| I believe it's a long time notion in a lot Asian culture that when someone is aroused his/her nose will bleed. So far I know Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, and Japanese all shared the same notion. |

| Though I don't think this has any cultural backing, the logic behind it was kind of priceless. I had one person theorize that the reason dudes in anime get nosebleeds is because, since they aren't anatomically correct in most cases, the bloodflow has to be redirected and ends up shooting out of their noses ;Þ lol |

| Reviving this thread! I once played an eroge where the main character got nosebleeds from getting aroused. The sex scenes where really funny, as he constantly had to fight the nosebleed as to not die from blood loss. And several times he actually almost died! It's something that I had long wondered about, how did Japanese ppl who believed this have sex if they though they would get a nosebleed from just getting excited a little? Did they like the main character in that game always have their noses filled with paper? |

| I figure the logic is that when they get aroused their heart starts pumping more blood for the sake of a certain region of the body and the sudden change in blood pressure breaks the weakest veins in the body which happen to be in the nose. Due to the lack of certain regions on girls they don't have nosebleeds, if you see a girl nosebleed you can rest assured that it's a trap. |

I agree, it's exactly why everything that isn't realistic appeals to that many people. When i see those nosebleeds, i don't try to figure out why, i just laugh my ass off... :p |

| Nosebleeds had an origin that other people have mentioned here, but they remain in use because of the usefulness for expression -- what would be considered more "acceptable" on TV -- nosebleeds with an implication of what caused it (often with no view), or a close-up of the male character's crotch and the ensuing event? Nosebleeds, like the veins, sweat drop, etc. are just simple emotion symbols that convey a reaction clearly with as little effort as possible, though in a non-literal fashion. |

Sexual arousal can cause a change in blood pressure(excitement = heart beats faster = blood pressure increases), and increases in blood pressure or local blood flow can result in nosebleeds. |
| nose bleeds for anime characters that are males is the equivalent to a ejaculation. It is pretty much just proper and more comical with a nose bleed. |
