere in the middle but all doing the topic justice in some way, at least as far as me and my experiences with it are concerned.

Never saw Komi-san and the Watamote anime felt more like a gimmicky comedy/parody. I enjoyed it but didn't really get more out of it than some good laughs.
I probably regret this post by now.

As someone who have experiences with social anxiety, I can confidently say that Rei Kiriyama (3-Gatsu) and Ishida Shouya (A Silent Voice) portrays it the best and the most realistic, from what I've seen so far.

I think that for me, Watamote was the best. I’ve never related to a character as much as I did to Tomoko. Komi-san didn’t feel as realistic.

I think Rozen Maiden did it best. My favorite character is the adult Jun featured in season 3, but I also love the manga's portrayal of child Jun.

Yes, the adult dyes his hair.

Koe no Katachi. Has a major amount of plot dedicated to how he overcomes this

Kuroki Tomoko from Watamote albeit it appeared exaggerated at some parts. Katsuki Yuri from Yuri on Ice was more realistic and relatable for me although that was just plain general anxiety.

On what I can recall now, "A silent voice" did an excellent job in portraying social anxiety.
On the contrary "Komi san" must not be taken as a show which actually deals with social anxiety issues. It's nothing more than a joke around which the plot revolves around...

Komi-san is a bad take on social anxiety as it used the matter as a running gag and a convenient plot device instead of portraying it properly. Being socially anxious has never been cute as it's mentally and emotionally penalizing for the one who suffers from it.

The best portrayals I can think of were from Welcome to the NHK, Watamote, and A Silent Voice.

NHK hits close to home about the hikikomori culture, social rejects, and social anxiety as mirrored from the main character's point of view. Words ain't enough to explain this, as this is one of the shows that are best viewed in order to get a better understanding of it.

Watamote might be an exaggerated take and it was cringe comedy at best, but as much as it's painful to watch, Tomoko's desperation to fit in is something that socially awkward people can relate with, despite her cringe-worthy takes. Believe it or not, socially awkward/anxious people do some stuff in attempts to fit in -- only to find themselves in an uncomfortable situation for doing so. And that's exactly what Watamote portrayed. You may say that I contradicted myself for calling this a proper take than Komi -- but let's not forget that Komi's social anxiety was uncomfortably romanticized at best while Watamote was a brutal, close-to-home take of the subject matter in hand.

A Silent Voice is probably one of the best movies to come out to date, and I would recommend this one to anyone who wants a worthwhile watch. This is a good redemption drama that portrayed bullying and social anxiety in a more relatable and easy-to-understand approach. No extremes and shock values were used to expose the struggles of being a social outcast and being a bullying victim, and it's a very impressive take on social anxiety and it visually portrayed how it works for people who suffer from it. There's no moment in there that you would say "maybe they're overreacting" or "oh, they're too dramatic it's painful to watch" unlike those two that I've mentioned above. I can't recommend this enough for people who want to see one of the best portrayals of social anxiety in anime.

Those with dirty minds will find my Steam pic offensive

Watamote is one of my favorites. Tomoko's behavior felt real, as did everyone's treatment of her.
My waifu is the most wonderful waifu. Mai Valentine.

We're freaking out that we're running out of time, but to do what? Should i stop and think of that? Is there something i could do to slow it down? Live in a day for once, instead of watch it sprinting by

koe no katachi already in my ptw list, read all posts above make me want to watch it soon.

And i wanna mention net-juu no susume for a show that portrayed social anxiety person. I admit the romance part is Unrealistic (to me), But the way morimori behave when she's not online or meeting someone who knows her before she quits her office job, man the awkwardness. I can relate to that, although not 100%.

whichever anime that included autism, and not the person ever getting out from it. thouh, despitpte all of that, anime fails to represent anything, none have represented anything close to reality, all had random ###### added into them, probably the dreams and delusions of the story writer.

it is indeed absurd to see people giving out random anime names ######.

(no offense was suggested in any possible way, do be wary)
